How to strengthen your brain outside of school:
Maybe youâre not in school anymore, or youâre taking a gap year to save for school and youâre worried about keeping your brain fast and not getting too lazy. Well, here are a few helpful ways to make sure that you keep thinking:
Read books daily. Always have a book on the go. Reading keeps your brain active and itâs a cathartic activity. If youâre feeling up to it, read self-improvement books, or informative books.
Watch Ted Talks. Not only are these videos filled with so much great information, they are also inspiring.
Think about where you want to be in the future and start preparing for that. If this means that you need to spend hours of your life prepping the perfect resume so you can get a job or internship that takes you a step closer, then so be it. If you want to start your own business Iâd highly recommend that you research the hell out of entrepreneurship.Â
Exercise. Exercise is important for the brain. It also keeps you happy, which in turn keeps you motivated.
Expand your vocabulary. Write down the words you donât know in books and look them up, keep them on flashcards and memorize them. Big vocabularies are so important and they do come in handy.
Learn a new language. You can do this for free on apps like Duolingo or you can actually go and take courses somewhere. This could help you so much if you plan on doing University abroad or even getting a job there.
Watch documentaries. Netflix can currently teach you about the Vietnam war, World War II, the Earth, the global food trade etc. Learn.Â
Watch the news, listen to it or read about it. Itâs important that we know whatâs happening right now and memes can distract us, but try to be informed. Maybe you can make a difference.
Learn a new skill. Itâs time to learn something youâve always wanted to, whether itâs cooking, sewing, art, photography, yoga, mechanics etc. Teach yourself.
Do online classes to boost your grades for University.Â
Do online classes because youâre curious. Donât stifle your curiosity. Curiosity is an asset.
Challenge yourself to do one productive thing every day. Donât let yourself go to bed without mental stimulation for the day.

10 productive things to do when youâre not studying
when im not studying i like to think that iâm still being sort of productive ?? (tho itâs totally ok to take a real break sometimes and scroll through social media or watch an episode of ur fave show) so hereâs a quick list of some things i like to do to take my mind off school!!
1. clean/organize your room
2. draw/doodle something!!
3. plan out your week/update your bullet journal
4. practice calligraphy/hand lettering
5. maybe try learning a few words from a new language!
6. make any phone calls youâve been meaning to, reply to texts or emails, answer tumblr asks, etc.
7. pick a fun topic and do some quick research on it! maybe youâll find something youâre really intrigued by!
8. do a quick workout! sitting in one place studying for hours on end leaves me with muscle cramps so moving around definitely helps!
9. meet up w/friends to catch up on what youâve been up to recently!
10. run some errands!!
as always, have fun & donât forget to stay hydrated and remember to take care of yoursefl!!
general study tips
this is just a quick list of study habits that work for me, as a straight aâs student
1. even if itâs not in your teacherâs presentation written on a slide, if you hear your teacher mention a fact, WRITE IT DOWN. you might need it later for a test.
2. when youâre rewriting your notes/compiling a study guide, pretend youâre making it for someone else. include everything, even if you think you know it. (unless youâre low on time, in which case, just write what you donât know)
3. when youâre trying to learn a new concept, pretend youâre teaching it to someone else. this is a form of active learning, and the act of breaking the concept down into steps that you can teach will improve your understanding of the concept. (for the longest time, i actually didnât even know this was an actual study technique, because iâve always done it subconsciously!)
4. donât over color your notes!! if you really need a key for all the colors, then youâre using way too many. try to stick with 2-3 pens/pencils. for me, i write most of my notes in black ink or pencil and i write the important concepts i might need to find quickly later (such as vocabulary) in red or blue pen.
5. have your water bottle next to you (so you remember to stay hydrated; this makes focusing easier as well), as well as any other things you might need during a study session so you donât have to keep getting up to get stuff (which is pretty distracting for me as iâm easily sidetracked).
6. make it a habit to write lists of everything you need to do by the end of the weekend (or the end of that day, depending on how much work you have). thisâll help you familiarize yourself with your tasks so you have a clear plan of what needs to get done.
7. (not really necessary, just something i like to do!) learn to eat with your non-dominant hand so you can eat and take notes and turn pages w/out ripping them instead of scrolling through social media. keep in mind that sometimes, meal times are for taking your mind off school so unless youâre really pressed for time, itâs not a huge deal if you spend this time w/passive reading, texting friends, etc.
