Summer Cool Series

Dressed in a cool, yet smart combination, perfect for a day out on the coast or even for a trip in a yacht. This combo not only looks good for summer, it’s actually comfortable and keeps you cool for a sunny day - much like this one.

Notice how the trousers are way above my ankles? I opted for something different as a regular fit wouldn’t have done this outfit any justice. Plus wearing ankle length socks paired with a dress shoe wouldn’t have been “cool” in the heat.

URBAN ART x STYLE4GENTS

So recently I had the opportunity to do an interview and photoshoot for South African brand, Urban Art. It was an absolute pleasure for me to be part of this campaign as the aim was not only to increase brand awareness, but also to add genuine value to the lives of upcoming urban artists.

Urban Art is a symbol of self expression and individuality. I’ll be sharing some highlights from the shoot day.

DONE PLAYING This blog post is a little different from the rest. Here I'm basically sharing my story with you of how I really just took a look in the mirror and asked myself whether I'm really satisfied with this whole thing. When I say "whole thing", I'm talking about my blog as a whole - the photos I take, how I take them, how I look in them, but most importantly, what I'm wearing in them. The question I asked myself was "bro, are you really happy with the mediocre shit you post almost every day on Instagram? If you were someone else looking in from the outside, would you like the pictures you post because you actually like them? Would you consider yourself as one of the country's best dressed men?" Because that's who I want to be. I want to be that man who feels proud to be dressed well wherever he goes. To answer these questions truthfully, the only answer that comes to mind is a capital NO. I feel like I've become complacent in a way where posting shit from a photo shoot means that it looks good and people will like it, and not actually making an effort to look great. You understand what I'm saying? This is the reason why I launched this blog in the first place, plus to show fellow gentleman how things can be done differently from the wardrobe. Of course I'm not a role player when it comes to the fashion industry, but I feel like I have something to offer. I meet new people often, when I tell them about my blog and when they see my Instagram account, they say it looks really good, clean, and an all round quality page. I appreciate all those words, however inside my mind I'm like "shit, if only you knew how much potential I have, it just needs to be unleashed, this is nothing compared to what I can actually do." You know? So... Introspection is important and I feel like we all need to have these conversations with ourselves. Be it about your happiness, life, career, or even abilities to do greater. Style4Gents turned 2 years old this month, by the way. Time flies I tell you. It's been 2 years and I've basically been stagnant all this time lol. Imagine. Anyway, if you're reading this, I hope you're ready for the HEAT that's going to come your way as of this very moment. Cheers and Take Care.

PUMA x TRAPSTAR COLLECTION What's the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the name 'Trapstar'? Well, if you ask me, I'll say Quavo's single because that was one of my jams in 2016. TRAPSTAR, however, is a London based streetwear lifestyle clothing brand that believes that there is a star trapped within everyone. So basically this brand wants us to shine bright like the diamonds we are. The brand has collaborated with PUMA once again to bring us a unique approach to streetwear, with its new design to the sneakers as well as the parka jacket. The PUMA x TRAPSTAR Clyde Bold sneaker has a somewhat different design to the previous release which dropped in 2016. You'll notice that the speed stripes aren't as loud as the ones from last year. Also, the collaboration boasts a winter utility jacket, aka the parka jacket which also comes with a utility pants. The entire collection gives off that military feel. All you'll need to do now is stand at attention with a straight face and salute the commander in chief, which would be yourself, in the mirror.

PUMA x DAILY PAPER Daily Paper collaborates with PUMA to bring a fresh, funky and cool aesthetic to sportswear. To be perfectly honest, I thought Daily Paper was a brand from Durban - I can explain. On their shoe boxes, there's an emblem of what looks to be Zulu spears and a shield, which obviously made me believe it's a brand from KZN. Anyway, moving swiftly along - Daily Paper is a brand from Amsterdam, founded by three friends from Somali, Ghana and Morocco. The spears and shield I just told you about, are actually Masaai and not from the Zulu tribe of South Africa. The collection is inspired by Masaai cricketers in East Africa from back in the good old days. The designs ooze so much sauce as they are modern and artistic in style.

The Honolulu Bomber Jacket What's the first thing that came to mind as you laid eyes on this bomber? Is it the detail? The extra puffiness? The retro, classic vibe? Whatever it may be, all these details play a significant role in making this a definite hero piece. When I first saw it, I liked the retro look and vibe it gives off. It's much more puffier than the bomber jacket of today. It's even warmer, well, obviously. This can even be worn on a cold winter's evening to maintain some warmth in your body, unlike the lighter ones. That said, you can still pull off that street style appearance. The detail on the front as well as the back, gives it an extra edge, as it simply shows off more "personality" and also the colour isn't your conventional one for bomber jackets, which makes it even more of a classic.

