Cheesman Park is a tough read. There is violence, abuse, toxicity, and stagnation. Unsure of how to move forward, Liz drifts along in her aftermath. It's also engaging, with her mother acting as a source of strength and determination, hoping to prod her daughter towards recovery.

In this collage, I aimed to capture those feelings. The claustrophobia of her situation, the toxicity of her old relationship, and the new one with Monica, being trapped, and yet, still having a light in the darkness. The collage consists of images sourced from National Geographic magazines and my personal polaroids. The materials were cut, folded and arranged by hand without glue or tape, and then a digital photograph of the work was taken.

Sabrina and Corina

Sabrina and Corina by Kali Fajardo-Anstine is a driving, imagery laced collection of short stories, that covers nearly every emotion. My favorite, Cheesman Park, is about a young women returning to Denver after the abusive culmination of a relationship in Los Angeles, and her experiences in those days afterward. The story feels very real, from the little details like the early morning LA fog to the long desert drive, to the pavilion in the park. The collection relies heavily on narrative and dialogue to progress the story, and it's done well enough that you can feel what the main character does. It is not for the faint of heart, themes of abuse, addiction, suicide, and violence all make appearances, but so does care, progress, and even hope.

With the origin of performance art being what we now know as live entertainment, I wanted to pay homage to the circus arts. The circus arts, typically wonderful spectacles, displays of strength, timing, balance, agility, flexibility, choreography, and skill. Always designed to dazzle an audience.

At what point, however, does that entertainment cease to entertain?

At what point does a persons skill move from "very bad" to "ok, not great" to "dazzling"? Is the value in the act itself or in the showmanship of it?

While the individual ends of the spectrum are clear (it is easy to differentiate "world class" from "god-awful" after all), the graduations between are less so.

For this exercise I chose the verbs to pour, to grasp, and to collect. In my short video, I grasp at water being poured into a pot.

Reading and Response 2

To me, GIf's are ubiquitous with the internet. They're a curious product of a lowered attention span and an unwillingness to commit to watching a video; an easily digestible form of media that literally has something for everyone. They're easy to make, easy to view, and easy to meme. Internet culture is very much about meme's, and gifs play into that easily. Reddit for example, will often put the context in a title, and while the posted GIF may have nothing to do with the subject, there will be an emotion or action conveyed that resonates with the community.

No Privacy In Public

You have no right to privacy in public.

Street photography in particular has a certain subset, and attracts, unscrupulous photographers. Legally, they're within their rights. Are they acting ethically? Is there any such thing?

This compilation of popular street shooters camera-work seeks to explore that idea, and to examine the rights of both shooter and subject. Some of the photographers are notorious for their brashness, and would even consider a critique against them a badge of honor. Should these photographers profit from their actions? Should the laws be made more strict? What value do their images hold, almost a shock and awe campaign against passerby?

Growth. Fruiting. Reproduction. Deliquescence. Death.

Mycelium, the main body of the fungi, remains hidden underground. The fruiting body appears only after certain environmental conditions are met. Spores release. Nutrients are reabsorbed. The fruit dies or is eaten, giving back to the ecosystem.

Creativity, inspiration, ideas; stay hidden within the artist. The work appears, and is shared with the community. The artist learns, from the process, and from criticism. The piece enters history, providing inspiration to peers, to students, and dilettantes.

In these ways, the life cycle of a mushroom can be seen as a visual metaphor for the creative process.
