Welcome to the developer blog for Subgrubs and Snazzards, an Alternian Roleplaying Game. SnS is in its 6th edition, with development on its 7th edition currently underway. SnS6e has been developed as the home ttrpg of Serverstuck, a homestuck Slice-Of-Life roleplay server.
What is 'Subgrubs and Snazzards' and why are there 6 of them?
Art by Ambrosia, Volunteer SnS Artist
The Short Version: Subgrubs and Snazzards (SnS) 6th edition is an independent Tabletop Roleplaying Game (TTRPG) set in the universe of the webcomic Homestuck and videogame Hiveswap. Specifically, SnS is designed to focus on Hiveswap's main setting: the planet Alternia and the Alternian Empire. In Subgrubs and Snazzards you play as a Troll, a grey skinned alien with candy corn horns living in a Sci-Fi fascist empire with a biological caste structure based on their different blood colours. SnS was made for @serverstuck, an Alternian Slice-Of-Life roleplay server that also serves as the home base for SnS development and its uses both for the server's west marches-style play and campaigns at home.
Want to check it out just based off that description already? By all means! >>Click Here<< for the 6th edition game manual in the form of a live document.
The Long Version: You're... going to want to sit down for this.
A PROJECT 8+ YEARS IN THE MAKING
Serverstuck was made in 2018, and the desire for a TTRPG followed close behind. The earliest "editions" of this TTRPG were rough drafts of basic systems and hacks of popular existing games, but it was snowballing rapidly into a thing entirely its own. In 2020, the combined hacks and innovations of Serverstuck were coalesced into Subgrubs and Snazzards, 4th Edition, a game that set itself apart from others by focusing exclusively on Alternia with a no-sburb aproach more similar to Hiveswap. SnS has only continued to grow since then, with two complete editions released and countless overhauls and updates between them.
Currently, overhauls on SnS6e are on pause for a very special reason: the development team is worrking on Subgrubs and Snazzards, 7th Edition, which will act as the culmination of several years' work. Some details are available on Serverstuck, and others will be released her over time (but more on that another day).
A CUSTOM TTRPG SYSTEM
Taking inspiration from everything on a scale of Pathfinder to Monster of The Week, Subgrubs and Snazzards has developed a unique TTRPG system. Use 8 stats and a set of 8-Sided dice (thanks, Vriska!) to engage with the world, use your moves, and explore all the canon, fanon, and SnS-original options that the game has to offer. Try out the VALUE POINTS inventory system to fill your SYLLADEX with junk that might be useful. Use UNIVERSAL MOVES to do things like SWASHBUCKLE in your foes' faces, get creative with a bit of PROBLEM SLEUTHING, and channel your destiny in a cosmic FRAYMOTIF. Battle against monsters while using ABSTRATA UPGRADES that let you trade raw damage for using abilities like EMOTIONS or STATUS EFFECTS. Build out your character with COUNTLESS MOVES custom fitted to you!
But wait, what moves can you even take?
DOZENS OF CHARACTER OPTIONS
Over a THOUSAND moves spread out across all sorts of options that let you build a completely unique alien experience, including:
CHARACTER ARCHETYPES designed to reflect the lives and experiences of the planet Alternia, coming from a mix of Homestuck/Hiveswap canon and unique SnS worldbuilding, including mandatory caste-focused playbooks called TREES (with canon classics like LEGISLACERATOR teals and MASTERMIND ceruleans as well as homemade favorites like NETWORK golds and PALADIN indigos, alongside a playable setting-specific lime and fankid castes) and optional add-ons called TEMPLATES that cover everything from seafaring RAPSCALLIONEERS and unlicensed DOCTERRORS to shambling-corpse SHADOWDROPPERS and star-channeling ASTROSORCERERS.
A massive selection of moves representing the key components of your CLASSPECT, with mechanics to represent what your Class, Aspect, and Lunar Sway say about you and how your destiny shapes the way you interact with the world.
Countless extra options options to represent special cases, such as common MUTATIONS in the troll species like wings or mutant eyes, the vast selection of ADULT JOBS that graduation has to offer from corpse-shoveling rusts to planet-ruling violets, and even mechanical boons you get from being with your QUADRANT mates and growing your relationship over time.
A ever-growing list of PERFECTLY GENERIC MOVES to cover edge cases from being an empire stan to having a secret identity.
