"who do you self insert as when you read?"
This is me when I read:
Rant about yanderes because I Have an Opinion and I Cannot Keep It to Myself.
Ever since I've become more active on this app in the past few weeks than I have been before, I've noticed a new pattern when it comes to writing yandere characters. To preface, I know that this archetype is more versatile than it has ever been in recent years within the realm of x reader fanfiction but one particular new trait seems to have caught a lot of writers' eyes as of late: infidelity.
"But Grape, it's a yandere! They're supposed to be morally corrupt and devoid of any true empathy for others!" I KNOW!
Yes, a yandere is supposed to be this antagonistic manic version of a love interest with no morals or values but the way I see it, if the entire character's archetype is built off of obsession and control over the reader then maybe we should stick to focusing on the *"romantic" aspect of the dynamic between the yandere and the reader???? *Please understand that I use "romantic" very lightly here, I'm getting to my point I promise. And yes, I understand that there are several different ways that authors have used infidelity in yandere x reader pieces; using it as a manipulation tactic or some sort of threat to keep the reader under their control is always a strategy that I actually quite like to establish or solidify a yandere's morally corrupted personality. Where I draw the line, however, is when the "romantic" element starts to wear from the fic because if I'm being honest I read this fucked up genre as a guilty pleasure. I'm fairly sure most people on this app do too and I can guarantee you it's because we all love that demented little jolts in our chests whenever the thought of being loved to the point of madness crosses our minds. I mention this because it's the ENTIRE point of the genre in yandere x reader spaces. Whenever I see these fics where the yandere is actively seeking out another partner and just keeping the reader around for the sake of having someone to abuse as opposed to the initial concept of a twisted infatuation that has progressed and escalated through a well-crafted storyline...then I feel like I'm reading an attempt at literary gore p*rn.
To me, that isn't a yandere anymore it just feels like I've order a burger with lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, mayonnaise and a patty, but the waiter forgot my favourite part of the damn burger: my god damn tomatoes. I love tomatoes in my burgers the way I like my twisted romance in my yandere fics, otherwise I'm never going to enjoy my meal. Honestly though maybe I'm looking at this from a very biased point of view. I mean I can honestly see this particular cheating scenario working with other fanfictions such as character x character but not with a reader insert. I have no idea how biased I am about this but I'm really curious to understand other people's takes on this.
