Here is roughly what’s happening in Turkey.

The military officially took over the country. 

All media has been censored. Access to social media is cut and is only available via VPN servers. 

There are low flying fighter jets flying all over the country.

National news channel is under military control and is only reporting when military wants to report. 

There is a Nationwide curfew until further notice. 

President Erdogan told people to “go outside” and that “there is no greater power than the power of the people.” He is staying home himself. (Also note that he IS a dictator and that Hitler told his people to go out to the streets when Berlin was under attack too.)

Government figures are telling people to go outside to stop this. They are using religious propaganda to get people outside. There are prayers heard from mosques followed with “Go outside” announcements, every few minutes.

There have been reports of wounded and DEAD people.

 Please pray for the safety of everyone in Turkey. And if you are from Turkey, PLEASE STAY INSIDE.

What’s Happening In My Country: Turkey

People, I’m reporting from Ankara, Turkey, from my thankfully safe home… This is one of the strangest events in the Turkish history, and no one knows if it’s a real military coup, or a “fake” one organized by the government so that they can get stronger than ever. Right now, there are tons of jet planes flying above the city and bombing different places, such as the “palace” of Erdogan, the parliament, the building of the political party AKP, the national intelligence agency of Turkey.

Erdogan literally told people to get out, to the streets, and protest the coup, and “stand in front of the tanks”. And, shockingly, they did. Now, people are out in the streets, chanting “Allahu Akbar!” and attacking the soldiers. Everyone’s gone crazy, I’m so afraid that this will lead to a war.

The military took over the national channel of Turkey and forced a reporter to read out a declaration about the martial law. Now, the government has taken the channel back. The soldiers are getting arrested one by one. They declared that they had taken control of the coup, and I’m sure that everyone will consider them (the government, Erdogan, etc.) “heroes” from now on.

There are deaths, deaths of policemen, civilians… It’s scary, I’ve never experienced something like this. I don’t know how this happened, I don’t know who did this, I don’t know what’s happening and what’s gonna happen. I don’t know what kind of a country I will wake up to, if I can convince myself to go to sleep in this chaos. I don’t know if it’ll be martial law or Sharia law, or Erdogan declaring himself a dictator. I’m confused as hell.

But there is one truth: whoever did this, and for whatever reason they did this, this is not okay… I, and all the other people of Turkey, do not deserve to experience this fear, violence and chaos. Whatever happens, happens to the innocent. Let this be heard from all around the world, something strange, and something COMPLETELY CRAZY is going on. Let this be heard, this shouldn’t be forgotten. The world shouldn’t forget how a group of people literally played, and are still playing, with us like we’re toys.

In the following hours, they may cut off our internet, they may ban us from sharing the news with the world, they have done it before. For the sake of the people of Turkey, and for the sake of our world’s future;

Yesterday, I had a strange day. I finished around eight tasks, which I was sure were going to take all day. So I was left with this void to fill, floundering for something to do that wasn’t binge watching House MD on Netflix.

Here are some things I could have done (and hopefully some things you can do):

Are you learning a second language? Interested in starting one? Use your free time productively on Duolingo. Free to sign up, awesome way to imporve your vocabulary but subpar way to learn verbs or grammar.

Maybe Duo isn’t your thing, but you still need to get some L2 practice in. Try writing a text in your target language reviewing the last book you read!

Speaking of books, I bet that during intense study times, you don’t get the time to read as much as you’d like. Take this free time to crack open a novel and kick back.

That essay you kicked ass on the other day? You know the one, you proofread it like four billion times. Do yourself a favour and run it through Grammarly. I guarantee it’ll find something you missed.

You may have done your math homework, but practivce problems never hurt anyone. Open your textbook to the relevant chapter and challenge yourself to do as many problems as you can in 20 minutes.

Alternatively, watch a Khan Academy video on your math/science topic of choice. I find that these videos often explain things from a different perspective, and that can be super helpful!

Conversion therapy for queer kids. Let me repeat that. CONVERSION THERAPY FOR QUEER KIDS.  Some members of the RNC even wanted to endorse it more explicitly than they did.

Zealous opposition to same-sex marriage. Here’s the quote:  “Our laws and our government’s regulations should recognize marriage as the union of one man and one woman and actively promote married family life as the basis of a stable and prosperous society. For that reason, as explained elsewhere In this platform, we do not accept the Supreme Court’s redefinition of marriage and we urge its reversal, whether through judicial reconsideration or a constitutional amendment returning control over marriage to the States.”

Reversing the Obama administration’s order to grant trans students access to restrooms, locker rooms, etc. The Republicans feel that such things should be based on biological gender, not gender identity.

Gender discrimination. To quote Time magazine: “[T]he platform committee voted against including the word “gender” in a list of types of discrimination that should be opposed.   On Tuesday, one member described the attempt to add that word to a list including qualities like race, sex and creed as a “sneak attack.”

Repeal of the Johnson Amendment. The Johnson Amendment currently prevents churches and other tax-exempt organizations from organizing politically, endorsing political candidates, etc. Repealing it would throw separation of church and state out the window…not to mention that it would give evangelical churches and televangelist organizations much more power, driving the country further to the right.