The PUMA TRAPSTAR TRAPSTAR, the London based fashion label boasts a new collaboration with PUMA - PUMA x TRAPSTAR. Similar to the Suede Classic, this design comes in single colour ways - red and black. Forged from underground subculture, this London based lifestyle brand and its founders take influence from iconic modern art. Transcending the ethos of the brand through designs that follow not only just trends, but true inspiration. TRAPSTAR joins with Select this season to remix their vision of streetwear iconic silhouettes. Bold red hues, subtly contrasting details, and athletic elements update familiar designs, including the Disc, while giving an edge to fresh apparel. - PUMA SELECT

The AAA Tee Basically a long line tee, designed for a baggy fit, the only thing on your mind when donning this tee is comfort and freedom. Freedom to move as freely as you possibly can, without compromising comfortability. This particular colour (nude), can be worn with almost everything, as it's a neutral colour which compliments other colours you wear it with. Envision nude with white, nude with pink, nude with nude, or even nude with brown. Those are winning combinations right there. Here, I've coupled it with a pair of blue skinny jeans and a black low cut, flat sole sneaker. Now this tee, I think, is best worn draped over the shoulders and not being cuffed by the sleeves. Of course you might beg to differ, but you know that they say: "different strokes for different folks". Take it easy, gents.

The Bomber Jacket Since it's now officially Spring, the temperature will get higher and the weather will be all the more sweeter. Embracing the sun and the clear blue skies will always be best done from this time of the year. That said, what better way to embrace that weather than doing so with the TOPMAN bomber jacket. It's light, can keep you warm for those cool, chilly nights, and it just about goes with anything you pair it with. Picture this: the bomber with a plain white tee, light blue skinny jeans and a white pair of sneakers - or; the bomber with a nude tee, white skinny jeans and a tan Chelsea boot. See what I mean? You win! All in all, this jacket is one for the books. You could wear it all by itself and still cause havoc and make a killing - in a positive way of course.

Dressing Down The Suit In this day and age, we dress, we dress up and we dress down. In today's post I'll be talking about dressing down your suit. In other words, looking effortlessly dapper with a touch of casual. It's important to know how to dress for certain occasions. It's even more important to know how to fit in while standing out. Feel me? Let's take for example Fashion Week, the country's most prestigious and most anticipated fashion event. It's a three-day long event with numerous designers showing off their creations. On the first day of the event, 80% of the gents are dressed in suits, and you'll find that some gents dress in suits for the entire duration of the event - two thumbs up. For the versatile gentleman, switching things up is natural. The first day you might rock up in a suit, and the next day, a casual jacket and a pair of sneakers. For some, wearing a suit doesn't necessarily mean wearing a shirt and tie with it. You can dress it down by wearing a plain white tee underneath with a white pair of sneakers, or even a formal pair of shoes, just for control. Knowing how to wear a suit in different ways is a major key to showing your versatility and also knowing when to dress it down, as you can't dress it down for a "black tie" event, now can you??

The men's overcoat and trench coat. You probably want to be taken seriously, get good service at a restaurant, and make a good first impression when you meet a business partner. When it's cold outside, the only acceptable outerwear with a suit is an overcoat. Overcoats are essential when dressing up (in a suit, or anything presentable) to overcome the cold in the winter months. Firstly, do we all know the difference between a coat, a trench coat, and an overcoat? A coat is a coat, because it's a coat, so basically whatever is seen as a coat, is a coat, get me? Good. Then, gentleman, we go into detail - because we're specific like that. Firstly, we have the overcoat, which is a coat of course, single breasted with a variation of two to three buttons. It comes with a notch lapel and two side pockets. It's made of wool and it (obviously) keeps you warm. Now this can be worn with a plain white tee and a pair of light blue jeans, or you can throw it over your shoulders to compliment that slim fit suit. On the other hand, we have a trench coat. Double breasted, has a peak lapel, and also has a detachable waist belt. The fabric isn't the same as the overcoat, because it doesn't keep you as warm. However, the advantage is that you can button it up right up until above your sternum. So that, gents, is the "coat" in detail.

The Topman dress boots Simple and effective, these boots will get you looking the part whether you're attending a formal suit and tie event, or whether you're simply strolling through the city in your black skinny jeans and (beige) coat. No zip, no laces. You simply slide your feet inside and enjoy the comfort. Might I add, the quality of these boots is up there. Your toes wont feel like they've run out of breathing space, your ankles won't feel like they're grinding against the back of the boot in a bid for comfort. Topman has really become a force to be reckoned with when it comes to their formal wear. All in all, I'd recommend these boots any day if you're looking for a pair to complete your outfit.
