it’s painful watching the girl he’s loved for years slowly fall in love with someone else, while he has to sit there and watch like it doesn’t bother him.
listening to the way she talks about him oh so sweetly, seeing her smile down at her phone everytime he texts, watching her slowly drift away as they get closer, every bit of it slowly breaks him down piece by piece.
but who is he to get mad, she was never his, he was never hers. all he’s ever been was her “best friend chris.”
but god, it still kill’s him. especially when she looks at him one day asking, “do you think he likes me back?” in that sweet voice of hers.
your heart drops and you slowly lift your head turning your gaze to the counter where your boyfriend was looking. your mouth opens and closes as you try to come up with a lie. “yeah, he probably just left it when you guys hung out last, i don’t know.” he looks at you, brows furrowing, “wasn’t there before i left.” he says bringing another handful of fries into his mouth. your stomach twits uncomfortably as you shrug, “i found it around the house, was gonna give it to you to give back to him.” your boyfriend eyes go from you to the unopened container of food in front of you, “are you gonna eat or…” your eyes shift quickly to the container of food that was now growing cold. “..yeah.” you say as you quickly open the container, picking up the burger inside. just as you’re about to take a bite your phone buzzes, both your heads turn, eyes landing on the glowing screen sat beside you.
you quickly grab the phone before he could have time to read the name that appeared. clicking on the message you slowly turn the phone away, just enough so it was visible to your eyes only. “forgot my hat, coming back to get it.” the text reads, you let out a nervous breath before typing back, “no, he’s home.” you press send and put your phone beside you, face down this time. you look over at your boyfriend who’s now leaned back against the couch watching you. “who was that?” he says signaling to your phone. “it was just my friend, they wanted to—” before you could finish your sentence your phone buzzes again. silence takes over the room as you hesitate. “are you gonna answer that?” he asks eyes going to look at your phone again. slowly you grab your phone again, clicking on the message on your lock screen. “its fine, i’ll be quick.” you look up from your phone for a brief moment catching eyes with the man in front of you, the one you’re supposed to be loyal to. “chris, i’m serious, he’s right here.” your boyfriend shifts beside you. “what’d they say.” you lock your phone and set it back down quickly. “nothing, they were just being stupid.” the room goes quiet again, only the low volume of the tv playing as background noise now.
the sound of a phone buzzes rings through to the air again, but this time it wasn’t coming from you. you watch as your boyfriend pulled out his phone, reading the words on the screen before he starts to type back, fingers moving across his poem quickly. you force yourself to look at the tv in front of you, forcing down a few fries that had gone cold long ago. “chris is coming by,” your head perks up at his name. “what?” you respond back a little too fast, “his hat, he’s coming to get it..” he says looking at you like it was common sense, which it probably was, but you couldn’t think straight in the moment. “oh.” you nod slowly, eyes going back to the screen as nerves bubble in your stomach. “i told him to just come grab it, i’m home anyways. he’s said he’s like five minutes away,” he continues, eyes focused back on his phone. “that’s fine,” you mumble quietly.
a knock on the door causes you to jump slightly, eyes darting toward the front door. your boyfriend gets up quickly, placing the container of food that was sat on his lap on the coffee table. you watch as he walks toward the door slowly and calmly. you try to find something to focus on as you hear him open the door and say something to chris, but your eyes keep falling back to them. chris walks in, hand running through his hair in an attempt to dry off from the rain. you grab your phone opening up tiktok to try and distract yourself, but the sound of chris shoes hitting the hardwood floor as he walks through the room heading toward the kitchen makes it impossible to focus on whatever video that was playing. your boyfriend shuts the door behind him, before trailing behind him. “it’s on the counter,” you hear your boyfriend say with a hum of acknowledgment from chris. your eyes slowly land on chris standing in the kitchen, red baseball cap in his hand. you watch as he speaks to his supposed best friend like he wasn’t just with his girl barely an hour before.