8. when youâre assigned a research project, COME UP WITH A THESIS FIRST so you know what to research. try to get all your research done within the first two days or so, to have more time to plan out how youâre going to structure it. then get your draft done (something is better than nothing) so you can revise at your own pace instead of rushing at the last minute.
9. prioritize your homework!! as someone who spends hours fencing and even misses school for fencing tournaments, is part of symphonic band, and on the robotics team (build season is suuuuuper busy), i canât express how important this is!! if you have math first period, get that done first, whereas if you have math last period, you can do it at lunch and spend your time working on something thatâs due in the morning. donât do this all the time, but if you need to, know which teachers are more strict with due dates so if you really do need an extension, youâll be asking the least strict teacher and will have much better chances of getting said extension.
10. if you study at home like me, change into new clothes (comfy clothes, but not pajamas) before cracking open your textbooks. itâll help make you feel more refreshed and ready to start your homework, but not confined to uncomfortable uniforms from school. tie up your hair, if itâs long. try to study at a table/desk rather than in bed (for sleeping not studying) or on the floor (bad for your posture).
11. check out this post for productive things you can do when you arenât studying, but still want to be productive!
hope these helped some of you!!
xoxo, sal
Back to School/Uni Tips!
Iâm headed into my 3rd year of uni, so I thought Iâd make a post sharing my tips on how to do well in school, not burn out, and keep your mental health relatively stable.
1. Snacks - seriously, donât leave home without at least 2 substantial snacks in your bag. If youâre go-go-going all day and suddenly your sitting in a lecture about to crash cause you havenât eaten anything all day, youâre gonna want snacks. Some suggestions: Cashews (theyâre not super loud/crunchy, so theyâre perfect for lecture snackinâ), a granola bar, an apple, cherry tomatoes, trail mix.
2. Donât buy the textbook before you go to your first class - Iâve worked at a university bookstore for 2 years, and every year, people end up buying 700$ worth of first year text books, and then they donât even use them. Wait. and then wait some more. If there are required readings, then get the textbook, if your prof says there will be questions from the textbook on the exam, then get the textbook, but trust me, for 90% of first year classes (and a lot of other ones) you donât need the textbook. SAVE YOUR WALLETS
3. Take notes efficiently - honestly the best way to take notes, is type up the lecture notes that are provided, BEFOREHAND, and then during lecture, fill in the blanks/add information/take down any important things your prof is saying as you go through the lecture on your laptop in a different color. This way youâre much less likely to miss any important information, you wonât be confused about what to take down, and you wonât fall into the trap of taking down notes that are already being provided to you. After class, or while making study notes, copy these notes out by hand to remember what you learned.
4. Keep it simple - pretty notes are GREAT if you have the time, but once you get to upper level uni, and you have 100 slides of notes to turn into study notes, you will not have the time to make your notes look aesthetically pleasing. Just get the info down so you can focus on learning it.
5. Have a designated study space - i did all of my highschool homework and studying in my bed, and 90% of the time, I ended up falling asleep. My bed wasnât going to cut it for uni, so I got a cheap ikea desk, and itâs made me so much more organized and productive.
6. Take as much âyou timeâ as possible - take a bath. light candles. binge watch a tv show. veg out with a book for 4 hours if you have the time. do your makeup super special one day. get yourself that venti pumpkin spice latte with extra whip whenever you feel like it. Uni is a shitty time Iâm not gonna lie. Itâs stressful as f*ck, and whenever you can spare a couple hours or a couple dollars to TREAT YO SELF, do it.
7. Â If you have anxiety, CUT THE COFFEE. caffeine is a huge trigger for anxiety. Caffeine takes away from your sleep, messes with your adrenalin systems, and can make you super paranoid and anxious all the time.Â
8. If you think your in the wrong major, change it - I started in geology, and I HATED IT. Now Iâm in psych and I love it. It is never too late for a change of program. If you think youâre doing something you donât wanna do, or your not enjoying it, donât do it.
9. For mornings you have to be ready and out the door, or if youâre a person who always runs late, have a getting-ready routine and get it down pat. Have a mental list of things you need to do, and things you need to remember, and find out how much time it takes you. Get up at 8am, shower, wash face/brush teeth, get dressed, do makeup, pack bag, remember keys, wallet, laptop, notebook, pen and train pass, have breakfast, put on shoes, leave by 9am.
10. Utilize your time in transit. - finish a reading, go over flashcards, read study notes, listen to an album youâve been meaning to listen to, read a book, read some fanfic, idk but donât just sit there unless just sitting there is what you need.
