💙 keep falling back into Seto Kaiba hell since 2005 💙
writer sideblog: @stray-adventures
Nyra is one of the main characters of my fanfiction, The Dragonrider. (The other mc is none other than Seto Kaiba, of course, and they are both POV characters.)
At first glance, Nyra looks like an ordinary human overall. However, she is not.
(I don't want to make everyone who is not interested in OCs have to scroll through it, so let's continue below the cut.)
Nyra came to the human world during the events of DM (but 3 years prior to the events of my fanfiction) to find a mortal who is suitable for riding a dragon in the upcoming war in her own world. It is a parallel dimension, which looks exactly the same as ours, aside from the fact that there are no mortal human beings over there. That place is ruled by five dragon races, and Nyra herself is one of the white dragons.
As a shapeshifter, Nyra can take a human form, but in her true form she is similar to Kaiba's beloved Blue-Eyes. As a human, she has wavy, white hair and light blue eyes. That's how she catches Seto's attention: he thinks she is Kisara reborn, but quickly realizes she doesn't resemble her that much.
Nyra looks like a 20-year-old female (Seto is also 20 at that time), but in truth, she is 128 (which is considered a young adult too among her kind).
At the start of my story, we are 2 years after the events of DSOD, when Nyra first approaches Seto. He doesn't believe her at first and quickly dismisses her. However, he eventually lets Nyra show him her own world and her true form.
Seto is mesmerized that she, in fact, is a real dragon, and without thinking, he climbs on her back. Nyra takes a flight with him, and in that moment, a strong bond starts to form between them, which is going to change both of their lives forever. And that's how their true story begins.
Some facts about Nyra:
The place where her dragon order lives is equivalent to Greenland. Thus she loves the cold, and it doesn't bother her the slightest.
As a dragon, she's got some powers, but she uses them in the mortal world very limitedly. She is also not allowed to harm humans (except in self-defense situations) or transform into a dragon in their world.
She learns new languages quickly and likes to read.
She has an open, curious nature in general, but also can be proud and stubborn, just like Seto himself. Her curiosity gets her into trouble many times.
She is really, really bad with technology.
She has an older brother, Faolan, who is also a shapeshifter, and a younger sister, Mytha, who is not.

Yugi Mutou:
It's the warmth that reminds me I'm not alone, no matter how dark and terrifying the world can be. The feeling of my friends standing by my side, believing in me even when I doubt myself.
Katsuya Jounouchi:
Man, that's too abstract for me! I have no idea. Well, maybe… Yeah, got it! My answer is: "all the things and all those people you fight for".
…Or if you meant it literally, then it's gotta be the sun.
Seto Kaiba:
Hmph, what a stupid question. But if you really want an answer, then it must be the moment you thrive, when you rise above everything that tried to break you. The undeniable proof that you were always meant to win.
Mokuba Kaiba:
For me, it has to be my brother. No matter what happens, as long as we stand by each other's side, I know things will be okay.
Anzu Mazaki:
Oh, that's an easy question! The answer is "my friends" without doubt. Those peaceful moments we spend together. The sound of their laughter. The bond itself between us.
Ryou Bakura:
I am not sure. All my life, I've experienced it so few times that it's hard to tell if it has any meaning for me. But I want to believe it's not actually beyond my reach.
Mai Kujaku:
Something distant… something I used to chase, thinking it would make me whole. Turns out, it was never about reaching it, but about finding the right people to share the journey with.
Marik Ishtar:
I know the answer already. The rays of the sun — something that was stolen from me, and that I could only reach through unspeakable crimes. Even if I don't deserve its warmth, I'm still seeking the peace it can offer.
Yami Yugi/Atem:
It is what guides us through the shadows, giving us hope and a clear goal to fight for. It is where our story eventually ends.
The Dragonrider [Seto Kaiba x OC fanfiction] - Chapter 19: The Second Chance
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Summary: Since her plan has failed, Nyra tries to persuade the now-awake Seto to accept her gift. Later, Seto is in a meeting with an old acquaintance who offers him something he can't refuse.
“A gift,” Seto echoed at last. “I can't begin to imagine what kind of gift requires you to sneak into my room at the crack of dawn and startle me awake.”
“I didn't mean to wake you,” Nyra confessed, trying once more to pull her hand away. “I was hoping you would sleep through the whole thing.”
“Even better.”
I know I'm two days late, but I still wanted to express my feelings about Takahashi-sensei and how much his work means to me.
