     he had doubts about calling her up .          even  though  he  didn’t  necessarily  believe  in  the  gimicky  nature  of  the  holiday,    bobby  couldn’t  deny  the  romantic  weight  attached  to  it.        he  and  bell  don’t  have  that  degree  of  seriousness  between  them.       it  was,   once  upon  a  time,   something  he’d  wanted,    something  he’d  coveted  from  luke,   but  doing  so  now  is  directly  disrespecting  the    DEAD.       but  now  that  they’re  sitting  side  by  side  on  the  couch,    bobby  knows  he  made  as  right  a  decision  as  he  could  within  the    wrong    that  is  their  relationship.       it’s  her  first  valentine’s  day  without  luke.       she  barely  got  to  celebrate  a  real  one  with  him  either,    so  being  with  someone    (  even  if  that  someone  is  him,  )    is  better  than  nothing.      

  ❛    —   i’d  say  we  could  go  out,   but  . . .     ❜         he’s  kind  of    DEAD   to  the  public  right  now.      no  one,   not  his  parents,   not  his  publicists,   no  one   wants  to  see  him  on  the  streets  right  now.      bobby  feels  a  shred  of  guilt.      if  he  could,    he    WOULD    take  her  out.      he  runs  a  hand  through  his  hair  and  shrugs.       ❛    uh,   i’ll  order  you  in  anything  you  want.       and  you  can   . . .   pick  a  movie,   maybe  ?       the  night’s  young.  ❜

    ❛   then you’d be terrified of my dad ,   ❜         mitch  patterson,   the  absolute  style  icon.      luke  can  still  recall  the  way  he’d  shimmy  into  his  slides  on  his  days  off,   when  he  didn’t  have  to  be   too  professional,   and  walk  down  to  the  mailbox.      its  a  stupid  thing  to  say,   though.      bell  doesn’t  and  will  never  know  his  parents.      the  wound  of  his  absence  is  still  fresh,    an  angry  scar  across  where  his  heart  sits,    festering  and  refusing  to  heal  even  when  he  comes  to  places  like  the  aquarium  that  are  supposed  to  make  him  feel  better.       luke  hopes,   as  he  fumbles  his  words,   that  it  won’t  be  too  obvious  that  they’re  on  his  mind.

     what  is  definitely  obvious  though  is  the  fact  that  him  and  bell  have  a  thing  going,    and  he  would  hate  for  that  to  be  squashed  with  his  sob  story.      as  far  as  she  knows,   he’s  just  a  guitar  -  toting  band  boy  that   really   likes  watching  sea  creatures  swim  around.      bell  doesn’t  seem  like  the  type  of  person  to  think  differently  of  him  should  she  know,  but   . . .   it’s  not  exactly  an  easy  tale  to  spin. 

    ❛   i  can  promise  you  i  don’t  do  that,   though.  ❜         he  attempts  to  throw  a  wink  in  her  direction  as  he  taps  the  heel  of  his  checkered  van  to  the  floor.       is  it  too  late  to  come  across  as  charming  again  ?          ❛   —   no  need  to  be  afraid.  ❜
