Dress your home smartly for the seasons
Passive solar design – sometimes just called passive design – is a bit of a buzz term at the moment. Essentially, homes designed using passive solar design principles take advantage of natural climate to maintain thermal comfort. Such homes reduce or eliminate heating and cooling bills as well as cut greenhouse gas emissions from heating, cooling, mechanical ventilation and lighting.
The term "passive" refers to a system that does not require additional energy sources (other than the sun) to operate, in contrast to active systems, such as mechanical airconditioning, geothermal heating and cooling, motorised sun-shades etc., which require input of additional energy to operate.
The key elements for creating a successful passive solar design are:
Climate
Understanding what kind of climate you live in is the most important factor. Homes designed for a hot, dry climate, or a tropical climate, will be very different from those designed for Melbourne, which is typically classed as a mild-temperate climate.
Just as humans wear different clothes for different weather, our homes also need the appropriate attire for each season.
By being sensitive to the climate when designing your new home or renovation, you'll avoid wasting money and energy on trying to keep your home comfortable all year round.
Envelope
The envelope is the outer shell of a building; the walls, windows and roof, as well as the foundations they rest on. Like the clothes we wear, the envelope is our first response to climate. Too often though, our home's envelope is designed purely to "look good", to be "cheap to build" and so on. People who dress themselves this way inevitably pay the price and it's the same with our homes. Understanding what makes a good envelope will form the basis of a comfortable and ultimately healthy home for all who live in it.
Orientation
Many people these days understand the benefits of purchasing or renting a property with a north-facing deck or yard. The sun provides free heating to these spaces for a large part of the year, but unfortunately, a lot of homes have not been designed to "face the sun" in the right way. Some miss out on the benefits of such a cost-saving energy source, while others get too much at the wrong times of the day.
Shading
A good hat is priceless on a hot day at the races, and the same can be said for good shading of your home. By placing shading elements like eaves, pergolas, shade sails and external blinds in the correct locations, you can enjoy the warmth of the winter sun while being sheltered from scorching rays in the summer months.
Thermal mass
Thermal mass works like a big battery to store up heat for use later in the day. When combined with properly designed shading and good insulation, you can have a dream home that's cool in summer, warm in winter and is cheap to keep that way. While it has a delaying effect on heat, it shouldn't be confused with insulation, which prevents heat flow but has a very low thermal mass itself.
Thermal mass is incorporated into the building usually as part of the walls or floor and can be as unobtrusive as you like, or the showcase of your sustainable home. Thermal mass is very important in climates like Victoria's, where we commonly have high day-night temperature variations. Solid brick homes are known as "high mass", while timber-framed homes are "low mass".
Insulation
Keeping heat in, or out, is essential to a comfortable home, and insulation is what every home needs to not only meet Australian Building Code requirements, but to properly manage the flow of heat energy into and out of our homes. As noted already, thermal mass needs good insulation to function and is not only useless without it, but can actually be an additional cost in heating or cooling your home.
Without proper insulation, the heat of the sun will eventually 'charge up' the mass of a solid brick home, releasing it for many hours after the sun has set, making for an uncomfortably stuffy night's sleep. Likewise, during winter, a similar home will be constantly losing heat to the cold brick walls, costing you more and more each year as energy prices rise.
Poorly insulated light-weight homes suffer a much shorter-term cycle of discomfort, becoming hot very quickly during hot days of summer and similarly losing their heat quickly at night and during the colder months
Glazing
Aside from providing light and views during the day, glass has the ability to allow heat in while stopping the cooling effects of cold air movement. It also has a very high conductivity, so heat passes back out through it quickly: a one-metre-by-one-metre single-glazed window loses or gains heat about three times faster than the same area of solid brick wall, and about 12 times faster than a timber-framed wall with the minimum required insulation.
Drapes or double-glazing halve those rates, but it's important to place glazing correctly to avoid unwanted heat gains or losses. North-facing glass is generally to be favoured, while west- and south-facing glass should be kept to a minimum. If you really must have that three-metre-by-four-metre window for the magnificent view, make sure it's double-glazed and preferably well-shaded.

