In honor of pi day!
ok i wrote an entire essay on this for class but i keep thinking about it and i really need to get off my chest how utterly devastating it is that antigone truly is doomed by the narrative.
a lot of academics look at her story as an example of athenian literature which opposes the normative gender ideology of their society because antigone is a woman inserting herself into a political sphere with no conventional place for women, especially as it was often held in athenian society that obedience to men was a feminine virtue, which antigone directly subverts by not only standing against creon but doing so publicly.
but, antigone's actions were driven by her will to adhere to the social norm of surviving women in a family performing funerary rites for the deceased men. this isn't really touched upon in sophocles from what i remember, but antigone isn't just determined to complete polynices' funerary rites because he's her brother—the completion of these rites was a position normally held by women of a family, and the responsibilities of daughters to their families wasn't considered extinguished by marriage or any such thing, so even if antigone had been married to haimon by this point the responsibility still would have fallen to her—but she would have felt a duty imposed by the societal norms placed upon women to honour polynices. this therefore obviously creates a conflict — on one hand (μὲν) society expects her to honour her brother's funerary rights, but on the other hand (δὲ) if she does so she's not only publicly disobeying a male authority figure but in a way which threatens to prevent her from marrying and preserving her family line, which was also considered a daughter's responsibility.
in choosing to disobey creon, antigone has been rendered useless as a bride in his eyes, because this rejection of the status quo has resulted in her trespass of the societal boundaries of her gender and she's therefore no longer considered able to serve the expectations of women, so creon declares that she's to die. but if she hadn't disobeyed him, socially she's still failed to uphold the familial responsibilities demanded of her following the normative gender ideology, and so even if no one would have spoken up directly about it because she's followed creon's command, either by wilful perception or subconscious judgment she likely would have been seen as a traitor to her family on some level regardless.
what this means is that not only is antigone truly doomed by the narrative, where her choices render her a servant to social expectations of women whether she outright defies authority or unwillingly defies her womanly responsibilities, but that her entire narrative is ingrained with the very gender ideology that dooms her to begin with.
actually when antigone said her marital bed would be the grave she should have said that her grave would be her marital bed , meaning that she hates the fact that she has to get married and have sex , and be a part of a morales society that sells women , or or with the same line she could have ment that she would love the person shes marrying till the day she died or or that loving someone means constant change so each time she loves them its another tiny death or or ahe could have kept the original " my marital bed shall be my grave " and mean that her only reson to exist is to die and that she has renoucned all other function in the shake of dyinh for what she belives in or or that the highest form of love is dying for someone or or just fucking on top of graves . Can you tell im obssesed with antigone
Bought my uncle a burger and milkshake in exchange for letting me disrupt the holiest day of the week, NFL Sunday Football, so I could install a Pi-hole and free the household of ads...the thing abt the specific boomers I live with is they told me not to trust people on the Internet but they do not understand the algorithm or online advertising and think that Facebook has their best interests at heart. And every time I have tried to explain to them that no, blorbo from my dashboard is not selling my kidneys on the dark web but Google from your capitalism is definitely selling your web searches to every advertising company on the planet, they think I am paranoid. How could their personal friend Mark Zuckerberg want anything bad to happen to them etc. I am fighting battles I did not know existed!!!
Update I have had Pi-Hole successfully installed for two (2) hours and have since learned that 40% of the web traffic in this household went to advertisements. FORTY FUCKING PERCENT. We live in hell. This is the greatest gift I have ever given my family that they will not understand or acknowledge or feel any gratitude for.
Update #2: it was rising all night but the number it finally settled on was...60%. 60% of the web traffic in this household went to advertisements. I can't tell if this high number is bc I live in Silicon Valley and probably am subject to the Algorithmic Internet in ways people outside of Silicon Valley are not or it is normal to have 2/3rds of your web traffic be ads, but it did make me set up a recurring donation of the EFF lmfao.
Okay I have had multiple people ask, so here are the useful websites that me and Beryl used to muddle our way through:
Using Pi-hole and Raspberry Pi (on the Raspberry Pi website, really good overview of what Pi-hole does)
Tumblr-archived Twitter thread about one household's experience with Pi-hole (this is what sold me on it. Also the tweets were published in 2022 and Pi-hole is actively being developed, so I think some of the teething problems he mentioned might have cleared up or are at least being addressed.)
Pi-hole website (gives broad strokes of the software and imho is not actually that helpful, however this proves that I am not making shit up)
Pi-hole documentation (read prerequisites carefully, you do NOT need the newest model of Raspberry Pi to run this thing!! You don't even need a Raspberry Pi at all, you can run it on a bunch of Linux systems however I'm very stupid when it comes to Linux and when my options are install and learn a whole ass new OS or spend $$ on a Raspberry Pi and hook it up to my TV with a wired mouse and keyboard I will unfortunately be spending money)
Privacy International's guide to setting up Pi-hole on a Raspberry Pi (bro this one saved our asses)
You guys can ask me questions if you want but I guarantee I will not know the answers bc I don't know shit about fuck, I just followed the directions and reaped the rewards. It did take us 2 hours to set up bc I'm bad at following directions (and it's kind of complicated if you've been out of the software game for a while like I have), and you do have to be sososo brave about fucking around with your internet provider's configuration. So make sure you eat before you do it!! However it has been so worth it for me so far, given that now all my devices at home are running faster and I'm not seeing any ads while web browsing. We will see what complaints my family comes up with, but I love it so far.
Also!! if you've never heard of Raspberry Pi, which I realize are not all of my followers are lost in the Silicon Valley sauce so you might not have, here's is their website and their page for using Raspberry Pi at home.
(And here is the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit that fights for digital privacy, free speech, and innovation, if you, like me, were presented with cold hard data about your personal internet usage and suddenly realized that our internet is fully a dystopia. haha.)
After a few months with pi-hole, I recently switched to AdGuard Home. It was recommended/is co-promoted in a pi-hole discord server, and it seems to be blocking a bit more successfully/consistently for me than the pi-hole did.
I also use Blokada on my phone when I'm not home and have the Windscribe browser extension which includes 10GB of free VPN traffic and has uBlock integrated into it. (AdGuard does technically make things that do this but I like those better; ymmv).
It all takes some setup and tinkering, but I highly, highly recommend taking steps to clear out some of the internet garbage and protect your info.