COUNTLESS OPTIONS TO FLESH OUT ALTERNIA
While the character options are robust and extremely fleshed out, they'd be nothing without something to use them against. In Subgrubs and Snazzards you can fight against the countless MONSTERS that Alternia has to offer, from LUSII like the lvl 2 PARASOCIAPUS that steals your custodian to the mighty lvl 4 SNAZZARD that enacts divine justice as it sees fit. If the fauna of Alternia isn't your cup of tea, try boiling a few leaves off its native PLANTS like the lvl 1 SPEARSLAUGHTER PLANT that snare unsuspecting adventurers in their vines, or struggle against your own mind as the lvl 3 MEMORIVORA PETALS slowly saps away all your experiences and abilities. Struggle against the united Imperial forces as NPCS like the lvl 2 BUSTIN' LAUGHSASSIN and ORPHANER LUSUS-RUNNER team up with ROBOTS from the prowling lvl 1 H3M0H0UND to the titanic lvl 4 IMPERIAL SHOCKDRONE. When the natural and unnatural isnt enough, ENTITIES together make up the supernatural- like the lvl 2 AMBIENT GRIMDARKS that wander the world after making a bad deal with the horrorterrors, or like the lvl 4 CELESTIAL GRUB that are insectoid angels summonable to those of cloistered jade faith.
If monster battles by themselves aren't your thing, a whole host of systems describe the nature of the world around you, like HABITATS that describe anything from mountains and oceans to jungles and wastelands. HAZARDS describe what happen when the world around you fights back, and those can be something as small as a RAINSTORM or TOXIC GAS leak to as major as DIMMING STARS in the wake of the supernatural to DAYLIGHT breaking out and burning indiscriminately. Rounding out the mechanics of Alternia are AFFLICTIONS that can cause issues for your characters over time, be it less intense like with DROWNING and THE SNIFFLES, or more severe like with a case of HAUNTING or CARCINIZATION.
INTEGRATED SERVER MECHANICS AND FEATURES
While Subgrubs and Snazzards is developed as a TTRPG that can be used stand-alone with little modification (which has been done before, including on podcast Dice Will Roll), it has been uniquely integrated into Serverstuck and vis versa. Because of this, there's dozens of Serverstuck-Exclusive TTRPG features, including:
A thriving Player-Vs-Player economy
Server support for single encounters against monsters as well as one-shot length Adventures In Alternia (or AiAs) that equate to server levels
Semi-Regular server events with unique event mechanics ranging from minigames and prize items to raidbosses.
Dedicated channels for planning, developing, and creating new builds and ideas for both players and game masters.
On-Site access to the development team for SnS support, both on server and off.
An ever-growing list of mechanics that are introduced first to the server before making their way to the game proper.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Subgrubs and Snazzards is a unique ttrpg experience set in the planet of Alternia that blends longstanding canon, community fanon, and dev team original concepts together to a unique and in-depth roleplay experience. There are countless options for both players and game-masters to use, all designed with love of the original canon and the new stories being told every day. Whether its in Serverstuck's westmarches style play or a campaign all of your own, SnS hopes to provide an enjoyable and replayable game that lets YOU tell the stories you want to about a relatively small part of an old webcomic.

Hello! I just wanted to know, for a session with friends who don't know much about homestuck (if any), how much homestuck knowledge would they need to have so that they can play SnS?
Depending on how it's introduced, they might not need any previous knowledge!
The Pathfinder2e actual-play podcast Dice Will Roll (run by Serverstuck Owners and Moderators!) ran a 4/13 special one-shot using Subgrubs and Snazzards, 6th Edition. While all the players involved were familiar with Homestuck, Trolls, and Alternia, the DWR crew had to face a very real possibility: there was no guarantee that their listeners were familiar and, even if they were, they remembered how Alternia worked. The one-shot's Clouder (an SnS term for Game Master), Serverstuck co-owner Dave, wrote an excellent introduction to the setting of Alternia that I'll be including at the end of this post in case you want to reference it for your own sessions.
I think the biggest idea here is that you wouldn't want to treat it like a "Homestuck TTRPG," because technically it's not. Technically, it's an Alternian TTRPG, which matters for a distinct reason: it's focused more on the setting and worldbuilding than the events and lore of the webcomic. Because of this, you can treat this like any other TTRPG that has a distinct, defined setting built in to the game mechanics, meaning you would be taking the role of educator and introducing them to the world of Alternia, the Empire, and the species of Trollkind.
Of course, having some knowledge wouldn't hurt at all. Introducing them to some basic things for the setting like the stuff found in Hiveswap wouldn't hurt to do. In general, outlining a few key details (the caste system, the Empire, psionics and magic, biotech, ultraviolence) can go a long way in introducing the setting to others, but be prepared to ask questions. Additionally, it wouldn't hurt at all to come up with your own lore and worldbuilding on the spot (even if it isn't the most lore-accurate to Canon Alternia) to make it playable for you all and your session. Grub knows we have. Having a dedicated Session 0 just for learning the world and bouncing ideas around is definitely something that can acclimate everyone to the world of Subgrubs and Snazzards.