One for the kids
I was recently contacted by a Year 12 student at Xavier College in Gawler, SA (had to google that one!), who asked if i'd help with his research project by answering a few questions.
It was refreshing to have the opportunity to not only review my own inner operating system on sustainable architecture, but also to assist in the development of future thinkers & movers in the world who are (from anecdotal evidence at least) increasingly showing a keen interest in the well-being of their planet and the way we live.
Here are the questions (in italics), and my answers...
What are some environmental benefits of Sustainable Architecture? First, a little definition: Sustainability: the concept is an ancient one, although it's resurgence in the last few decades has made it seem to be a new idea. It's basic definition as "the capacity to endure" needs to be viewed from a wholistic point of view, in what is often referred to as 'the triple bottom line' - economic, social, environmental (physical). If systems / ways of doing/making/being are unsustainable, they will eventually collapse. It should be noted that to be sustainable a system must also be dynamic and capable of learning - what is sustainable now may be unsustainable in years to come, as new realities about the environment are learned. Architecture: The etymology of the word derives from the Greek meaning "superior building" and is again, far from new as you're well aware. So, architecture can be seen as the embodiment of our very best examples of humanity's built response to the world we inhabit, going beyond the simple needs of shelter to encompass the higher aspects of a society. Since our built environment, our economic system and our society all depend on each other, if one or more is not sustainable (ie. incapable of enduring), they will ultimately bring about the other's demise. There are many benefits, but here are the first 7 I can think of:
the recent renaissance of the concept of it (in popular culture) has raised the issue - and therefore the level of discussion & awareness - on what is sustainable in our built environment
the building of sustainable architecture also achieves the above point, but goes beyond it by making actual examples that can then be tested (in contrast to theories, which are 'a dime a dozen' until they can be tested and proven)
it can bring people into close contact with their natural environment, even in the middle of a dense city
it is socially-affirming, allowing easier interaction between people without intervention of dangerous / undesirable influences such as toxic waste, noise, cars, violence etc...
allows us to make the best use of our natural resources, whether for building, energy production, or growing food, by aiming to reduce/re-use/re-cycle waste
increases our sense of well-being, often in more than one way (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual) by enabling structures, spaces and processes that are life-affirming
it goes some way (depending on the project) towards respecting the needs of future generations (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_generation_sustainability) and ideally leaves the site in a better state than it was found, and/or gives more back to the earth & community than the previous use of the site did
What do you consider to be the most important benefits of sustainable architecture and why?
The most important benefit by far is that it will allow our civilisation the chance to evolve toward a harmonic state of existence, provided that our social-cultural and economic systems also become sustainable. How economically viable are sustainable concepts in architecture? i.e. In your opinion, are the costs involved with using sustainable materials and processes warranted.
Economical viability must of course be assessed in the first instance on economic terms, but to remain faithful to sustainability this must always be within a wholistic context. So, yes, the so-called 'costs' are warranted, because becoming sustainable in all respects is an investment in our own survival. The cost-benefit analysis of doing this vs not doing it have been proven/discussed many times over. Do you think 'green living' is the way of the future both here in Australia and overseas?
Absolutely. Without 'green living' or what could generally be termed a sustainable lifestyle, there will be very little 'future' left for us to enjoy.
How do you incorporate sustainable concepts into your designs?
At the very basis of all my designs are some very simple principles:
Consideration of the 3 primary aspects of sustainability: social, economic, environmental
'Passive solar' design principles (I won't go into too much detail - google it and you'll find some good articles. I wrote one for PRW newspaper)

Are sustainable materials readily available?
It's a tricky label: "sustainable materials" - materials are not, in themselves, sustainable or not (except for obvious things like toxic substances) - some materials are of course more durable than others, but it has at least as much to do with the life-cycle (the path of gathering, production and disposal) of a material, and of the use of the material in a particular system. I consider your use of the word 'materials' to include 'commercially products', so to answer your question - Yes, and increasingly so. Markets are learning fast and many companies are seeing the benefits in offering materials & products that can be environmentally considered sustainable, or that help contribute toward sustainable building systems, even if their raw materiality is not considered completely 'sustainable' (such as plastic rainwater tanks, solar photovoltaic panels etc..) Some sustainable materials are difficult/expensive to source because they have been over-exploited by previously unsustainable methods, such as indigenous hardwoods. With time and proper resource management policies (among other factors) many more materials can be considered sustainable.
What projects have you been involved in where sustainable architecture was involved?
Unfortunately, most projects I've been involved in to-date have been through other practices I've worked for, none of whom have been practices that overtly push for sustainable design (although I'm now in negotiations to work with a practice that does - Breathe Architecture). None-the-less, each one has, at the very minimum incorporated passive solar design principles, which help to moderate the environment in and around the building, reducing it's energy use, and increasing value for the occupiers, without making a big thing about it being 'sustainable' - it's just sold as good design, and is actually the easiest way to achieve at least a 6-star energy rating that is now a requirement under Australian building regulations. My own practice - Studio G Architecture - is relatively new, and has only had 1 project to-date (as-yet un-built due to economic situation & local town-planning politics!), which incorporated a number of sustainable features including 168 sq.m of green roofs (approx 40% of the total site area), rainwater tanks, extra thermal insulation above the building code required levels, less cars (4 car spaces instead of 6, as it was within 2 min walking distance of train & trams), use of water sensitive landscape design etc.. The project is located in Goodman St, Brunswick.
8-Star Homes: a "cost-optimal" solution
Further to my recent work on "pushing the rating envelope" I've found recently-completed research which shows that a home with a building envelope rated to an 8-star standard, along with an appropriately-sized solar hot water heater and solar photo-voltaic array for electricity generation will provide the most 'cost-optimal' housing solution for Australian housing. This is consistent with the recommendations of the accompanying report to my 10-star challenge design submission, which noted that while a 10-star rating is achievable, the cost of the specification required to do so would be cost prohibitive for many households.
Achieving 8 star efficiency is primarily a matter of applying passive solar design principles - which I've written about previously - and settling for a more compact dwelling (no mega-'McMansions' here, thankyou). These fundamentals under-pin the Studio G design philosophy, rather than being an 'optional extra'.

