I’m so glad that Nicole Herman is back to order Arizona a job and that’s probably how Arizona leaves. I’ve been wondering where has she gone to 😊

their respective jobs meant that nicole and addison had crossed paths many times over the last decade. they were both the best in their fields , and that meant conference calls and exchanging notes. things are a little different now. nicole can't operate any more , but occasionally was still called in to consult on cases. this was one of those days. and now , after everything was said and done , they sat opposite each other , nicole's hands folded in her lap. ❛ oh christ , i don't know. i want to hear that . . . that someone learned from me. that they saved a patient because of me. instead i get all these demeaning questions with how i'm coping with everything since the surgery. ❜ / @sheshcphcrd ( x )

he hadn’t put up much of a fight when robbins had studied under herman initially and began to take more of a focus on fetal surgeon instead of pediatric. it had given him more responsibility with taking over peds surgery and that had been fine with him. but the idea of robbins going somewhere? that was what messed with karev’s head just a little. she had been the reason that he turned out to be half the surgeon he was and the man that he was. he certainly wouldn’t have ended up the way that he had if it weren’t for her. it was hard to imagine life without her.
“the robbins-herman center for women’s health, huh?” he questioned, scowling at her. “s’not a bad idea. she deserves it.” he couldn’t deny that much.
after a successful conversation with robbins , she'd ended up sitting in her hospital bed listening to the quiet drone of the television in the background , something she doesn't often do at home. not when she could be busy dictating papers or assembling a talk on the more complicated matters of fetal surgery. head turns in the direction of the door when someone speaks , attention drawn away from the evening news as cordial smile draws her lips upward. ❛ —— doctor karev. ❜ she greets , indicating that she could identify the voice as she turns the television off. his hasn't changed much in the years since their last meeting. ❛ she does. ❜ nicole agrees , she owed her life , at least partially , to arizona robbins , and for that she felt the younger woman deserved all the opportunities that could be afforded her. ❛ i've been following her work. your's too , actually. i'm impressed. robbins left big shoes for you to fill , but you stepped up. ❜

nicoles words , her whole demeanour made this the slightest bit easier on amelia all in all . she was politely playing into her game and that was saying a lot for the other woman . how she wished there was more to her story , how still to this day did she wish she could say the ultrasound machine was fucked up , not seeing things it should’ve and her son was at playing with his father because who the hell needed kindergarten anyway but she couldn’t , and even if he was here he wouldn’t have a father because amelia couldn’t keep her god-damn head on straight . she’s almost too tired to continue the facade and so she takes a deep breath and drops it . what friend anyway? all her friends had healthy , beautiful children . ❛ i’m terrified , you know . that i only make brainless babies . that i’m bad luck or something , my worlds too cruel for them anyway . the world is . ❜ fucking hell , now she could feel the tears burning her eyes but she couldn’t and wouldn’t break .
a sniffle , their eye contact is sparse and amelia’s happy for that . she holds herself together so well nowadays that the tightness in her throat over someones words that she hardly knows in an unprofessional setting , are making her hate herself . ❛ are you almost done ? i … need to get outta here . ❜
nicole isn't sure that she believes in anything greater than humanity , any otherworldly power or being that moves them around a board like chess pieces. and on the same hand , she doesn't believe that bad things happen only to bad people. she'd met many worthy , respectable people who lost things , who suffered more than their fair share. mothers who didn't DESERVE to watch their child die a slow painful death. ❛ it doesn't work like that. ❜ she states simply , eyes remaining trained upon the hand before her. she's used to the tears parents shed , and often times she's found that it's easier to allow them the simple privacy of turning a blind eye. ❛ this isn't about luck , it's about science. you know that better than anyone. ❜
she's placing the last stitch when amelia speaks. she nods while tying off the nylon suture before cutting the excess and turning to toss her gloves into the garbage hand. a hand moves then , almost of it's own accord , to rest on the other doctor's knee , ❛ you know what , why don't you take a minute and sit here , take a couple deep breaths. i can step out if you'd like. ❜

