kori, right here, fills his heart to bursting.  one of his dearest friends in the world, someone he has loved since he was a kid.  kori, who makes him better just by virtue of being near her.  of course if this is going to happen it’s going to be with her.  he lets out sort of a shaky laugh when he forehead touches his.  

“ hey, don’t cry. ”  he pulls back to kiss her forehead, smiling against the warm glow of her skin.  except he’s about a minute from tears himself.  god, this is more to process than he knows what to do with.  okay.  okay, they’ve got this.  dick can’t say he really has a good idea how to parent – his templates are shaky at best.  his parents, they had loved him, of course.  but he’s not going to pretend that raising a kid in a circus is a good idea.

and bruce was…well, he was bruce.  but dick knows, without a doubt, how to love.  and they can start there.  “ so – place your bets now, star.  boy or girl ?? ”

somehow, it makes her cry more. there’s nothing sad in it. kori has no regrets in the way her life has panned out. there is shock, even now. there is uncertainty and fear. the shaking of her hands, the sound of dick’s heart beating. his cool lips against her forehead, breath wavering. they are both terrified. overwhelmed. 

but they’re in it together. and with that knowledge alone, kori has the distinct notion that they can face anything. even parenthood. she wipes at her cheeks quickly, thinking about her question. about the way she feels now. it’s a joke, at least in part, something to make her smile. and it works, but she’ll take a stab in the dark anyway. 

“ boy. ”

she has a decent chance of being right, doesn’t she?

oh.  oh, god.  uh.  holy shit, dick’s blood is rushing in his ears.  this is not the direction he had been expecting.  he doesn’t know whether he feels relieved or more scared.  he just knows that he’s about to fucking vomit one way or the other.  objectively, this isn’t a bad thing.  it’s…it’s just ten times what dick can handle at this particular moment.

“ you – mine ?? ”  how can they even…even procreate?  she’s a flipping alien.  and it’s not like they haven’t generally been careful anyway.  they’ve both had more than a few lovers between them, it’s just a hygienic thing to be careful.  dick looks down at their hands, sienna against brown.  he closes his eyes for a few seconds, allows himself to think about how infinitely preferable this is to kori being seriously sick.

       “ — kori, ” dick says, no more eloquent than a few seconds ago.  thankfully, they’re both tactile creatures, and he doesn’t have to hesitate when he pulls her against his chest, hand resting lightly on the back of her neck.  

   frozen like that, dick can’t even begin to imagine what this is going to mean for their lives.  he loves kori so much it sometimes aches, but generally speaking when he thinks of her, its as his best friend.  it’s been a long time since he imagined this kind of future between them.  he’s not disappointed, of course.  there’s just a whole lot to process in a second.  and he doesn’t know what to say to make this easy.  

there’s no good or right reaction for this, is there ??  “ you’re okay, though ??  that’s what matters right now. ”

english is not kori’s first language, and though she speaks many, she isn’t sure what words there are to reassure dick in this moment. she isn’t even sure that she is reassured. she’s not dying, and that’s an upside. she isn’t ill, and that’s also an upside. but though she has wanted children for a great deal of her life, kori was never allowed to be one, herself. isn’t sure she knows how to raise one. only knows how not to. 

wrapped up in dick’s embrace, it’s a little easier to think that this is feasible. it’s still a long-shot. still a thousand impossibilities, but it’s doable. maybe. it’s an outcome she isn’t as desperately fearful of as death. she presses her face against his shoulder and sucks in a breath, taking the smell of him and a sense of reassurance with her. the uncertainty is palpable, and there is no end to the number of things that could go wrong. 

but if kori were ever to have a child, of course it would be with dick. even if their love changed. even if their entire lives were different, of course it is him. defying the odds, as he always has. 

“ i am alright. ” she pulls back enough to look at him, to cup his face in her hands without shaking his hold on her. x’hal. what a life it is they’re living, where tamaranean and human can have progeny. tears start in her eyes and she doesn’t bother to stop them, resting her forehead against dick’s, long fingers bracketing his cheekbones. 

“ i am alright. ”

dick is too wrapped up in his own anxiety to hear the way her heartbeat threatens to break out of her ribcage. also he doesn’t have super hearing. also he’s staring at the floor like it will answer his questions. like it will save them some great tragedy. kori swallows back her saliva until her mouth is dry, until she knows she can’t stall anymore. wordlessly, she sits beside him, rests her head on his shoulder and takes a selfish moment to steady herself. 

bruce was good for running the tests for her. for keeping a secret for her. for doing what she’d asked and offering more. she hopes he doesn’t feel compromised or used. notes that this is a thought for a different time, turns and takes dick’s hands in hers. 

