Dark Progressivism: The Built Environment -11/11 - 1/14 - MOAH
Art from the street gets into galleries and museums because it is now recognized as an actual movement.
(Jason Hernandez)
Based on the award-winning documentary, Dark Progressivism, written and directed by curator Rodrigo Ribera d’Ebre, this exhibition features some of the artists in the film as well as a survey of other local artists that have reconciled with the built environment through their artwork.Says d’Ebre,
“The exhibition reflects the economic/socio-political recovery of Southern California, a metaphor for the 20th century social ills that we are overcoming, and the nuances and history of development that inform such practices.”
The paintings in Dark Progressivism: The Built Environment range from abstract to graffiti to narrative surrealism, while the sculptures include ceramic and neon. Photographs showing both historic and contemporary landscapes and events give a documentary context.Curator Lisa Derrick comments,
“The artists selected for Dark Progressivism: The Built Environment express the multi-faceted aspects of the Southland, revealing our region’s truths and beauty in a bold and uncompromising fashion.”
Some of the artists participated in gangs, while others came from more traditional art backgrounds, and still others moved onto to art school from street background. The focus of the exhibition is the impact the manmade landscape has had on the residents of Southern California: housing projects, commercial developments, freeways, the Los Angeles River and the Metro system.
New art created for the exhibition by Big Sleeps, Sandow Birk, Jason Herndandez, Carlos Ramirez, Rafael Reyes, Alex Schaefer, plus an installation by Prime based on a short story by d”Ebre, and exterior mural by Fishe & Dr Eye.Women in show: Susan Logoreci, Eva Malhotra, Sandy Rodriquez, and Shizu Saldamando.

Ice Runes and Resin Skulls | A Maker of Primitive Witchery
Loren Morris, a rune maker and artisan, sells a range of items in her Etsy shop, Primitive Witchery. Working primarily with clay, resin, primitive decor and magical items, Loren provides a multitude of times including four types of runes made from resin and preserved natural items. The process includes layering resin and takes a few days to finish due to this. Each set of runes come with a hand painted burlap bag featuring Yggdrasil, the World Tree. She has plans for an even larger variety of runes in the future.
The ice runes are newer in her shop but are quickly becoming a customer favorite. The four kinds are the Alfheimer runes, the Tears of Freyja runes, the Nidhoggr runes, and the Ulfhednar runes.
The Alfheimer runes feature mossy bark inside. They are named after the realm of Light Elves in Norse mythology.
The Tears of Freyja runes features gold flecks. Freyja is known as a goddess of war and beauty in Norse mythology. When she searched for her husband, she is said to have cried tears of gold.
The Nidhoggr runes feature snake skin. They are named after the dragon that gnaws continuously on the roots of the Yggdrasil.
The Ulfhednar runes feature wolf hair. The Ulfhednar were shamanic warriors. They were like the berserkers, except they donned a wolf skin, instead of bear skin.
The ice runes aren’t the only popular item in her shop, either.
“Another popular item in my shop are the dragon teeth items. I created a dragon tooth from clay, made a mold of it and from that I create resin dragon teeth. I age the teeth using inks and I burn a dragon rune on them. I was given permission by Isedore Goldwings, the creator of dragon runes, to include them on my dragon teeth. I think they runes give the teeth a unique touch. Currently I make dragon teeth necklaces and captured dragon jars. I use inks on the jars to create a burned look, as if the dragon is trying to burn it’s way out of the jar.”
The dragons aren’t the only mythical creature magically trapped in her decorative jars, though.
“I also make captured fairy jars, these have been and are one of the more popular items in my shop. I offer them with glitter and moss or in a primitive look with rusty stars and smelling of cinnamon.”
She also offers a variety of magical items, including wax poppets filled with herbs for specific needs, primitive decorated besoms, and scrying mirrors.
My personal favorites, though, are her resin skulls that feature glitter, roses, moss and lichen, or just plain resin.
She’s kind of famous, too, in some circles.
“The Black Phillip art that I have created has been a favorite and the Black Phillip statue that I made was featured by the film company of “The Witch,” A24 Films; https://a24films.com/notes/2017/07/black-phillip-is-an-etsy-king”
You can shop Loren’s amazing artifacts on her Etsy and don’t forget to like her Facebook page for updates on her latest creations.

Blackthorn Hoodoo Blends:
Natural Teas for a Supernatural Life.
BHB is the brainchild of Amy Blackthorn. Four years ago Amy was leaving a highly stressful job in the security field and needed to clear away the old to make room for a new job. She got to work in her kitchen, pulled out some VanVan oil and a candle along with her other accoutrements. She anointed the candle when the doorbell rang. When she came back into the room all she could smell was the lemongrass used in the oil.
"I wish I had a tea with the same lemongrass, and ginger of the oil so I could meditate on this while the candle burns."