the noise that escapes the older woman , it’s one amelia recognizes . the oh shit exhale . amelia’s sure that addison told her all of this at one time , but maybe she was too pissed off to pay attention at the time , and now she’s too sad to not hang on to every word nicole is speaking . one in every ten thousand — the number, it seemed so small and insignificant but to her , it meant everything . still means everything . ❛ so are you telling me that if i … ❜ for christ sakes, amelia . even if she knows , pretending she didn’t would’ve been nice . ❛ if my friend got pregnant again … would she need to be worried ? ❜ the question , it’s caring . not one that most people ask , or even want to know . amelia can’t decided if she’s fucked for thinking it’s kind of the woman to ask , or if nicole is fucked for wondering . maybe both but she answers anyhow . ❛ forty- three minutes. ❜ she remembers then no i’m not ready, not yet . ❛ he’d be five this year … today . ❜ oh how she deserves an award for not making a noise , or snatching her half stitched hand back to run .
nicole catches the slip. the ' i ' instead of ' she '. the simple difference of a few letters telling her what she already knew , that amelia had felt this devastating loss , and that she had wept over the smallest corpse imaginable. she sees it far too often , but that has never made it easier. she does it for the ones who survive. the parents who hold their children and smile , who glow with the knowledge that they'd survived an act that'd been killing mothers and babies for centuries. ❛ if your FRIEND decides to get pregnant , she would need to consider the fact that there’s a one in twenty five chance she will run into the same complication. ❜ she clears her throat again , ❛ but that doesn't mean she shouldn't consider children at all. just that she would need to know the risks. ❜
brows draw ever-so-slightly together. the look of sympathy that she was sure amelia didn't want. and so she drops her gaze back to the stitches before her in order to spare the other doctor. ❛ tell your friend . . . that i'm sorry for her loss. ❜

stitched up dominate hand meant no cutting , oh how she hopes things don’t get worse for nicole before she can do something . the room is quiet , she didn’t mean for this to happen , to say the words . ❛ is the reoccurrence of having an anencephalic baby really only five percent ? ❜ she’s a doctor , she should know . those cases though , she doesn’t work on them , refuses to . too many memories , she wants to wring her hands but she can’t considering the others being stitched . ❛ i’m just … asking for a friend, you know ? ❜ a breath, a force of a smile and then a sigh . a deep one for sure before she gestures to her sewn hand . ❛ thanks for this , i know it isn’t part of the job description . ❜
there's a slow exhale. as though she's only just realized what all this was about. anencephaly was a nasty thing to witness , not so much for the baby , who was doomed before it's life even began , but for the parents. loving parents who carried a child all those months only to have it die in their arms. all children's deaths were difficult to witness. she sighs heavily , ❛ anencephaly affects roughly one in every ten thousand births. ❜ she recites the statistic with expertise , ❛ —— but the recurrence rate is high. a parent of a baby with anencephaly has a four to five percent chance of a subsequent pregnancy being affected. ❜ head cocks to the side , her eyes still focused on the hand before her , not even breaking stride when she speaks again , softer , more understanding this time. ❛ how long did they live ? ❜
* AMELIA SHEPHERD ⁄ LACKSFILTER !
eyes stay carefully toward her injured hand and she sighs . ❛ some babies don’t even cry at all . they’re born , you know ? but they don’t make a single noise , until they do and it’s the worst noise ever . ❜ how she wished that she could shut up , keep her private and ultimately sad thoughts private . ❛ i threw the glass , and i didn’t mean to slice when i was picking it up . ❜ clearly she wasn’t okay.
she glances up from her work , only momentarily , in order to guage the other doctor's expression before returning attention to her work. she's normally not the one to stitch up cuts and scrapes. she felt it subtracted from her usual business of saving unborn babies. ❛ i don't need to be educated on the behavior of babies. ❜ she reminds the other , a knowing glance is cast upwards once more , lip drawn between her teeth for a moment , ❛ i'm usually not the kumbaya-type . . . but if you need to talk , i'm here. probably owe you considering what a bitch i've been about the radiation treatments. ❜
nicole rolls her eyes , feigning her annoyance at the slight reactions to pain that the other offers. regardless , she keeps working , expertly stitching up the other's wound , ❛ christ shepherd , newborn babies don't cry as much as you do. ❜ / @lacksfilter ( x )