“ i requested that bruce run a few extra tests for me. ” liar. it was just one. the only option left that didn’t mean impending death. she almost wishes she had been wrong, just to spare the drama. awash with feelings, she waits until dick’s eyes can focus, until they’re clear enough that she knows he hears her instead of his own fear. another swallow, trying so hard to run her mouth dry that she doesn’t think about it anymore. 

“ the symptoms line up with one other... condition from tamaran. i did not think it was--possible. ” silence, tense and worried. “ i am with child. it is yours. ”

    generally speaking, dick is kind of a paragon of optimism.  he’s good at putting on a brave face, good at telling people that everything’s going to be okay.  but he’s sure that kori can feel the uneven, terrified thump of his heart in his chest as he pulls her a little closer, holds her a little tighter.  but he has to calm down, has to find the calmness in himself.  cool, collected, dick will have to pretend, for a moment, that this isn’t kori who’s hurt.  

otherwise fear will paralyze him.  this is just one more problem that needs solving, and he can solve it.  it can be solved.  “ okay.  well, that’s a possibility we’ll have to take into account.  we’ll move up our trip to your island.  but first, we need to get a sample of your blood.  we’ll get it over to people a whole lot smarter than me, see if they can find any irregularities that might have been caused by something like the pill. ”

once they get a blood sample out, dick will fly her out to her supposed island ( and, honestly, how did he not know she had an island ?? ), and they’ll look for answers there, too.  “ i’m calling robin; he’ll bring us the batmobile.  we’ll get you to the cave, get someone to take a look at you. ”  

it’s all very dramatic, and every reply she can think of sounds over the top even to her--which of course means that it’s three times as dramatic as she thinks. she wants to say something. wants to offer some kind of dick-style optimism or quippy response, but her brain won’t get that far. it’s like all she can think about is what this could be if it isn’t the tamaranean flu, and none of the options are good. the pill. a virus she’s never heard of. death, disease, and despair. 

kori feels like she’s falling again, and her breath cuts short. her eyes flash again, and she thinks maybe--as she catches sight of herself in a window as they pass--that that particular symptom has more to do with panic than anything else. but maybe she’s over-rationalizing. 

“ there is not an antidote. ” she doesn’t mean to say it at all, much less to dick, but it falls from her lips anyway. that had been the first question she’d asked upon its introduction--how do we stop it? the answer had been, quiet and stern, we don’t know. it’s an anchor in her gut now, and she looks up at him. uses one hand to make him look at her. “ this could be very bad. ”

he wasn’t as observant as bruce, but he had a trained eye and caught the shaky landing, and the falter in the glow of her eyes. his first instinct was to check for injury, but as far as he could see and tell she wasn’t hurt. at least, not in any obvious way. “—are you alright?” because, yes, the shipment was important, but he wasn’t about to send a teammate into a fight if they weren’t at 100%. not of it could be helped.

the question caught her by surprise. she did not expect--though maybe it said more about her than about them--for heroes outside of her teams to be concerned for her, however mild that concern was. she nodded, sharp and without hesitation. “ i am fine. thank you. ”

landings are kind of dick’s specialty, but this one is gonna put a smudge on his record.  his mind is whirring through possibilities, as he helps kori to sit up.  not so much impatient as overly cautious, dick settles for picking her up himself.  his weight settles, relying too much on his back leg.  but it’s not a bad enough injury to keep him from getting them both back to the tower.  more pain than actual injury.

his main concern has to be getting them out of here.  the immediate threat has been handled, but they’re not exactly low profile.  if someone thinks they can make easy targets out of nightwing & starfire, it’s going to be a much harder day.  

“ i’ve got you, it’s alright. ”  except maybe it’s not.  dick doesn’t know enough about tamaran physiology to diagnose her, but it feels bad.  he doesn’t think he’ll forget the flickering behind her eyes for the rest of his life.  kori’s a light that just can’t go out.  he won’t make it through that.  dick shakes his head, clears the dark train of thought.  that won’t help either of them.

“ have you been exposed to the pill ?? ” he asks suddenly, eyeing her for a few seconds.  “ we don’t know how that might interact with alien species. ”  it’s a pipe dream, but at least it’s a thought.

the urgency of their plan to go to her island increases tenfold. kori knows she is not well, and it’s clear by the look on his face that dick does too, despite his attempts to placate her. to placate them both. she wants to insist that she can walk, at the very least. that he’s injured and he shouldn’t push himself. she’s sick, not crippled. but in a way, she is. her head falls against his shoulder as kori allows herself thirty seconds--and only that--to find comfort in the way dick holds her. her face tucks in against his neck, her lips a quivering line as she fights to pull herself together. 

terror is not a thing koriand’r experiences often. the pill. x’hal. the thought had not yet crossed her mind, but-- 

