I want to be allowed to be annoyed by stupid little things, but the stupid little things I get annoyed by are the result of his father whose mind is disintegrating so I have to shut my mouth before I cause more problems.
I want to have room in the fridge for foods I like and will eat, but it's full of the stuff his dad bought several multiples of because he forgot we already had some. But I'm the asshole if I try to make room.
I want to be able to say what I'm thinking, but every time I open my mouth I seem to say the wrong thing and piss people off. So I guess I need to show people what I'm feeling without saying it out loud.
Oops, that's what got us into this mess.
Oops, that pisses off the people around me too.
Oops, I guess I'm the mistake
I'm sorry I'm such a piece of shit
No, I'm not supposed to say that
I'm sorry I say the wrong thing every time I open my mouth
No, that's the same problem
I'm sorry my instinct is to make you feel bad for me
Look, I'm sorry I don't know how to apologize any other way
Sorry for inconveniencing you with my issues. I should have suffered in silence like I'm supposed to.
A Basic Binary by D.C. Emerson
Penelope's done it. They’ve come out to friends and family as nonbinary, survived online dating, and now have an amazing partner to show for it. Their partner is everything they’ve ever wanted—sweet, funny, caring, and willing to dive into new fashion and new pronouns with Penelope. They’re more than ready to explore this new phase of their relationship, there’s just one thing, though. It’s been months and they still haven’t had a sleepover, let alone tackled intimacy between two genderqueer people.
Everything’s fine. There’s nothing to stress about. They’ll figure it out on their own time, and in the meantime, Penelope’s enjoying every day of their new relationship. That is, until Penelope gets a letter from their landlord saying they have three months to find a new place to live. Now, on top of working two jobs and attending couple’s sessions on genderqueer intimacy, Penelope has to figure out if there’s any way they’ll be ready to move in with their partner.
Follow the conclusion to Penelope’s story as they visit a wacky pop-up museum, attend a stressful engagement party, somehow end up in a friend’s delivery room, and, of course, spend time at the Rainbow Bean cafe.
A Basic Binary is an LGBTQ+ contemporary romance that explores love and intimacy in genderqueer relationships. It’s the second book in the Not So Normative series, a direct sequel to An Epic Construct. There’s enough context given to read as a standalone, but it will be much more enjoyable read after An Epic Construct.
If I tell you this is a horror dance number it still won't prepare you. That last move was so terrifying even the judge was like "Let go! Let go!" If you told me they're actually possessed I'd believe you.
The music is a remix of the song Mere Dholna from the Bollywood movie Bhool Bhulaiyya, a remake of the classic Malayalam horror-comedy Manichitrathazhu. It's about a young bride that seemingly becomes possessed of Manjulika, a dancer of the ancient royal court whose tragic death has turned her into a vengeful spirit, one who evokes the wrath of the goddess Durga Kali. In the iconic scene that is repeated across remakes, the groom and his family discover his bride dancing in the dead of night in a manic, disassociative fugue, wearing a moth-eaten dancer's costume and a face smeared in kohl, ash and vermilion. She's hallucinating that she's Manjulika dancing carefree for the court with her lover. The upbeat music is deliberately incongruous with the pathos and creepiness of the scene in reality, especially as it crescendos in the bride's head to the moment when the king decapitates Manjulika's beloved in a fit of jealous rage.
This specific number is by the all-male troupe B Unique, performed for the Indian reality talent contest Hunabaarz. It's a modern fusion based on Bharatnatyam that turns up the creep factor by 200% and is basically a showcase of contortionism and synchronicity. One of the most perfectly choreographed and executed dances I have ever seen. Truly incredible!
The group is still taking their work across the world's talent shows. And yes, that guy is hypermobile enough to turn his head like an owl.