Analysis carried out for Lifetime Affordable Housing in Australia (LAH) provides new insights into lifetime costs and energy savings for volume housing design options and identifies sensitivity factors.
Lifetime Affordable Housing in Australia is a study at RMIT providing essential research to inform policy, enabling Australia to provide high performance urban housing within current and future economic and environmental limits.
Dr John Morrissey, from RMIT, said: “We are now entering into the concluding stages of this project, and are in the process of disseminating our research findings, which have significant policy implications.”
The research indicates that the cost-optimal approach amongst the options considered is enhancement of the energy efficiency requirements under the building code to the optimal cost-benefit target of 8 stars equivalent performance.
They also indicate that an 8 stars building envelope performance standard, in conjunction with on-site solar PV and solar hot water, is cost optimal and in line with international policy directions for on-site RE.
Morissey adds: “Design based interventions represent the most cost-effective means of improving residential thermal performance. In this regard, the research indicates passive solar energy efficiency design can provide an important and low cost step towards reducing environmental impacts”.
“More compact designs with passive solar features are more adaptable and can potentially be provided at lower cost than bespoke alternatives;
“House size is a critical factor in performance, and furthermore, better performing designs require less adjustment across different orientations; and
Building standards regulation could be used to further drive energy efficiency standards without undermining affordability.”

This includes selection, briefing and payment.
I have worked on many projects with developers during my time with NMA, and hope to continue developing mutually-beneficial relationships with other developers as Studio G grows.
The potential for development of projects that don't degrade their environment, but instead give back to their surroundings in numerous ways - social, environmental and economic - is an exciting prospect for me, and I'm always keen to hear from investors who really want to maximise the potential of their property.
Designer to the Stars (10/10)
Yes, it's official. On Tuesday evening, I received certified recognition of my skill at designing to the highest standards of energy efficiency, in the Building Designer's Association of Victoria's '10-Star Challenge'.
The competition was initiated by the new president of the BDAV, Tim Adams, at the end of March this year, with the primary aim "to encourage our members to participate and develop their knowledge base to get to the 10-star level". An article in the Melbourne Weekly formed part of the publicity for the initiative.
Our submission was the result of a collaboration between Studio G and Cundall - a well-known industry player in sustainability consultancy and services engineering.
The brief was to design a 3-bedroom home on a 'typical Melbourne suburban block' 15.3m wide x 35m deep, complete with 2-car garage/workshop.
Working with Senior ESD Consultant, Ashley Buchanan and technician Magdalena Myers, the house design was rated by FirstRate 5, one of Victoria's recognised energy rating software tools used to measure new home designs to ensure they meet - at a very minimum - a 6 star rating. The rating was an essential part of the submission, as it was proof of the design's performance. The initial design as conceived by Gerald Lock achieved a 9.1 star rating, so some additional work was required to push the rating to the required 10-star goal.
As part of the entry's research phase findings, costings were run for the energy used in progressively more efficient homes. Using typical current electricity prices for Melbourne, a 6-star home equates to a heating & cooling load of 5,827kWh per year or about $1282 per year (assuming both heating & cooling are electric - gas heating would result a much lower energy bill), while a 9-star home only requires 1,278kWh per year or $281 per year (electric heating & cooling). A 10-star home requires almost zero heating & cooling.
What we found however was that the technical specification for a home rated at 10 stars was unfeasibly high, and we therefore concluded that it would be more practical to construct a 9-star home and cover the 'energy short-fall' with a small renewable energy installation such as Solar Photovoltaic (PV) panels. A 9-star home with a solar hot water service and 1.5kW PV system could potentially generate around 4-5kWh per day surplus to sell back to the grid. Something that will be highly valued in the coming years, as energy prices continue to soar!
All of these assumptions are of course dependent on occupancy patterns. As mentioned in my last post the most important part of the move toward higher energy efficiency is education of the occupants, as the star rating for a home only measures the thermal performance of the building envelope. It doesn't account for appliances, hot water or lighting which can account for around 60% of household energy use.

