HER ANSWER ONLY left so many other questions kicking around in his head. “So I’m allowed to ask you why you’re at a rock show, right? ‘Cuz we are a rock band, last time I checked,” Reggie asked, though his grin was wide, guileless…. absolutely way too amused and charmed by everything Aimee was saying. — The accent didn’t hurt, either. He settled himself at the bar like she had, a step or two away from her because he wasn’t a creep, but close enough that he wouldn’t have to yell over the music that was starting from the heavy speakers, either. He was finding that happy medium of being closer enough to speak without being so close that he gave off murder-you-and-wear-your-skin vibes, or so he hoped. “Yeah, my mom isn’t that hot on this stuff, either,” he admitted. “But Guns N’ Roses are like royalty. McKagan’s bass slaps! Way harder than anything I could do up there, I swear! I bet if you took like a minute or two to figure it out, you’d be playing and jumping so good that Luke would be like sorry Reg, we gotta replace you, now go kick rocks.” He was joking, mostly because he wanted to watch her smile again, but he figured someone who had the guts to tell a dude in a band to his face that they didn’t even like the music he was playing onstage probably also had the guts to do pretty much anything that she wanted to do. She did look like the kind of girl who would change the world one day. “Anyway, don’t tell me you came all the way from wherever in the world you’re from just to see a show you didn’t end up digging.”
❛ well , i just broke up with my dick of a boyfriend , so my friends thought i should get out a bit ! celebrate ! ❜ and aimee will use any excuse in the world to celebrate ; even if a barside rock n’ roll nightfest isn’t at the top of her list. if reggie couldn’t already tell by her sunshine-y delivery, she is more than happy to be rid of adam. and subtly mentioning that in a way that answered his question was the perfect way to mention that she was single and currently trying to mingle with him. he’s definitely trying too hard to flatter her though, saying things that made zero sense like she would be a better bassist than him. still, that’s not to say it isn’t working like a damn CHARM. reggie’s little smile and the quirk of his brows go perfectly with the way he’s trying to appeal. it doesn’t even matter that his competition isn’t much competition at all ; it’s only been five minutes and aimee can already tell that he’s a sweetheart. and she isn’t used to that, the way he gives her space and asks actual questions. it’s nice. it’s appreciated. ❛ but even if i didn’t necessarily dig the music, that doesn’t mean i didn’t like the show ! you’d have to keep on giving me recommendations for good rock music, though. i really don’t know that much about music at ALL ‘side from the fact that the stuff on the main radios will do in a pinch. i tried to play the recorder in school ‘cause of some weird music class cult curriculum the headmaster introduced, but my teacher took it away ‘cause i nearly blew out her ears tryin’ to play hot cross buns. ❜

❛ wait, what? ❜ if she’s being honest, there’s a split second of panic at the question, aimee’s whisper sounding far too i know a secret for bell’s liking — but it subsides fairly quickly as she continues speaking, and her fear is quickly replaced with a relief and a fondness for her friend. she smiles brightly at the other girl, biting down on her lip to stamp down a laugh. misguided as it is, the concern is sweet, and she doesn’t want to make her feel bad. ❛ aimee, it’s not real. ❜ well, it is, but she doesn’t need to know that. it doesn’t hurt, though, and while she can’t directly tell her that, hopefully she can ease her concern anyway. ❛ it’s just a costume, the tail’s made of silicone. i mean, it’s kinda a pain to take on and off, especially when it’s wet, but it doesn’t hurt. ❜
❛ does that mean you had to have tail fittings ? like when you’re tryna get a homecoming dress at 1- 3 -5 but your waists a bit too big ? ❜ aimee’s head tilts, seemingly weighed down by the new, groundbreaking information she’s been given. any concern she harbored is now gone, replaced with awe at the fact that they apparently just MAKE mermaid tails for people to wear. the pool she has back at her place suddenly seems so underused. she steps back only to suck in her stomach, hands coming to her hips as she does a little turn to the side, showing off. ❛ does that mean if i wanted, i could go and get a fish tail ? ‘cause if they’re like, exclusive or something i could go and do a swim test to prove myself. i learned how to jump in without holding my nose last summer ! ❜

no offense but i am forever in awe of aimee. the girl is treated like dirt by almost everyone. she’s taken advantage of again and again. she has self - esteem issues that present not in “i am uncomfortable with my appearance / personality”, but rather “i believe i am only good for my looks / helping or appeasing others.” and despite this, she is still just so genuinely kind.
and not because she feels she needs to be, but because she just is. she is an optimistic person. she wants to see the best in everyone. she downplays her own sexual assault because she has to be there for people in case they need her, not the other way around. she downplays it because it wasn’t the textbook definition of assault and she doesn’t want to overreact. and as she works through her trauma and her feelings and her anger, she still manages to retain this positivity and kindness. and she is so fucking strong for that!!!!!!!!! she is a beautifully brave and resilient character

