Today I accidentally said “we have located the location” instead of “we have arrived” and that’s just where my life is right now.

Someone told my daughter that brown eyes are ugly.

She’s four.

Today she told me tearfully that she wanted blue eyes like me (her mom) and her brothers, and that she won’t be beautiful without blue eyes.

I told her she was made of stars. I told her she was a sunset. I told her she was wished for and wanted- exactly as she was with her brown eyes.

But she still said she wished she had blue eyes.

Watch what you say around little girls. They listen and they internalize it.

The goddess wall- this wall is one of my favorite features in my house. The golden mirror is surrounded by famous women of myths and history, goddesses and legends. When you stand in the mirror, you are one of them. Whenever I feel weak, afraid, or damaged, I stand in the circle and remember who I come from. When my daughter struggles, I stand her in front of the mirror too, and I remind her- all these beautiful and fierce women are looking to you- because you’re one of them.

Attended school

Learned to read

Attended college

Worked in or plan to work in the field of your choice

Traveled alone

A bank account or credit card

Rented an apartment

Held a mortgage

custody of your children after a divorce

Married the person of your choosing

Birth control or an abortion,

Inherited or stand to inherit money or property -

And your daughter, sister, niece, cousin or granddaughter will too-

Then thank a feminist.

And remember that these rights are recent and built on the backs of brave women who came before you. Stand for feminism- so the girls of the future don’t have to fight so hard.
