Dude! Election thoughts?

I’m still processing that the NDP won a majority here. That is undoubtedly a big deal.

I see a lot of backpatting from my fellow Albertans on their progressiveness and how that brought forth this change but I don’t know about that. I’m still reconciling whether a large chunk of NDP voters did so whether they believed in the platform or if those votes were a strategic/protest vote done so out of “not the PCs and not the WRP because who are they at this point and not the Liberals come on lol so who’s left”. Not like the two are exclusive. I was actually hanging out with someone on Friday night and we started arguing about whether Canada is as progressive as it thinks it is (I know we’re not a monolith) and I was arguing that we aren’t, considering the GSA battle in Alberta, the sex ed protests in Ontario, Bill C-51, etc. Of course, I didn’t say all that because I naturally got all tongue-tied and the conversation went south, etc etc. Anyway, point is that the NDP winning last night would have complicated this discussion a bit.

I wrote this on my FB but the NDP is going to go through so much scrutiny for the next few years. Scrutiny from the PC/WRP who are looking for the smallest and most petty reasons to convince us to vote them out, and the voters themselves, who are looking to the party they voted for to be a model left-leaning party that’s operating in Alberta. Anyone voted in under a democracy should be held accountable but a left-leaning party holding the majority is new to a lot of us and so there is wariness. I understand that.

I just hope that if the NDP gets complacent and fucks up, we don’t have to wait another 44 years to vote in another party.

I wrote about a paragraph and a half on "relatability" and Fresh Off The Boat (long story short: relatability is a lousy metric by which to judge art but it turns out I've never had anything to relate to until now) but then, I realized that as an Asian who has not seen a family like his on TV, ever (I missed out on Margaret Cho's show because we didn't have cable then), that I could watch this show without thinkpiecing it, without picking it apart for authenticity (the parents' clearly-fake broken English is distracting and not distracting because of its brokenness but because anyone with actual immigrant parents could tell that it's fake, anyway, I wish they would just throw the middle finger to authenticity and just talk without affectation and yes, I know broken/accented English is not an affectation stop being so Tumblr, Tumblr), without worrying that this show might negatively depict Asians at any point, without wondering how compromised Eddie Huang's story is for a white American audience because, if you've read his tweets or any of the press this show has been getting, Eddie has clearly thought enough about it (he's probably thinking about it right now).

At any point during the show's run, I might go back on any of what I just mentioned, and that's understandable because standards are undeniably high (if and when I do go back on what I say, I hope I keep their burden in mind), but for now, I'm enjoying seeing a boy like me on TV. I knew tons of kids like me, mostly POC, who were enrolled in Kumon, like the Chinese Learning Center shown on the show. I also threw out lunches that my mom made me in hopes that I'd fit in. I see my own mother in Constance Wu's penny-pinching Jessica Huang. I'm glad that these culturally-specific experiences are being shown on TV, and I'm also glad that someone else will watch this show with a critical eye, unlike me.

Awhile ago, like ten years ago in internet years, but probably more like a few months ago in real time, Twitter did this ill-advised beta thing where it allowed users to enable an option that, if you turned it on, let anyone DM you, regardless of whether you followed that person or not. Soon enough, maybe because they realized how unpopular it was, they removed the option… but not without reverting everyone who was foolish enough to enable it back to how it was before. So now there's a select few Twitter users who have DMs turned on for everyone with no way to turn the damn thing off.

I remember this because I DM'd someone the other day who was not following me back on there with the help of the aforementioned loophole. And I'm this longwinded here because wouldn't it be funny if Tumblr did the same thing with Festivus Mode...

There was a snow storm last week in Calgary. When everything cleared up, there wasn't a lot of snow left but what landed was wet and heavy. Trees bore the brunt of the damage, some of those trees decades old. Here's a pic I took then that I wanted to post on here that I didn't get around to doing until now.
