“I would describe it as alert lite. I don’t have to be as alert as you would have to be, besides, most of the time you got it under control. I don’t need to be so alert when you’re already so good at doing it.” Aspen responded, although even if she had known he had it under control in any fight, she would still be watching. Aspen wouldn’t let him go in it dark. 

“Most of the time being the key part of that sentence,” Tristan said though even that was pushing it. Sometimes. Occasionally. Those words were more likely to fit control, “I’m not the alert one, Aspen. That is definitely not how anyone except you describes me.”

As Tristan spiralled, Kennedy listened, when he ended, she kissed him, in hopes of calming his anxiety. When she broke she stayed close. “You will know your limits,” she said. “It just takes longer for some than others. You are made to be a hero, you have a hero’s heart, Tristan.”

The kiss had interrupted his thoughts, stopped them dead in their tracks. It was something that few people had been able to do. Even when he acted like he was reassured, sometimes he was only pretending but he wasn’t with her. Instead of nodding and saying okay though, he said something else entirely, “I love you, Kennedy,” He didn’t know if it was the right time to say it. Was there a right time? He didn’t care. He felt it so he said it. He needed to stop overthinking things.

“Somehow they always do,” Tristan said, nodding, “But thanks anyway. For the offer.”

Kennedy put her hands to Tristan’s cheeks. “Listen, you know more than anyone about my issues with my powers and how it hurt Jack. When you let that out of your mind, you’ll calm down when using them, it’ll give you more control. You can’t obsess over what can happen, it’ll just send you into a spiral. You are the only one who knows your limits, you just have to listen and to control that before you control your powers.”

“But I don’t,” Tristan said, “I don’t know my limits. I have no idea what I’m capable of until it goes too far. That’s what happened with Aspen. I could think I know my limits and then I push it just a smidge too far and hurt someone and it’ll be someone I’m meant to be protecting, an innocent bystander or someone I love. And if I can’t know my limits or control myself, what am I even doing here? Why did they even let me on this programme? They should have given my spot to someone else.”

“I’m beginning to think you are a masochist given the fact you appear to want me to hurt you, Tristan.” Maya warned, resisting the urge to push him off his bike.

“Nah you would never hurt me. You like me too much,” Tristan said, “Or maybe I just like winding you up. It’s not like it’s not the same vice versa.”

“Isn’t it some kind of hero rule? You know when you’re fighting you have to always be alert and on top of everything?” 

“And isn’t it also some kind of rule when working in communications?” Tristan shot back, “To be the alert one. So really, we’re all meant to be.”

Arden bowed her head and shrugged. “I don’t know. I was scared that you wouldn’t understand or something. I don’t know.”

“Hey...” Tristan said, moving to place his hands on his sister’s shoulders, “You should know by now that the only thing that concerns me is that you’re happy and healthy. Who you love isn’t a big deal to me as long as they’re good to you. Okay?” He paused and chuckled, “Also technically speaking, I’m the only one of our siblings that definitely knows what it’s like to love girls,” He joked.

A snort left Maya and she sighed looking at Tristan almost fondly. “That’s ridiculous and you know it but yes, most, if not all of my ideas are good. It’s why I’m the best at what I do. It’s other areas I struggle with.”

“Did you just admit to having faults?” Tristan asked in mock shock, “Who are you and what have you done with Maya?”

“Thank you,” Nora said, crossing her arms. “You don’t seem very in control of that,” she pointed towards his fingers, “And for someone with fire powers, you should be very in control.”

“Uh yeah, I think I know that for myself thank you very much,” Tristan didn’t mean to sound so venemous but the pressure of his abilities was something he was very aware of and struggled with, “The flame was barely bigger than a penny and it was nowhere near your jacket, what is there to freak out about?” His anger was redirected onto the other in a way he was sure he would regret.

“Alright, as long as you are sure. I’m around if you wanna chat though.” Theo offered.

“I appreciate that, Theo. Thanks,” Tristan said, “I’m gonna get coffee. Do you want some?”

“Don’t be ridiculous, you can’t be something you were born as.” Aspen replied, speaking as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. “Isn’t it kinda mandatory to be a hero?” 

“Mandatory? Why would it be mandatory?”

“Come on, of course you were meant to be a hero. You just need some more training, especially with your powers. Which can happen, especially now that I’m training to be a combat trainer,” she said, with a smile when she told him. “That of which is specializing with training with people’s powers. Good thing too, because I’m fireproof.”

“And what happens if I hurt someone?” Tristan had almost said when instead of if. He was so sure it would happen. But he didn’t want to worry her. He knew what she would have said if he said when.

“That’s alright, I am a firm believer of not asking people to talk about things they don’t want to,I know how annoying it is when people keep pestering you.”

Tristan laughed, “Yeah, I’ve got sisters and a girlfriend for that. No doubt I’ll be telling them.”

“I uh, probably,” Arden started, to try and tell her brother. She knew he’d be fine with it, but part of her was still scared. “I like girls?” 

“Oh,” Tristan said, “So what you’re saying is I have to worry about a girl breaking your heart?” He asked, smiling in a reassuring manner, “How come you never told me before?”

“A little,” Sloane replied. “You kind of wear your problems all over your face. Especially in your eyes.”

“Maybe I should start wearing sunglasses,” Tristan said, trying to make a joke, “Just another incident in training but I’m working through it.”

Sawyer has always been on the edge of breaking, for years she had been back and forth from a breaking point. Sawyer put a hand to his chin, looking him in the eyes. “Look me in the eyes and tell me you’re not distracted.”

Tristan laughed and then looked her in the eyes as he swatted her hand away, “I’m not distracted.”
