Do you have any recommendations on how and when to cleanse a tarot deck?
I love this question.
There are a couple of ways I know that my deck needs to be cleansed, but it might be one of those things that depend on the deck and the relationship you have with your deck.
Here are some ways I know my deck needs to be cleansed:
When you ask a question, the deck gives unrelated answers or answers that you just feel like cannot be interpreted based on what you asked.
You really just don't feel much energy coming from your deck. When you pick it up, something just feels a little "off".
You don't feel connected to your deck anymore. When you make attempts to use intuition when drawing cards, you just get confused and don't feel the intuition is really there anymore.
I always cleanse my deck after doing these things:
A reading for another person, even if they weren't in the room with me, I always cleanse after doing a reading for somebody else.
If anybody other than me touches the deck, sometimes I'll even cleanse if somebody looks at my deck if I feel that person has a negative attitude.
Laying my deck on an uncleansed surface. This is just a me thing though, I believe that things pick up energies from touching or being near other things that are of different vibrations, so if I do a reading or put my deck on an uncleansed surface I'll cleanse it after.
After doing very long readings for myself or another person. Usually if I'm just asking a couple of questions I won't cleanse the deck every single time, but if I do a lengthy reading I will.
Some will cleanse their deck after every reading they do no matter how long or short it was because decks can hold energy/vibes from whatever is being asked and that tone can show up in the next reading, but that's more of a preference, I usually just cleanse maybe every other reading or every couple of readings.
How I cleanse my deck:
The short way: With sound. Literally just knock on your deck a few times, play a sound bowl around or on top of it, play some binaural beats around it, some positive songs... whatever suits you and what energy you want to feed into your deck as cleansing. Sound can vibrate and alter whatever it touches (have you seen those videos of bass blowing out people's car windows? It's kind of like that), and it's very quick and just convenient.
The medium way: Herbs, salt, crystals... Salt is known for cleansing, so laying the deck in a ring or even a bed of salt does the trick. You can do the same thing with herbs, or you can burn the herbs and run your deck through the smoke (like how you can with incense too), or let the smoke fall over your deck, just make sure you use herbs in respect to your culture and closed practices (ie. don't use the most popular herb that's been known as a closed practice: white sage, unless you are indigenous). I don't use this method often but when I do I usually use Anise, Angelica, Bay, Burdock, Carnation... those types of things because they're both protective, healing, and cleansing. Crystals, just place a crystal on top of the deck (I keep a crystal in the box with the deck), make a ring of crystals around the deck, however you want. I like to use all kinds of Quartz for this, selenite, obsidian might be a good one too, it's more for grounding and protection, but the deck I use obsidian with just fits that vibe.
The long way: Moon, Sun, Meditation, a big cleansing ritual. Usually about once or twice a year I'll lay all of my witchy items out and cleanse all of them with basically all methods I mentioned. You can also use the Sun or Moon just by laying your deck out underneath either of them, you don't have to wait for a specific moon phase if you don't want to either, any phase works. Eclipse energy is amazing too. You can do those meditations where you visualize a light surrounding your deck as you hold it, and just meditate on the light cleansing your deck. I personally don't prefer that method because I can't hold concentration for very long, but it seems to be effective for a lot of people.
The convenient way: This part is for ages 18+. One of the most convenient ways I've found to cleanse your deck is basically solo s3x magic. What you do is mast3rbate with your deck beside you or somewhere like on your stomach... and that's it. Climax is basically a surge of energy being released, so it's extremely cleansing and it helps with forming a close connection to your deck.