5 programming languages in 5 weeks | #5in5weeks Coding Challenge 💻
Hiya hiya! I wanted to create a challenge for myself but thought why not share it with other people! I decided I should dip into learning a bit of the programming languages I wanted to learn but always said “I’ll learn them later!” Later might never come with how busy I have become these days, so learning just the beginner stuff will suffice for now! And that is what the challenge is!
The challenge itself does not only have to focus on programming languages (I only said 5 programming languages for the people who are really new to programming or only know 1 or 2 languages) but the challenge can include frameworks and libraries.
Example programming languages:
☀ Java
☀ JavaScript
☀ C / C++ / C#
☀ PHP
☀ Ruby
☀ Python
☀ GO
☀ Pick 5 programming languages you want to use for this challenge - bonus points if you never worked with the language in the past
☀ Learn the basics of each language e.g. syntax, what environment to work in, learn how to print, basic maths, etc
☀ Learn each language for 7 days - it does not need to be 7 days in a row (those who are extremely busy) but bonus points if you do 7 days, 5 weeks consecutively
☀ Use the hashtag #5in5weeks or #5in5WeeksCodingChallenge - to track your progress for your blog and for others to see on Tumblr (or anywhere really)
☀ OPTIONAL: you can include pictures on your posts
☀ OPTIONAL: on the 7th day of each language, build a simple, basic project! You can share it on your post, if you wanted
In the posts, you can talk about what you learnt about the language. If you wanted, you could include the resources you used to help you learn. Talk about what you found easy to understand and what was hard to get the grasp off! But to be honest, you can talk about anything!
If you choose to include the mini project at the end of the week, you can talk about the project, again including the ups and downs!
These prompts are completely optional! But I will definitely be using them~!
💌 Day 1: What are you most looking forward in learning [insert prog. language]?
💌 Day 2: What are your three goals with learning [insert prog. language]?
💌 Day 3: How do you print “Welcome to Earth!” in [insert prog. language]?
💌 Day 4: What has been easy so far from learning [insert prog. language]?
💌 Day 5: What has been difficult so far from learning [insert prog. language]?
💌 Day 6: Favourite topic so far from learning [insert prog. language]?
💌 Day 7: Will you continue learning [insert prog. language] after this challenge? Why?/Why not?
I really hope I can complete this challenge! I really want to try some languages I have been scared of continuing or trying, e.g. C++...
Again, this challenge is more for me to track my progress but anyone else can join!
That's all and have a happy day programming! ♡

I always though the reason Andy Weir (the author of the Martian) is my favorite author is because I LOVE realistic sci-fi and snarky writing. But as I’ve been reading his latest book I realized that I love his writing because his characters fight SO HARD to stay alive. I’m sure many ppl can relate to being kinda inspired by such a strong will to live. Anytime I feel like life isn’t worth it, that dying Would be easier or better somehow, I just think about how fucking hard Mark Watney or Ryland Grace worked to stay alive and it HELPS!?!? Idk, I think it’s because there fighting for themselves, not a loved one, and so it doesn’t reenforce the idea that you shouldn’t die cuz ppl would be sad but that you should stay alive because there is so much more you can do, and not like ‘I gotta leave my mark’ BS but more like I want to find more hobbies that I’ll enjoy and have fun conversations with ppl or eat something that isn’t a goddam potato or coma slurry. It’s just really refreshing to see a character like that, especially since there are SO MANY characters in media that are depressed/suicidal who are portrayed as supper intellectual and imply that anyone whose an optimist is stupid, idk I feel like we need more optimistic shit that ISN’T naive, because there’s no fucking way anyone is gonna tell me that Mark Watney wasn’t an optimist or that he was somehow naive and anyways long rant but I just wanna say that I want that, that I want to become like that.
y’know, i’ve always really hated how they changed watney’s rescue in the movie from the realistic beck rescue to the iron man rescue, but i just realized that if mark watney had seen the movie, he wouldn’t have wanted it any other way
Jesus Christ, the gut-punch of knowing Johanssen would have to literally eat her dead crew mates to survive if something went catastrophically wrong hits every single time I read this book. I wish we got more from the crew’s POV because how do you live with that knowledge? These are your friends, your family, and you have to reconcile that with the fact that, should it come to that, they’ll give up their lives for you. And you’ll have to eat them. That’s not even factoring in the possible romance for her and Beck, Jesus fuck. What a wonderfully horrific detail to get thrown into this book and then never mentioned again

Beowulf seems to be a poem about death: how to die, how to seek out death, how to meet it head on, how to make it so commonplace that it become and old familiar, how to choose it, privilege it, embrace it. Everywhere in the poem this deathly embrace spawns a variety of forms of closure, a continual need for resolution, the notion that the choice is heroic, inescapable, and reducible to simple binary oppositions – one or the other. And the other always loses.