As many of us, my first encounter with Yu-Gi-Oh! happened 20 years ago, back in my childhood. I saw the first 4kids version on TV (and sadly in my country we only ever got the first season dubbed). Initially, I thought solving every problem through a card game was lame, but my mind quickly changed when I grew very attached to the characters and the story itself.
Seto Kaiba has been the most interesting character to me from the start. He drew my attention every single minute of his screentime, and I couldn't help but start to feel related to him. I also lost a parent at a very young age, got a baby sister to take care of, and was also bullied at school. But Seto showed me how someone who had to go through so much can stay strong.
He's never been just a cool, rich boy to me with a pretty face, who can get whatever he wants (except one thing lol), but he is one of the most complex characters I've ever encountered in my life. He is also the reason why I instinctively get attached to anti heroes and morally gray characters, who have many layers underneath their arrogant attitude.
In these many years Yu-Gi-Oh! wasn't in my focus all the time, but always found my way back to it from time to time. I was 18 when I got to watch DM with jp sub, and it was such an incredible experience! Then I had my 5D's era, GX era (twice actually) and ARC-V era, and now, at age 31, I went back to DM and to Seto.
Rest in peace, Sensei, you and the world you brought to life will never be forgotten.
Finally, here is my favorite art of Seto by Takahashi-sensei himself.
I want to share the newest commission (credits to the amazing @ Naomi Sunny) for my fanfic, The Dragonrider.
This is an actual scene from a future chapter that takes place during the summer festival of the white dragons. It is based on the Scandinavian 'Midsommar', where people make bonfires and wear flower crowns as they celebrate the beginning of summer. As it's very close to the summer solstice, if you are far north enough, you can witness the midnight sun, when the sun doesn't set all night (it's actually very early in the morning, when Seto and Nyra lie down in the grass).
When I wrote this part, I was convinced that wearing all-white was mandatory, but apparently it's not. Still, my white dragons (and Seto) are wearing white attire to indicate the color of their scales, and since white is also the color of purity, they wear it as a symbol that they are free from winter's darkness and evil spirits.
There is a small scene I wrote for this moment, you can check it out HERE

The Dragonrider [Seto Kaiba x OC fanfiction] - Chapter 18: Nyra's Gift
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Summary: During a quiet day at the Kaiba Manor, Nyra finds the perfect solution for her plan to bestow a sacred dragon ritual upon the stubborn CEO, thanks to the least unlikely person: a chatty housekeeper. Meanwhile, she also receives an unexpected gift from Seto.
And even if he never did, even if Seto came to hate her, it would not be enough to deter her. She wanted to help him. To give him something special that might also bring Mokuba some peace for a while. Therefore, it seemed only logical to do it in his sleep, hoping Seto wouldn't even wake up to it.
But would she really be able to do it?
Would it cause Seto pain?
What if she failed?
A sneak peek snippet from The Dragonrider - Chapter 27 🩵🤍
As a little celebration of June 7th, when the events of The Dragonrider begin, I decided to share a sneak peek from the part I'm currently writing in Hungarian. It's Chapter 27 (currently titled 'Too Close'), so 10 chapters ahead of the most recently posted one.
I tried to pick a scene that shows some progress in Seto's and Nyra's relationship without giving away too many spoilers. For context, our dragoness broke into KaibaCorp solely because she wanted to talk to the CEO. It took her an entire chapter, but finally, she made it to the office of Seto Kaiba.
content warning: implied child abuse (only one brief mention at the beginning), minor spoilers regarding The Dragonrider
Read the snippet below the cut!
Seto downed his water in a single gulp, while Nyra barely made it halfway through her glass. She was far too occupied with studying the CEO.
As he was still wearing the fitted, sleeveless black shirt, standing semi-turned away from her, she noticed something she had never seen before. On his right upper arm, just above his elbow, an unusual, almost perfectly circular scar marred his fair skin, resembling a burn mark.
How did he get it? During another dangerous test, perhaps? Or maybe in a duel?
“Are you finally going to tell me what was so important that it couldn’t wait until the evening?” Seto’s baritone pulled her from her reverie for the second time in the span of a few minutes. He set the empty glass down on a coaster and leaned against his desk with his arms crossed.
Nyra lowered her gaze to the water in her hand. After everything she had gone through to make it here, the office of the KaibaCorp president, to stand face to face with him, this whole thing didn’t seem like such a good idea anymore.