11. Find a hobby or passion that is separate from your school/uni life. Whether its playing sports, or running, reading, collecting plants, making scrapbooks, curating a refined taste in tea, having baths, writing in a journal, find something that if youâre bored with watching shows or studying, you can go do it, and enjoy it, and get your mind off all the other shit thatâs going on in your life for awhile.

THROUGH A RAPISTâS EYESâ (PLS TAKE TIME TO READ THIS. It may save a life, It may save your life.)
An Article from
Neena Susan Thomas
âThrough a rapistâs eyes. A group of rapists and date rapists in prison were interviewâŠed on what they look for in a potential victim and here are some interesting facts:
1] The first thing men look for in a potential victim is hairstyle. They are most likely to go after a woman with a ponytail, bun! , braid, or other hairstyle that can easily be grabbed. They are also likely to go after a woman with long hair. Women with short hair are not common targets.
2] The second thing men look for is clothing. They will look for women whoâs clothing is easy to remove quickly. Many of them carry scissors around to cut clothing.
3] They also look for women using their cell phone, searching through their purse or doing other activities while walking because they are off guard and can be easily overpowered.
4] The number one place women are abducted from / attacked at is grocery store parking lots.
5] Number two is office parking lots/garages.
6] Number three is public restrooms.
7] The thing about these men is that they are looking to grab a woman and quickly move her to a second location where they donât have to worry about getting caught.
8] If you put up any kind of a fight at all, they get discouraged because it only takes a minute or two for them to realize that going after you isnât worth it because it will be time-consuming.
9] These men said they would not pick on women who have umbrellas,or other similar objects that can be used from a distance, in their hands.
10] Keys are not a deterrent because you have to get really close to the attacker to use them as a weapon. So, the idea is to convince these guys youâre not worth it.
POINTS THAT WE SHOULD REMEMBER:
1] If someone is following behind you on a street or in a garage or with you in an elevator or stairwell, look them in the face and ask them a question, like what time is it, or make general small talk: canât believe it is so cold out here, weâre in for a bad winter. Now that youâve seen their faces and could identify them in a line- up, you lose appeal as a target.
2] If someone is coming toward you, hold out your hands in front of you and yell Stop or Stay back! Most of the rapists this man talked to said theyâd leave a woman alone if she yelled or showed that she would not be afraid to fight back. Again, they are looking for an EASY target.
3] If you carry pepper spray (this instructor was a huge advocate of it and carries it with him wherever he goes,) yelling I HAVE PEPPER SPRAY and holding it out will be a deterrent.
4] If someone grabs you, you canât beat them with strength but you can do it by outsmarting them. If you are grabbed around the waist from behind, pinch the attacker either under the arm between the elbow and armpit or in the upper inner thigh â HARD. One woman in a class this guy taught told him she used the underarm pinch on a guy who was trying to date rape her and was so upset she broke through the skin and tore out muscle strands the guy needed stitches. Try pinching yourself in those places as hard as you can stand it; it really hurts.
5] After the initial hit, always go for the groin. I know from a particularly unfortunate experience that if you slap a guyâs parts it is extremely painful. You might think that youâll anger the guy and make him want to hurt you more, but the thing these rapists told our instructor is that they want a woman who will not cause him a lot of trouble. Start causing trouble, and heâs out of there.
6] When the guy puts his hands up to you, grab his first two fingers and bend them back as far as possible with as much pressure pushing down on them as possible. The instructor did it to me without using much pressure, and I ended up on my knees and both knuckles cracked audibly.
7] Of course the things we always hear still apply. Always be aware of your surroundings, take someone with you if you can and if you see any odd behavior, donât dismiss it, go with your instincts. You may feel little silly at the time, but youâd feel much worse if the guy really was trouble.
FINALLY, PLEASE REMEMBER THESE AS WELL âŠ.
1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do it.
2. Learned this from a tourist guide to New Orleans : if a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from youâŠ. chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!
3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car: Kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver wonât see you but everybody else will. This has saved lives.
4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DONâT DO THIS! The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU CLOSE the DOORS , LEAVE.
5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:
a. Be aware: look around your car as someone may be hiding at the passenger side , peek into your car, inside the passenger side floor, and in the back seat. ( DO THIS TOO BEFORE RIDING A TAXI CAB) .
b. If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.
c. Look at the car parked on the driverâs side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)
6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot).
7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN!
8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP IT! It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked âfor helpâ into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.
Send this to any woman you know that may need to be reminded that the world we live in has a lot of crazies in it and itâs better safe than sorry.
