I did not finish it and I probably won't this week because I'm busy, but, you know, getting there!

Nancy was not a caretaker. She’d thought, at times, that maybe she’d like to be. That she should have wanted to be. But it didn’t come naturally to her, the way it did for some people. It wasn’t because she didn’t have role models or see the value in it. Her mom had that caretaker instinct, after all. And it certainly wasn’t because she didn’t care. The very fact of just how much she cared might, itself, have been the problem—she cared so very much that she wanted more than could be achieved with a couple of aspirin tablets and a glass of water. She wanted to fix things on a level that left them impervious to further breakage. But big, sweeping solutions weren’t really on the table just then, were they? She could donate old blankets and serve food at the makeshift shelter down at the school, but she couldn’t mend the rifts in the earth any more than she could raise from the dead the victims of a power-hungry lunatic. She couldn’t predict what would happen tomorrow. She couldn’t assure either of them any moment but that of this heartbeat, and maybe the next one. But Jonathan was in front of her, here and now, and his back hurt because he’d raced here to see her. So aspirin it was.

You mentioned all your WIPs during Jonathan Byers week. What's your favorite and least favorite of your WIPs if you don't mind me asking?

huh. interesting ask. been thinking about it for a while and I guess my favorite is the part 2 of the "nancy in NYC" story I posted a while ago. the issue I have with that is it's leading to a climax where she admits that she's not sure who she is without her trauma and I have to include the fact that she, CANONICALLY, is a murderer and I don't know what the fuck to do with that. I just can't make it work. it's so beyond the pale that it's inconceivable. How does she sit with that? Fucking HOW? I guess I'll finish that when I can wrap my mind around it. Which might, honestly be never. Or I guess I can just ignore it, too. Could do that. But Nancy in my story grappling with her grief for Barb while also thinking about how she created countless Barbs because she's a killer, too. Which is so fucking nuts, let's be real.

My least favorite is from like 2018ish and it's a shitty Hogwarts AU that everyone has thought about at some point, that'll never be completed because fuck JK Rowling, that's why. I did enjoy the couple of concepts introduced; pureblood Nancy leaving pureblood Steve for Muggle born Jonathan, which rips her family apart, leaving her all alone. I had a drunk Jonathan apologizing to Mike for breaking his family apart (Jonathan is a teacher and Mike is in his last year. Jancy broke up in their final year.). And then Jonathan is injured and Nancy runs by his side. I'll never finish it because, again, fuck JK Rowling, but having Jonathan Byers say, "the greatest witch of her generation, living above a pub, all because she loved me," scratched an itch at the time, I guess. Still does.

I don’t think the show’s failure to either improve Karen and Ted’s marriage or end it would bother me if the show (a) didn’t make their marriage worse in the final season or (b) gave Karen something besides moments of supernatural badassery and vague assurances of being a Good Mom.

The material cut from S1 wouldn't be so frustrating if (a) it didn't dig right into the heart of several of the meatiest, most significant (and neglected) conflicts in the show and (b) literally any of that had gotten so much as an ounce of attention or development after S1. Because it would have made S1 make more sense and feel more complete and it supported what they were doing with the dynamics they established really well (so well that removing it feels baffling), but it's the proof that they knew what they were working with and simply lost interest that's so annoying. And then they practically surgically excised any trace of it in later seasons.

Another Jancy tether: both are punished by the narrative for losing their virginities (assuming Jonathan is a virgin in season two which is a safe assumption) when they lose them. Nancy loses hers as Barb is being murdered and Jonathan loses his as Will is being taken over by the Mind Flayer and almost killed (again).

also very hot take: Natalia and Charlie’s decade long relationship has had one good benefit for the fandom: people are waaaaay less harsh on his looks than most other fandoms. and that’s almost certainly because the actual actors love each other.

Wanna make clear, I don’t care about real life stuff. But if Charlie and Natalia weren’t in a relationship? Oh THAT portion of the fanbase would be all over him.

If we’re talking about “Obsession” and how forcing someone in a relationship when they don’t love you is wrong, let me introduce you to my friend Nancy Wheeler who’s been pushed into a relationship with a man SHE CANONICALLY DOES NOT LOVE by the show AND parts of the fandom for a decade.

In retrospect it is funny how many people were insistent that Stancy was gonna be endgame when it’s obvious from duffer interviews at the time that they weren’t planning on doing flirty Stancy at all. They had a version of season four where Nancy went to Lenora! They thought about killing Steve in season four and created Eddie instead!

Kinda goes against the “Stancy has been endgame since season two” belief, no? Ah well, no one could have seen it coming.

The love triangle is for STEVE'S benefit because there wasn't supposed to even be a love triangle! Steve was supposed to die and Jonathan and Nancy were supposed to end season one together!

There's literally an interview with Natalia and the kids after season one in which Millie says Charlie freaked out when he saw Nancy going back to Steve at the end of season one when they finally got the scripts for episode 8! And Natalia has to try and smooth over the revelation with "we were all pretty shocked and wanted to see where it was going." Or something to that effect.

This is pretty easy to understand! Steve becoming a main character meant that the teen stories had to be reworked. Thus: a love triangle, rather than just Jancy.
