The importance of stupidity in scientific research | http://jcs.biologists.org/content/121/11/1771
welp, i finally accepted an offer so it looks like i’m officially going to grad school!!
unmute this for the love of god
unstoppable force (my thirst for an education) vs immovable object (my excutive dysfunction preventing me from actually doing any work)
If Scientific Journals Were Honest
Nature: 90% whatever’s hot in bio right now, 10% other
Science: 2 pages of a really cool story, 50 pages of supplement
Cell: your entire dissertation edited down to 20 unreadable pages
PNAS: papers Academy members couldn’t get into better journals
PLOS one: papers non Academy members couldn’t get into better journals, but open source
eLife: papers people couldn’t get into PLOS one
Nature [insert field]: research that isn’t hot enough for Nature
Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics: we couldn’t decide if we were one field or two
JACS: chemistry you’re pretty sure is cool but honestly you’re not sure you understand
Angewante Chemie: JACS but German
Advances in Physics: scientific journals: a statistical approach
Astrophysical Journal: not nearly enough pictures of space
Actual Journal of Your Field: solid science, interesting, low impact

“I see where you were going here, Elizabeth, but you’re completely ignoring the effect semiotics had on the entire genre.”

this semester is gonna be good!
an intro to anthropology class that should be at least somewhat interesting and really easy.
i’m taking nonlinear dynamics and chaos, and the professor seems nice and i think it will be fun.
my thesis really shouldn’t be bad. there’s a lot i want to do, but not much left that i’d have to do before i start writing.
data mining and predictive analytics. a little bummed, i assumed we’d be working in python or R but we’re using JMP which seems like really dumb software. idk, trying to stay open minded, but it’s definitely targeted more for business people than math people which isn’t what i expected (it’s offered through the math department).