❛ maybe you’ve just never been to a good one ! ❜ that absolutely had to be the case. even if you’re a loner - weirdo kid who sits off to the side in the caf at lunch, there’s something for you at a party. and aimee is a strict believer that anyone who says otherwise, even if they would rather sit at home and read a book which is totally okay, is just . . . a total downer ! if you go in with a negative attitude, you’re going to have a negative experience ; there’s no way around that.
aimee gives a playful shake of her head at the other girl’s words, happy to finally be in the position to impart some wisdom for once. it’s not often she finds herself in such a place.
❛ — i’m throwing one this weekend since my parents are out of town. it’s also to kind of celebrate breaking up with my boyfriend, but mostly the first thing ! ❜ she smiles as she takes out her phone and types out her address, poised to send it should she be given a green light. maybe even a yellow. ❛ yes, there’ll be some booze - hounds and potheas, but also some really fun people ! maybe you’ll make a friend ! ❜

❛ you mean you don’t feel bad for them at all ? i kinda thought they were cute together , ❜ she’s almost pouting, though it may be more because her drink is running empty than the fact that they’d just been front row to a very public breakup. everything is reminding her of adam these days. not in a romantic way, but in an OH GOD, I THINK I REALLY WANT TO BREAK IT OFF kind of way. underneath all those saccharine layers, all those designer pink clothes and top brand makeup, is a heart that beats every day in hope that it’ll someday get to make a big scene like that. aimee doesn’t want to be the center of attention or anything, but she does want to . . . well, prove something to herself, she guesses.
ugh, half buzzed at a party was NOT the right time to get all introspective and shit. aimee bumps shoulders with courtney, still huddled close to her from when they were watching the yelling match go down, and dumbly lifts her empty cup to take a sip. when she realizes for a second time running that there’s nothing in her cup, she tsks.

❛ um , do you think we could ? i don’t know why they had to play this song , ❜ it’s a very unique kind of grief she finds herself wading through. as sunset curve’s LATE LAST NIGHT blares from the house party’s speakers, aimee barely notices her drink sloshing in shaking hands before bell takes her arm and says something. aimee clings to her because she understands ; because she’s the only other person in here that could. the boys ( sans bobby, ) have been gone for a few months now, but . . . it’s not like she prepared for this when she came out to try and dance the hurt of it all away. if anything, she wishes this drink was a tad stronger. or that she was at home, curled up on the couch with a box of twinkies. it was still healthy to grieve real hard once and awhile, right ?
aimee leaves her cup on a corner table, not intending to come back for it, and walks along with bell. everything’ll be fine in a few minutes, she tells herself, nuzzling her cheek against bell’s shoulder. tears begin to prick at her when the song’s backing vocals jump in, and that’s when aimee picks up the pace to drag them into a random bedroom and shut the door tight.
the song is muffled through the other end. most things are, until she lowers her free hand from her ear.
❛ — well . . . seems like our luck, huh ? ‘least that means they got a demo track sold . . . ❜ the victory, if you can call it that, is so hollow. aimee finds that after that, she doesn’t quite know what to say. her arms cross, her head tilts back, and she stairs at the ceiling ; she waits. ❛ i forget. is this one of the long ones or one of the short ones ? ❜

❛ oh no , babes , are you not having a good time ? ❜ ro’s admission stops aimee dead in her tracks, the shots she’s carrying sloshing a tad over their rims as she momentarily forgets them. if there’s one thing she takes great pride in, it’s her parties ! she LOVES hosting ; even if the house always gets wrecked. and her mother always scolds her. and she ends up having more heart murmurs than she does good times. even if it isn’t necessarily fun for HER, it’s fun for her friends ! and at the end of the night when her mom’s favorite vase is broken and there’s random stains that may or may not be vomit on her couch, that’s what matters.
so to hear that someone ISN’T having fun ? that’s like . . . well, she may as well just shove her head in the oven or something. aimee sighs, shifting the tray of drinks to one arm as her other comes to rest around ro’s shoulders. she foregoes her dramatics to give the other girl a little squeeze. .
❛ — is it one of the football players ? did they take a piss in my mum’s potted palms again ? i get it, that would totally kill my mood too. ❜ she scoots them out of the way of a cluster of people standing in the kitchen doorway. in an impressive feat, aimee manages to set the shots down all while keeping one arm around ro. in heels. ❛ here, now that that’s done, why don’t we go get you something i know for sure isn’t spiked ? or maybe you WANT something spiked, we can do that too ! ❜