"Green" Houses failing to deliver
An ABC 7.30 Report article yesterday (26/4/11) raised the thorny & perplexing subject of house energy ratings. Comments made in the interview by home owner Jacqui Suttie about her new 5-star home show that star-ratings are being hyped up by home builders, perhaps to generate additional sales/profits and mis-leading buyers as a result. It also indicates that there is still a fairly poor understanding by consumers and sales agents about what a star-rating means, and indeed what is meant by 'energy efficient' Her house, rated as 5-star, is only just meeting the 'bare minimum' for current legislation. Not exactly what I'd call energy efficient, although it is higher than most homes (built before 2004, when the initial energy rating legislation came into effect) would currently rate. She suggested she'd been led to believe that heating & cooling "wouldn't be an issue" - I'm not sure what she thought that meant, but a 5-star house is still quite inefficient and will still require 'reasonable amounts' of heating & cooling. Only a 10-star home requires no heating or cooling, and some builders have recently been pushing the envelope. Mirvac's 'Harmony 9' is rated 9.2 stars (not for sale, unfortunately), and a recent CSIRO venture with Sustainability Victoria and volume home builders Delfin-Lend Lease and Henley Property produced a 'Zero Emissions Home' that rated about 7 stars, with the added benefit that it also produces zero carbon emissions (not part of the energy star-rating system). I whole-heartedly agree with the opinion of Prof. Terry Williamson (School of Architecture, University of Adelaide), that builders should be held responsible for proving the house's rating as part of the house's legal certification requirements (Certificate of Occupancy etc..). At present they are responsible for building the house to the specifications set out in the energy rating report, which includes - as standard - that all air gaps be sealed at the various penetrations of the house, such as fans, hatches etc. and that air seals be fitted to all external doors & windows. Only when such accountability is held will there be any 'guarantee' of their stated rating. Many times during my career to-date, my colleagues & I have puzzled over the seeming inconsistency / unpredictability of the energy ratings that each house gets.
I'm currently involved in an competition run by the BDAV called the '10-star challenge', which is proving to be very educational on the 'inner workings' of energy rating software. My initial design has been rated at 8.7 stars, but we're now faced with the challenge of modifying the design configuration to get a 10-star result. Watch this space!
While I've always strived in my professional practice - where possible - to produce design solutions that are more energy efficient, using 'tired and true' principles of environmentally sustainable design (ESD) some designs that you'd think would rate highly don't perform as well as expected, while some get a higher-than-expected rating. The real trick - as the other professor (Adj. Prof. Monica Oliphant) pointed out - is actually getting people to use the house properly and live a lifestyle that is energy efficient.
The problem of "the 1-star occupant in a 10-star house" is a matter of education, not legislation.

Renovate without wrecking the planet
The Australian Commonwealth Government have a joined with the construction & design industries to produce a site that I've known about for quite a while now, and have referred to on many occasions, both for projects and client education.
The content and level of detail in the sites is fairly comprehensive (especially the Technical Manual) and is not intended to replace the skills of an architect or the process we undertake with clients, but rather to help educate a client who wants to know more.

I recently wrote an article for Property Review Weekly, covering the basic principles of passive solar design (sometimes just called "passive design"), using the analogy of dressing appropriately for the seasons, rather than just to look good or to save money (images of scantly-clad clubbers in a queue on a winter night, or black leather-clad goths on a summer day come to mind!)
These fundamental principles of good energy-efficient design are at the core of Studio G Architecture's tool-box, helping you achieve a design that not only looks great, but is cost-effective to build and to live in.

Get paid for "going green"
Many people are now aware that both Federal & State Governments are providing financial incentives to Australians for a variety of sustainability initiatives, such as solar electricity, solar hot water, water tanks & more efficient plumbing & lighting.
All very encouraging, but a recent Newspoll survey by Solarhart has indicated that around 50% of those surveyed are unaware of the Federal rebates for solar hot water, and just over 25% were unaware of any legislation or rebates exist to help them transition to a sustainable energy supply.

While researching a lead on "Sustainable House Day 2010" (Sunday 12th September) I came upon Shmeco - a bubbling online community that I've found to be very inspiring - a kind of Facebook for sustainability networking.
The site was formed in 2009 and is free to sign up.
It has a format that allows members to contribute to a growing "knowledge base" of articles, a Q&A forum, add photos of projects, form network groups on any topic of interest, and browse a range of sustainability initiatives & projects that members are encouraged to support through a credit system.
There's also an expanding directory of sustainability-related businesses, complete with photo galleries and links to external websites - great if you're looking to expand your marketing presence to a well-defined niche of "green life-stylers"
While the primary membership base seems to be Australian, the site developers are hoping to attract international dialogue as well.
