I stopped to see the almost completed Bob Uecker mural on Sunday before the ball game.
And I'll be at the opening weekend for this film.
It's not like a loved one died. I won't give it that gravitas. But that beautiful, hilarious, thoughtful human being was on every radio in every workshop, during every long car ride, every canning session in the kitchen, sitting on a deck drinking with the boys, splitting firewood with Dad, falling asleep in bed as a kid... for literally every summer of my life until last year.
The Voice of Summer. I'm excited to see the movie. We'll probably have some beers and brats in the parking lot beforehand. It's what Ueck would've wanted.

I hate this era of "hot take" sports reporting. There's no actual journalism, just dudes yelling stupid shit at each other to get clicks. ESPN has become nothing but yammering heads doing nothing but reaching for the most outlandish bullshit to drive engagement.
Some of you never got to see Dan Patrick and Kieth Olberman behind the desk, with an in-depth five minute field report by Charlie Steiner, and it shows.
I miss the anticipation of my copy of Sports Illustrated arriving weekly in the mailbox. Yes, we used to have hard copies of the internet delivered to our homes on glossy magazine paper. Ask your parents.
SI came on Thursdays, complete with the glorious, grainy photos shot on film, long before DSLRs were ever dreamed of.
We didn't have access to every game in every league back then. We didn't have highlights on YouTube every morning. We'd have to wait a week to sit down and become engrossed in some 5000 word well-written essay on the Big Game or the star of the moment. When sports journalists were journalists.
It forced us to wait. It forced us to sit down and read for an hour. It forced us to imagine what it must've been like to be there. It was better.
OK, gotta go check baseball highlights on the internet.
Remember The Sports Reporters?
I miss Stuart Scott too. He was cooler than the other side of the pillow.
And it was scandalous, not expected, to talk about gambling on literally every aspect of every game. They talked about strategy and history and human interest. Sigh. Sad trombone
Remember? I can hear the opening theme song right now. Mandatory Sunday morning viewing.
When Rich Eisen returned to guest host SportsCenter after 20+ years last year, he paid tribute to his friend Stuart Scott. His voice cracked and tears welled up... "He should be in that chair, next to me, next us. I miss my friend."
Tore me apart. Fuck cancer.
If you're a podcast person, Rich is doing a new one starting in June. This Was SportsCenter, a look back at the early days with all the old faces we remember. I can't wait.
@slickshoesareyoucrazy It's happening. It's so nogalstic and wonderful. I got chills and watery eyes a couple times.
He just ate a dead robin in one gulp. Kind of impressive, actually.
