Inspiration
Today a 6th grader told me he wanted to be an artist when he grew up, but he never really had an inspiration. He said now he does. It's me! He said he thought he knew everything there was to know about art. This is just the first week. I told him that him saying that inspires me as a teacher too! Best day ever so far!
New semester
I got the chance to start over and rearrange my room. Now I have bell-work and warm ups that help everyone get situated. I rearranged my U shaped tables in a tiny room into rows and gave each row a tool kit. Now nobody asks me for a sharpener or eraser. It's. Amazing.
Forever Young!
Student *referring to me*: is that a student? Me: I'm the other art teacher... Student *whispers*: I swear she was in my 5th hour... I teach middle school. FML
Heart melted a bit.
I overheard a student say that this class was the only reason she even comes to school. Good thing she has me 1st hour! *cough* sucker....

"Ms. G you've been to jail??" Was what a random student asked me today. A student I didn't have.... but I still wondered how the hell he would think such a thing. In shock I asked, what? As if I misheard. He repeated it and pointed. Apparently my red collared shirt on my teacher ID card looks like an orange jumpsuit hahahahahahaha

Organizing a physical activity for 6th grade is literally like herding cats. Today they couldn't stand in a circle.
Gain Some Perspective
Apparently, it's too early in the year to teach perspective to 6th grade... We tried a 1 point cityscape, and then a birds eye view cityscape. They still aren't really grasping it. This is project 4. Too soon I suppose.
This student is afraid of failure. Often times yelling that he gives up and rips up his work. Every time he messes up, he either demands another paper or flips out. For this project I only gave them one watercolor paper each. You can imagine how he felt about that. Well.... He started painting a dark Forrest, and then in the process he changed his mind and turned it into kraken legs coming out of the ocean. He still used the techniques I taught him. It looks quite abstract to me, but the colors work particularly well together! This piece is about changing his mind and fixing it instead of giving up. This. Is what I teach.
Dumpster Diving
Today, a student of mine (one who I had to stop a fight from happening and also asks for a pencil every day) Well, his binder was thrown into the trash and he wouldn't take it back.... With all of his subjects inside. Somebody fished it out for him, but he wouldn't touch it. I picked it up, hugged it and said... "I always find great things in the trash! It's not that gross, where do you think your pencils come from??" And the girl next to him just about died laughing.
Breakfast Club
I wrote my first detention today for Saturday school. I had no choice though... Chica wouldn't hand over her phone during a code red lockdown drill. Fantastic. Then at my other school, all these kids help me clean up after class! It's so kind, and it brings very different personalities together. Which is pretty cool.
Superhero Conferences
School 1 was superhero day... I wore a superman shirt under my dress clothes. School 2 was parent teacher conferences where I changed out of my shirt, became a complete undercover hero... Sat there for three and a half hours while 3 parents showed up. All supportive parents which is fantastic. But still... Soooo boring
Treasure
We talked about the brush being one of the four treasures of the Chinese scholar. We talked about the anatomy and what the parts were made of. Then, they were very interested in choosing their brush, and took care of them beautifully!
Swoon
We were starting a project on personal narrative and I showed a video of graffiti artist, Swoon. They were diggin the music, dozed off... And then really paid attention when she talked about creating artwork about her mother dying. They took it very seriously... And some of my students could really relate. It was a moment of great engagement.
F The Police!
So this insane screaming and swearing parent was calling the cops on my principal for trying to get her to leave the building. For swearing. In front of students… It must happen literally all the time, but I just happened to over hear it.
