I am deeply sorry for the image quality.
Also, Iām announcing a resolution. /obviously not an image resolution *sighs*/ Resolution: Post more original content.
These are some of the study habits and tips I have learnt / found most helpful in years 7-10. Itās mostly aimed at students in years 9-12, but can be applied to older and younger students too. Hope you find this helpful (:
1. Find a homework organisation system that works for you. Some schools (my school) may try to push particular methods on you, but ultimately you should use what is best for you personally. You can use a traditional organiser like a planner or homework app, or get more creative with something like a bullet journal system. I myself use a site called Trello, which although not designed for homework management works very well for it. Within aĀ āboardā, you can have seperate lists for homework that is overdue, due tomorrow, due soon, due in a long time, and done. Tasks can be moved between these lists as their status changes, and each task can be colour coded by subject and have a due date and checklist of subtasks / checkpoints. I find the system works extremely well. And remember, you can always use more than one system.
2. Keep a list of skills / concepts that you have trouble with, and use it as reference for getting help at the start of each class. This way you wonāt forget something that needs clearing up, and bits of information wonāt be missing from your knowledge when exam time approaches.
3. You need to know vocab, so get in to the habit of making flashcards.Ā Even if you understand the concepts behind a topic, you will not do well in an exam if you canāt communicate your knowledge through accurate, subject-specific terms. This is important for all subjects, but especially those with a lot of complex definitions such as biology.Ā
4. I know youāve heard this before, but please donāt leave your work to the last minute. I know it is hard not to procrastinate, but Iāve been using a technique this year that has made it so much easier for me. The idea is that rather than assigning a list of tasks that need to get done in the day and then stopping once they are complete (and leaving non-essential tasks for later), assign each day a particular length of time that you will study for. Work out approximately how long you need each night for homework + extra study and revision, and then adjust based on which days you have other responsibilities. Then, work until either the time runs out or you have no work left set (even if its not due for weeks, it still counts as set). If you donāt complete everything in time then keep going until all essential tasks (those due the next day) are done, and if you finish early use the remaining time for extra study and revision. Iāve found this technique to be all around beneficial - I donāt procrastinate much at all, I never have to rush on tasks because I left them to the last minute, I am way less stressed, and Iāve also improved how I manage the time I spend on homework.
5. Revise consistently, not just in preparation for tests and exams. If you do so, youāll have learnt all the basic vocabulary and concepts by exam time, and you can focus your time right before exams on deepening your understanding and completing practice questions. Iāll do a detailed post on how I schedule my revision sometime, but basically I make concept summary cards and vocabulary cards at the end of every week (for my maths and science subjects), and I begin other revision (practice tests, concept maps, etc) halfway to each test (eg. in week 5 for a test at the end of a 10 week unit, or at the end of term one for a unit that runs for a semester). I do this for both small unit tests and end of semester / year exams.
6. When it comes to test time, reinforce conceptual understanding through videos. Itās like youāre being taught the concept all over again, but in a summarised manner so you can work on remembering the key points. Also, things are often easier to understand when presented visually. You can also use this technique when you are struggling to understand a concept. Some great YouTube playlists for revising concepts are:

7. Studying with friends is fun, but donāt let yourself get distracted. If you are going to study with someone else, use them to help explain things and bounce ideas off, rather than as a distraction. Set an amount of time you are going to dedicate to study, then afterwards you can do something fun together.
8. Learn the subject so you could teach it to someone else. By doing so you ensure you have a complete and thorough understanding of the topic, without any gaps in your knowledge. Try teaching the content to a friend or sibling, or creating a mini-guide / lesson plan as if you are a teacher preparing to deliver the subject. Make sure you can elaborate on any questions someone may ask you on the topic.
9. Donāt study as soon as you get home from school, but donāt leave it too late either. Take a break when you get home to have a snack, check social media / emails, and maybe practice a musical instrument or do something artsy. Start your homework so you can complete 2/3 to ¾ of it before dinner, and then finish the rest afterwards. At least an hour before bedtime, stop studying and instead watch tv, read, or do something creative. This way you get plenty of sleep and donāt have to study for too long at once.
10. Work on applying theories to real-life examples and problems. This is another way to ensure you have a full understanding of all concepts and vocabulary. Your textbook should have plenty of application problems, or you could try writing a research essay or lab report to demonstrate your understanding. If youāre good at applying conceptsĀ to a variety of problems, it will make short and extended response questions in an exam so much easier.
Hope this was helpful (:
My Note Taking Method
This is how I take notes when I am doing online lectures, but it could also be used for live lectures as well.
1. Take notes from the slideshows in whatever form you generally like before you watch/go to the lecture. I personally like to draw charts and make lists, etc. on blank paper. Make sure youāre condensing the notes as much as you can, only write important things down - donāt waste your time now or when youāre reviewing with unimportant information. Choose a highlighter colour to do your headings, lists and definitions (I chose green for this).