“I came because of our phone call from this morning,” she began slowly. “So much has happened over the past few days. And I... I think it’s important for my mission that we clear a few things up.”
“I see you’ve dug your heels in,” Seto huffed. His gaze was almost challenging as he sized her up. “Very well. Let’s talk. Mokuba told me he had to stop you from leaving the estate yesterday. If I remember correctly, that was the third condition of our agreement. That you stay at my house. Yet you were prepared to break it.”
Nyra felt heat rush to her face and lowered her head even further.
“I just... I was really angry with you. Your stupid conditions didn't even cross my mind.”
Seto raised an eyebrow at that, and lowered his arms before taking a step toward her.
“I hope you realize you're not any better than me.”
“What is that supposed to mean?” the dragon girl asked, lifting her head with a sense of unease.
“You are stubborn and defiant. You don’t give a damn about anything that might stand in the way of your goals.”
“That’s not true!” Nyra protested, already feeling her cool beginning to slip. She couldn't let Seto provoke her on purpose this time.
“Is that so? I think the security system on the twenty-second floor would disagree.”
The girl could only gape at him.
“See? You can’t even deny it,” Seto continued mercilessly. “That’s exactly why you took me to your world, even though as a mortal, I can’t set foot there without an alliance. You wanted to prove to your Order, to me, but most of all to yourself, what a capable emissary you are. Am I wrong?”
Nyra sensed she was already losing, so she opened her mouth to defend herself. He didn’t give her the chance.
“You've done everything in your power to make me your rider, yet you were willing to abandon your mission simply because you were angry with me. Then you decided you wanted to talk to me, presumably because you couldn't get past those feelings — such as attraction — that are apparently incomprehensible to a dragon. And no matter how many times I push you away or brush you off, no matter how many obstacles my company throws in your path, here you are, standing before me in my office. Tell me, Nyra, after all that, what exactly am I supposed to think of you?”
“I told you, I got confused,” she muttered miserably, setting down her glass as well. “Every day I have spent with you has changed something in me. I... I didn't know what to do. I didn't want to give up on the mission. Damn it, you made everything so confusing!”
“Me?” Seto's eyes widened in disbelief as he pointed a finger at his own chest. “It would take a miracle for anyone to figure you out, but somehow I’m the one who confused you?” Then, without warning, he smiled. “Though your persistence is admirable, dragon, I'll give you that.”
Nyra fell silent. She felt like a hunted prey that had willingly run straight into a predator's claws, only to realize far too late what a fatal mistake she had made.
“Why didn't you send me away yesterday?” she asked in a low voice.
“What?”
“I may be just a foolish dragon, but I understood perfectly well that my presence bothers you. So why didn't you send me away? You don't want me to leave, but you don't want me near you either?”
Seto's features tensed, and he took another step towards her. When only a single pace separated them, he reached out and gently tilted her chin upward with his fingertips so he could look into her eyes. To Nyra’s greatest astonishment, there was not a trace of the biting mockery she was used to seeing in those azure eyes. His gaze was deep and intense, his pupils dilated, his lips parted slightly as his eyes drifted down to her mouth. He didn’t need to say a single word for Nyra to understand the answer.
In hindsight, everything he had hurled at her the previous afternoon had led back to this, and the realization took her breath away.
“Because you're attracted to me too... aren't you?”
🎥 Pick a fic and I'll tell you the song I imagine playing during its movie trailer. Fic: The Dragonrider
Aaw thanks for the asks, I hope you have a wonderful day! 🩵
💖 Which of your fics is your pride and joy?
The Dragonrider and One Minute.
I mean, obviously the fic I'm the most invested in currently is my pride and joy, but I really feel like I'm on the right track with The Dragonrider. It never happened to me before that I had roughly the entire plot of a longfic before I even started writing it, and look at me, it's been 1.5 years since I'm working on it, and I'm still as enthusiastic as I was on day one.
The One Minute fic is the oneshot I wrote for Seto's birthday back in October, and I'm still proud of how detailed and emotional it came out. I know it's not crazy popular, but I'm surprised that it's still getting hits even after so many months, and people I talk to on Discord recognize it.
🎥 Pick a fic and I'll tell you the song I imagine playing during its movie trailer. (For The Dragonrider)
It would be Closer by J2! The vibe, the lyrics, the melodies, the rhythm, everything fits Seto's and Nyra's relationship perfectly. I could really see it as a trailer song, especially since the epicness suggests there are darker, more serious themes beyond a light-hearted fantasy-romance story.
