nero dodged and picked up the van with the bringer and beat the shit out of vergil with it, knocking vergil entirely out of commission but also breaking their car. nico is PISSED about this. she left nero alone for TWO MINUTES.

dante’s utilities are disconnected, leaving him unreachable for the foreseeable future. for the purposes of this fic nero doesn’t actually know morrison’s contact information, the few times they’ve interacted with each other was usually through dante personally. he doesn’t know trish or lady’s number.

with their car busted and dante potentially not even at his office, it’s just… not really considered worth taking public transport off the island about it while the situation is what it is. the van is also the staging area of dmc5, so it being broken is kind of indicative of dmc5 being knocked off track.

vergil is extremely, extremely sick. the corruption & injuries produced by having the shit beaten out of him with a car aren’t healing, and his condition is rapidly deteriorating. even if he didn’t wake up tied to a bed (which he did) he probably wouldn’t be able to get up. he takes waking up tied down extremely poorly in general for obvious reasons and considers “that boy” very derisively. the fact that yamato won’t answer his call and come to him disconcerts him immensely, also.

vergil looks shockingly similar to dante, which is (among other things) why nero has bothered keeping him alive. hes pretty straightforward and blunt about it— he knows dante has a mysterious brother & asks vergil if thats what he is. vergil freaks even more at the idea dante may have been contacted, under zero circumstances does he want to be perceived by him like this. & he doesn’t trust dante. [wiggles hand back and forth] i think he flips from being aggressive and trying actively to escape to shutting down completely when that proved futile… he’s like. on his very last legs, flat out dying for real. nero & kyrie pretty quickly register vergils behavior as more wounded animal then anything else (whatever vile thing vergil was spitting when he woke up it’s hard not to notice he’s bracing for someone to hurt him) which eases up their impression of him generally (whether or not he deserves it).

after a few days of vergil shutting down on all of them and also dying (they’re preparing to send nico off to try and grab dante manually because well what the hell) nero gets desperate enough to cram some of his blood down vergils throat… which works. vergil begins stabilizing, at least, and abruptly recategorizes the “childrens” behavior as pity, not malice, which… is fucking awful and humiliating but he does want to live. begins talking again, still pretty hostile but not violent anymore. objectively biding his time. i still don’t think he tells them his name at this point…

vergil doesn’t get much better (it’s agonizingly slow and unclear if theres a limit to what human food and a regular supply of blood is going to do to fix… all that) but he does stop getting worse.

for a while his plan is definitely to recover enough he can reclaim yamato from that boy and then go on to fight dante… still driven forward by the only ambition left. sans dmc5 and vov character development he’s incredibly un-self-aware about his actual motivations, as per usual .

this is the nicest anyone has ever essentially unconditionally been to him in 20 years and possibly longer then that.

even though he’s benefiting from it (especially because he’s benefiting from it) there’s kind of this deep desire in him for nero’s behavior to be “punished”… he doesn’t trust this unasked for unearned kindness not just for himself but as twisted kind of “lesson” that kid needs to learn before it blows up in his face

he also hates the implication of it *not* blowing up in his (neros) face because it says something uncomfortable about vergils own choices over the years he doesn’t want to process

it absolutely is mostly pity (which vergil can’t stand) but nero & kyrie especially go out of their way to like. communicate what they’re doing around vergil and why. he’ll never in a million years explain himself but unfortunately a lot of his damage is just incredibly obvious right now (while he’s weak and vulnerable and scared). i don’t think nico hangs around him much initially… i don’t think she’d be very careful about the assholes feelings though lol.

a natural point i think this scenerio reaches is a scene where vergil finally has the means and opportunity to take yamato back because he’s recovered and the dynamic between them has progressed to the point where nero actually lowered his guard around vergil but vergil just… can’t do it. his last desperate grasping plan is just. currently unattainable, if he can’t meet these children’s kindness with betrayal. he doesn’t have any better ideas. he doesn’t have any other ideas at all. his body is broken & his perpetual motion machine of a motivation is also… showing some cracks, lol. long overdue crashout.

i have a lot of thoughts about this but urizen is like. mundus stripped vergil’s name from him, and names are a Big Deal to demons, they’re the core of their identity / True Selves and cambion he may be vergil was no exception to that. urizen is that big childish expression of “strength” but he also doesn’t have a name— or at least, he didn’t name himself, and he considered himself nameless. what is that… something something, nothing that can ever be stolen from him again (perceived safety) but also nothing to steal, hollow and empty and purposeless. but v names him… imposing the identity of “urizen”. or “vergil” itself, lol. hmmmm.