“ there was an incident... a week or so ago. but it should not have... ” but they didn’t know. operating under the assumption that the sacd had not tested the drug on other species meant that it was a vast and endless world of possibilities. possibilities, that is, that could end in this kind of reaction. theoretically. kori shivered, the green in her eyes flickering once again. “ maybe. ”

the thing about working with someone as long as dick’s worked with kori ( or really any of the titans ) is that you can kind of anticipate how they’ll think and move.  and unless it’s a threat that they haven’t dealt with before, they work in an automatic sort of tandem.  kori handles the sky, dick handles the ground.  dick leaps from a building with no plan for a landing, and kori’s his net.  

fighting with the titans, fighting with kori, is as easy as breathing.  dick is a little more wary, knowing that kori is sick.  but, to be honest, he’s not overly concerned.  tamaranean cold, probably.  nothing the two of them can’t fight through.  dick’s so caught up in the easy partnership of it, that he almost misses that one of her starbolts looks wrong.  weaker than he’s used to seeing.  there’s something off enough to catch his attention.  so as an escrima staff is thrown to knock out the last assailant, dick is moving without thought.  he scrambles up the fire escape as he sees kori falter.  she’s a few stories up, and – fuck.

 “ – star !! ”

she’s actually falling, and dick can feel his heart in his throat.  it’s no easy feat to gain purchase on a window sill well enough to launch himself from the side of the building.  the weight of her falling drags him down faster than he expected, throws off his balance, but he gets his arm around her waist, and fires a grappling hook with the other, towards a street lamp.  the speed and weight of their descent is too much for it, but it does the job of at least slowing their fall.  their landing is hard enough to drag an asphalt burn right through the leg of his costume, and the roll that follows to avoid the falling street lamp probably earns him a few scratches and bruises, but — 

 “ jesus, are you okay? ” he asks worriedly, hand on the side of kori’s face as he urges her to sit up.  there’s something wrong with her eyes, too.  jesus christ, he’s gonna be sick if this is something serious. 

of everything kori could possibly lose--and there are a lot of things, tamaran has remained free for so long for a reason--her flight is easily the most detrimental. her primary method of transportation, particularly in battle, it all but invaluable to her. to her team. she takes the skies while they take the ground, the water, the sub-terrain. she draws attention away, creates and endless diversion, a distraction all by the virtue of her species. even in the midst of her body’s rebellion (sincerely, she hopes it to be just a virus. that, she can handle. the alternatives are much more sinister.) she glows with a vibrant flame no one can put out. 

--except... maybe, they can. 

she doesn’t really feel the fall, at first, but that’s at least in part due to a brief loss of consciousness. she’s flying and then... well, and then she’s not. plummeting, so fast, so hard she’ll leave a crater in the streets. in the alley. in the building. she can’t turn herself fast enough to see what she’ll hit and it’s almost that which terrifies her more. faintly, the wind whipping in her ears, she can hear dick--nightwing--yelling for her. and that’s even more terrifying. he sounds so scared. so, so unbelievably frightened. it shakes something loose in her and her voice cracks in a scream, right as his arms close around her. 

the fall is a rough-and-tumble the likes of which kori hasn’t dealt with in many years, knocking the breath clean out of her, half-spread against Dick’s side, the other half against the concrete. his words too sharp in her head, this time, too loud as the dizziness starts to fade off. as she sits up, grappling for his other arm as support. 

“ i... i do not know. ”

    “ cheap or not, i’ve got no doubt it’d be worth it. ”  he’s smooth with it, clearly.  or he thinks he is.  one of the two.  “ should i call you, or are you free now ?? ”

the more he talks, the clearer it becomes where he believes this night to be going. kori can’t say she’s opposed: it’s been entirely too long since she’s shared a bed--or a bathroom stall, as it may be--with another person. entirely too long since she’s felt the gravity of someone who wants her like that. “ i am free now. ”

the corner of kori’s lip turns up in a smirk. men did like oggling. particularly when she was in costume, but also otherwise. there’s a sort of tension in this moment, the kind that she hasn’t felt in a while, that has her pulse kicking a little faster than usual. “ i am a cheap date in that regard. ”

it was to be expected that during a crisis not many people were readily available to help. this whole place was getting worse by the day, and if they didn’t stop it soon the pills would no doubt spread and that was the last thing they needed. so when he found the shipment ready to haul out to neighboring cities and districts, he called it in, for anyone who was available to answer. at least someone had. “see that? over there? we need to stop that boat.”

kori landed shakily, the green of her eyes undulating in brief flashes before settling on their usual color. a faulty toy, a light bulb going out. inhaling deeply, she flexed her fingers, directed her attention to barry and then to the scene before them. stopping a boat. it would be easy work; she’d certainly done harder things in the past. stopping space crafts was infinitely more challenging. a nod of her head. “ shall i provide the diversion mr. flash? ”