Political Witchcraft Primer
Y’all, let’s face it. There are a lot of terrible things happening in a lot of terrible places. Sometimes it feels like everything is shitty and there’s nothing we can do about it. But then a few of us remember that we’re witches and feel called to act magically.
Political Witchcraft, for the purposes of this post, is about that call. It’s about magic for a cause. Which causes are up to the individual witch, who may take on as many or as few as they desire or can handle.
Typically political witchcraft manifests itself in the form of curses and hexes on the opposing side, and while that is definitely a practice that has its place, I wanted to make this post to broaden the scope a little. Because while I’m the last person to curse shame anyone, I also think that it’s not always the most effective route for change, and can in fact, make things worse than they were before you got there.
So what else is there to consider? Here are a few ideas to get you started.
Move With The Movement
SUPPORT THEIR EFFORTS: The first place I would look is to the already established movement behind whatever cause or goal you’re supporting. Take the time to do a little research into whatever issue you’re going to be casting into. Primarily what you’re looking to find are their needs and objectives.
For example: let’s say you want to abolish the death penalty. You could do a ritual or spell with that purpose in mind, and that would be great! But you might find more rewards and results in taking more focused action. A quick google search shows that there are several organizations that dedicate time to ending the death penalty, and one thing they all do is work on a case by case basis.
Some organizations fight for a stay of execution, while others, like the Innocence Project work to exonerate those wrongly convicted, reform the system so that fewer innocent people are wrongly convicted to start with, and they also provide support to those who have been exonerated, all of which might be of interest to your cause.
Remember, oftentimes it’s not just about the end game issue. You might be fighting for a single issue, but in order to achieve that, the people doing the work may need office supplies, the children of the community may need food, the families may need shelter…It’s not just a single issue, it’s a web, and the more spots on the web you find to strengthen with magic, the stronger it will be.
And of course, most movements need volunteers and boots on the ground, which leads to…
SUPPORT YOUR ACTIVISM: Another option is to use magic to support your own work within the cause. If you’re calling your legislators, for instance, you might want to add a bit of magical oomph to your words so that they’ll be heard and followed.
(The same goes if you’re writing letters, although please don’t do something like, obviously dust your paper with a magical powder! We are living in a post-anthrax world, and sending powders to the government is going to likely be seen as an attack. You’re trying to fight for change, not get yourself arrested!)
Volunteering in the movement will give you the ability to have a hands-on approach through “mundane” efforts, but also give you a greater understanding of what actually needs to be done to achieve your goals, and will better prepare you to use magic for them.
Cursing: Be Smart!
I have nothing against throwing down some curses when needed, but I’ve found this tends to be the default action in political witchcraft, even when it’s not the wisest or most effective choice.
For example, let’s say you put a certain police force in a hot and sour jar and shake it up every time there’s a protest or riot, because fuck the police. That might make you feel better, but is it helping? I think that agitating an already tense or violent situation can cause even more issues.
I would look to something like a binding in that case, not because curses are bad and you should feel bad, but because riling up the people with the guns who are hostile toward the crowd they’re facing doesn’t seem like the recipe for a happy ending.
Which isn’t to say that such magic doesn’t have its place, but in political witchcraft you need to make sure your efforts are lining up with your goals. That’s the point.
When In Doubt…
If you don’t have a lot of time to devote to figuring out where to start, but you still want to help, here are three pretty universal areas each causes needs help with:
MONEY: I can’t think of a single cause I support that doesn’t need more money. Doing magical work to help support an organization’s finances is almost always going to be a helpful thing. You can do prosperity work for them, or even enchant your own donation to draw more in kind for them.
SUPPORT: Activism, quite frankly, is tiring, and sometimes even dangerous. Magical work to help fight against burnout, bringing in more people to share the work and burdens, and generally boosting the efforts of the people who are fighting the good fight is basically an area where you can’t go wrong. And if the volunteers and workers are in danger, protection magic might be called for.
ATTENTION: This is a big one, and a lot of us here on tumblr see how hard it is to get attention from the public or the mainstream media for the issues that matter to us. Well, doing magic to bring the issue to the forefront, to bring attention to the people who are working for your cause and their efforts, and getting people involved and engaged is usually a good place to focus your work.
Positive stories for the organizations and activists (or even negative press for their opponents), getting their proposals seen by influential figures, spreading the word that they even exist…these are all things a lot of issues and the people who fight for them need.
The more you get involved, the more ways you’re likely to find to help, but hopefully this is going to be helpful for people trying to get started or trying to achieve more focused results in their work!
And the wind was knocking at my window…

Okay, this is officially my dream house
as the colder months approach: i wish you all a healthy, calm end of the year. i wish you tasty cups of tea, comfortable clothes, warm beds, nutritious meals in safe homes, good music, new friends and unwavering health. you deserve good things now.
The afternoon began with wild collecting for my besom.
After soaking the bristles to make it easier to tie them in a bundle, it was time to assemble them.
Plastic ties made the job relatively easy. I then wound wire in between the gaps beside the ties, tucking the ends of the wire into the bundle. Then I cut the ties carefully away so as not to cut the bristles. Finally, I wet some twine and tied that around the bundle, evenly spaced. I found a branch already cut and whittled at the ends in the woods by the river, it was as if someone had played around and fashioned a sort of spear with it and then just left it there! It made for the perfect handle for my besom. Jammed that handle in the middle of the bundle hard, and that sucker isn’t going anywhere!
I put blue ribbon over the wire to make it look pretty (I think my Goddess likes blue, as it comes up a lot in different things lately) also, dammit, if I am going to own a besom, it is going to look pretty because I deserve it! Cost of my besom? $4.00 for plastic ties and ribbon from the dollar store, that’s it! And of course, the time that it took to gather the bundle from the wild, and search for a handle, all in all it took roughly 2 hours. Not too shabby, if I say so myself.
Now I just have to cleanse the besom (with some sandalwood incense) and ask the God and Goddess to bless it.
I feel it’s relevant for Wiccans and Witches to know you CAN make your own broom at home with just a few things collected from nature. No, you don’t have to be very good at putting craft projects together, and this honestly was very easy to assemble.
It really bothers me when I hear of others involved in the craft who have literally spent a couple hundred bucks easy on a besom/broom they bought online. Unless you WANT to spend that money because it saves time, etc., fine. But otherwise, I feel you are being taken advantage of because no one has told you the steps to make your own.
You will need:
Twigs, straw, whatever for the bristles
Long plastic ties
A small hand saw, or as in my case I used a bread knife to cut the grassy-like straw
Craft wire
Scissors or garden clippers to cut straw/twigs
Branch for the handle
Blade to whittle point in the branch
Twine
Ribbon
If you have ANY questions, please message me. It must be mentioned, this was the first broom I’ve ever put together, so if I can do it, you can too.
~Blessed be.
Not Wiccan, but this seems like a nice project to do this month!
@eztli-i Btw brooms are also of a lot of importance to African American and many AfroLatine cultures! It’s definitely not just a Wicca or even a European traditions thing (:

🌿 Witch Tip 🌿
Create healthy boundaries and frequently check-in with your relationships. Are you giving more than receiving? Are you being heard? Is there meaningful engagement?
While it might sound super woo-woo, surrounding yourself with exhausting or negative people and interactions can and will affect your spiritual, emotional and physical space. It might not be intentional, but constant negativity opens the door for your spiritual walls to be bent and broken down.
Even if you believe ghosts aren’t real, nightmares, internal fears and insecurities are, and they can manifest as stressors in so many aspects of our lives. Next time you’re feeling uncomfortable in your own space, figure out what you can remove or adjust in real time. Reclaim what is most important - you!
.....
I wanted to try something new here on the page! Let me know if you wanna see more down-to-earth witch tips that go beyond spell ingredients and moon phases. While those certainly have their place, it’s important to keep a grounded perspective of what’s going on in our personal and mundane lives too! Stay weird 🍄