2. Once youāve written out the notes, go back through and highlight key words and things you think are important (I chose blue for this).
3. Choose a third colour (I chose pink for this) and while you watch the video/attend the lecture, add in whatever small comments the teacher says that you think are important near the notes you made for that topic. This is where writing on blank paper helps because you have a lot more space for notes. This third time going through the material should clear up any confusions and will leave you with good notes.
This is my first kind of how-to, I hope somebody finds it helpful! Good luck to all my fellow studyblrs on their upcoming midterms, assignments, etc.
20.3.16// I made a poster on all the organic chemistry reactions weāve covered so far in the year. Itās a great summary sheet which should be useful come exam time!
Actual good first-time college student advice:
Wear jeans/pants that ābreatheā and bring a sweater, even if itās scorching hot out, until you know which building blasts the AC to 60 degrees F and which feels like a sauna
Backpacks with thick straps are your friend!Ā Messenger bags are cool and all but if youāre commuting with a lot of stuff, symmetrically styled backpacks are better for your back
You are your own person and you can walk out whenever you need to or want to, so long as youāre not disrupting the class.Ā Meaning you can go to the bathroom without permission, take a breather if youāre anxious, answer an important phone call, etc.
If you donāt like the class on the first day, if you can- DROP THAT CLASS AND TAKE ANOTHER ONE!Ā Itāll only get worse from there!
If you can, take a class outside your major; itās a good break from your expected studies.
You are in charge of your schedule.Ā Your adviser and guidance counselor is there to āadvise and guideā but if you donāt like certain classes and you can substitute for others, thatās your choice.
Consequently, if you are changing anything drastic in your plan, talk with your adviser and instructors.
Pay attention to your credit hours and grades. Ā Never leave this to the last week of school, you will be sorry and stressed beyond belief!
Unless itās a lab book or otherwise specified, go to the class for a week or so before buying an expensive textbook.Ā Some classes, while having it on their required list, do not actually use the textbook a whole lot and you might find some of it scanned online.Ā Rent if you can or buy used online (schools actually donāt give discounts).Ā Use your best judgement on what you think you need.
Tell the people who go up to you selling or advertising things you are not interested in that you are in a rush to class and donāt have time to listen to them.Ā Itās less rude and theyāll leave you alone.
The smaller the class, the better it is to have some sort of acquaintanceship with a couple classmates.Ā They might save your ass if you are absent one day or need to study.Ā And talking with them makes the time go by faster without it being so insufferable.
You donāt need to join a club or sport, but internships are cool and useful!
If you can afford it, take a day off once or twice each semester if youāre too exhausted.Ā Just be aware of what you missed and if it was worth missing!
Your health is the most important, this goes for mental health too!!Ā Note: College-age/upper teens is when mental disorders like depression and anxiety are most commonly diagnosed.Ā Most schools have therapy services, especially during exam time.Ā Look into it if you need to!
Communicate with your professor if you are having trouble with something.Ā Anything.
Eat and stay hydrated.Ā Bring a water bottle and snack to class.
All-nighters will happen but never go over 36 hours without sleep.
Itās going to be hard and there will be times you might think about giving up.Ā This WILL happen.Ā You just have to make sure what youāre doing isnāt making you absolutely miserable and/or there is something rewarding and positive to look forward to at the end!
I did none of this and it bit me in the ass every time so this is EXCELLENT ADVICE.
ADDITIONAL ADVICE
Donāt let a mental health day turn into a mental health week because you will be so screwed.
Pay attention to the syllabus and do not lose it. A lot of professors put all of the assignment due dates in there and ONLY in there.
If your school has blackboard or moodle etc. CHECK IT. a lot of professors will only post certain info there and not talk about it in class
Check your student email account weekly. A lot of it will be unimportant junk but sometimes itās the only way professors will communicate.
Check your student email multiple times DAILY.Ā
THANK YOU. Iām so glad i have resources like this queued up in my ācollegeā tag bc honestly i was so stressed before
Advice from someone who really fucked up their freshman year:
READINGS ARE NOT OPTIONAL.
I REPEAT. READINGS. ARE. NOT. OPTIONAL.
Put them in your schedule, read BEFORE class. And summarise it. For bonus points, come up with some questions about the text and go introduce yourself to your professor either after class or during office hours, and ask them about it. This will make them much more likely to remember you in a positive light (and possibly bump your grade up if you hit a hard patch.)
Your library will have a copy of your textbook. If you cannot afford to rent it, you can go to the library and borrow it from the front desk for a few hours whenever you need it. It is there for you, okay?Ā
SO DO YOUR READINGS.
