Colress stretched the syllables of his brother’s demise, as if a joyous recollection of the fact he’d perished quite a while back. The pleasure he took was fleeting, settling back into the apathy he’d experience when the news was first delivered. 

“Henceforth, comparisons to him are obsolete. If I were of any lesser value than he, then I’d be the one to die first.”

Yellow eyes narrow to analytic slits, the nonchalant aura decaying into a haunting sense of familiarity after a wave of Colress' wrist. This little shit. They look so familiar. Uncannily so. This exchange of opinions was veering onto an unpleasant track, but habit tethered Colress to a lust for argument.

"And so, any opinion conflicting with yours is disgusting? How well does that play out in your ploy to convert others to your way of thinking?"

"Uncle." Mona breathes, scared of what he might say or do to her in case she disturbs his thoughts. "Can I have a pokemon? Please?" She asks, bracing for his yelling.

“Why so timid, Mona dear?”

He picked up on the tremor in the girl’s voice like a lion caught on to the scent of something wounded and bleeding. While he could and would be upfront with his vexation of the right buttons were pushed, Colress found this fear intolerable. A pokemon would give the girl something to occupy herself with, especially when Colress had more important things to keep up with. More important than playing babysitter for a child that wasn’t even his. 

“You may," he agreed, "at your age, it is about time you do something productive. Say, would you like to come with me to assist you in choosing one?”

"So is this what I must make do with?"

A single voice, quite echoing despite its smooth-edged nature, resonated from the center of what was to be the owner's new residential lab. It did not sound as thrilled as it could have otherwise been. 

It lacks the smells and associations that told Colress this is where he was supposed to be. He didn't like concrete floors, for stains tended to seep into where they manifested, and  earthy smells  that it teemed with were not welcoming, but the shining new equipment and what he was told to be a sprawling complex past this single laboratory. He understood the dire need for secrecy, but something about the aura of the place was too dank to suit Colress' fancy.

 As he stalked the room with a gait like a predator, observing every cranny in the walls and running his fingertips over whatever was in sight, the hum slipping from between the researcher's lips assumed a more satisfied tone. He pecked at the keyboards to throw up holographic images and incomplete charts, and his inquisition only ended when his revolution around these parameters were complete. It enraptured him for no more than a sum of a few analytic minutes until Colress was more concerned with tasks ahead, and growing anticipation for them to come.

"With his money, I would've expected Ghetsis to do better..." Colress scorned, although it was a comment barely more audible than his breath, not intended for the audience of the cameras staring at him and rotating on avian necks to track his movement. What a paranoid.  "...although I do suppose it has what I need, for now."
