I thought some of you guys might be into this: A TED Talk about costume design! Kristin Burke is a pro costume designer and has a lot to say about the way costumes influence our perceptions of characters onscreen. Which, as you probably know, is my #1 favourite topic.

I actually found out about this video because I follow Kristin Burke on Twitter (@frocktalk), so I’ve also noticed that she designs the costumes for the Sleepy Hollow TV series. "You know, I gotta say when I first started working on Inception, some of the drawings they showed me of their ideas for that character was, uh, sort of schlubby, sort of like, well, he’s the tech guy, he runs the machines, you know, so maybe he should be wearing some sneakers and a plaid shirt et cetera and I was like ‘No, no, no.’

This guy is in charge of making sure everything goes right. The Cobb character that Leonardo DiCaprio played, he’s like the artist and this guy’s like the producer. So, uh, I thought of my friend Jared, who is a theatre producer by day and he’s a very spiffy dresser.

And I was like, ‘No, I want tailored suits and I want to slick back my hair, I want this guy to seem like he’s meticulous, like he pays very close attention to detail.’”

Costume designer William Travilla originally created a gem-studded bikini for Marilyn Monroe to perform “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend" in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. However, facing fallout from some nude photographs Marilyn had taken as a struggling actress several years before, the studio nixed the risqué ensemble. Travilla quickly whipped up the now-iconic pink dress to replace it.

Walter Plunkett originally designed Scarlett’s dress for Ashley’s birthday party in the jade green color described by Margaret Mitchell in the novel. David O. Selznick wanted to emphasize Scarlett’s shame in the scene, and ordered the dress to be changed to red. With Mitchell’s permission, Plunkett redesigned the costume.