The introduction to the world of Alternia as written by Dave for Dice Will Roll under the cut
The planet Alternia might seem like any other planet. Full of life. Verdant, filled with plants, animals, and a sapient species of insectoid humanoids called Trolls. What are trolls like, you may wonder? They look not too dissimilar to humans, bipedal, with two arms. Their biggest differences are their grey skin color, candy corn colored horns, and the range of blood colors, from Rusty Burgundy, to Royal Fuchsia. They live in a dystopia, where Rustbloods are the lowest of the low, poor with very few opportunities, climbing up from warm colors to the cool colors of seadwellers, Violets and two Fuchsias, one of whom rules across the galaxy, and her heiress, young and clueless to anything except her easy, extravagant life. Trolls are strong, resilient creatures, who have found joy in their lives even with the stressful society they are hatched into. And one city is more eventful than others, on this planet, where the young trolls reside.
The camera pans across Gulchscourge City. The sky is a beautiful shade of purple and pink mixing together like watercolor, soft clouds keeping the area cool. Two moons shine in the sky, pink and green, bringing light to the people below. The city’s buildings are strange and alien, built like an insect might build a city of hives, perhaps. And the aliens who live in said city might resemble insects, busy bees or ants running about, living their lives. There are millions of them, so very many that you would lose count in a moment, if you lost focus. There is much to do in Gulchscourge City, and the nighttime (the only time of day safe to leave the house due to the unrelenting light of the sun) is full of business and play.
The camera zooms in on a few trolls, our heroes for the day, just for a moment, and then flies away. This little camera drone-bird sees nothing amiss, and there is no need to take action. Maybe later, it will find a mutant to report for culling.

Session anon here, i forgot to ask this as well. What kind of adventures/story would be recommended for beginners to the system?
^ Part 2 of the ask, I'll go ahead and reblog it with more information under (another) cut to prevent this post from being wayyyy too long on your dash
While there's no strict rules on what kind of adventures or stories would be good in any situation, you're probably going to want to stick to something Plain-Jane Alternian for newcomers to the system (so probably no Horrorterror Encounters or tangling with Deepspace Aliens just yet) at least in my opinion. For those who know the setting at least, it gives them a way to connect the game mechanics to existing information and their personal knowledge, while wholly new people get to learn the baseline of what the game world experience is like before being thrust into the Weirdness that Alternia (and, more specifically, SnS' version of Alternia) has to offer.
For this, centering something like monsters (particularly Lusus and Robot monster encounters) does well, as well as the idea of taking something benign or boring from normal life and turning it into its absurd, over-the-top, overtly dangerous Alternian Counterpart doesn't hurt either. Hiveswap Act 2 showed us just how much drama and mess can be incurred by something as simple as a train ride, after all.
Of course, there's also the sorts of things that come up with writing any introductory adventure, like whether to use a Team-Oriented Approach to give everyone a framework or let everyone Make Their Own Thing and put them together by circumstance/an outside force. There's benifits to either of these: the team approach gives people a core from the world to build off of, while everyone making their own thing lets them explore different setting parts and use them as desired. Ultimately, when it comes to things like that, it's up to you and your table to decide what works best for you all.
The Dice Will Roll episode attached in the first part of this post actualy does a perfect example of using plain and simple Alternia to create a good introduction to the setting as a whole, set on the backdrop of the metropolitan Gulchscourge City and everything it has to offer. I can even break down how the adventure works well as an introduction, so I might do that later if people ask (or if the mood strikes me). People who are more experienced with the system (especially running SnS6e for others) are welcome to drop their beginner story/adventure ideas in replies or reblogs, and I'm sure that the people over in Serverstuck wouldn't mind helping out either!

Does completing a tree (In order to unlock the Ultra) mean having all moves of that tree unlocked? And if so, does using the Bard class to gain aspect moves of two opposing aspects lock you out of getting either Ultra?
Generally yes, completion does mean having all moves of that tree unlocked. This is mainly used for "more important" templates like the eeries and magic templates.
For classes and aspects in particular, though, the semi-official Serverstuck Ruling is that you do not need every single move from your aspect in order to get the aspect ultra. For the purposes of Serverstuck, you only need 10 moves from a combination of your class and aspect in order to gain your aspect's [Ultra] move, which also applies to your class' [Ultra] move!
If you're playing with SnS 6e offserver, you can change how the Aspect Ultra completion works as you see fit. The general idea there was just to reflect how classes and aspects both contribute to your character Becoming Their Archetype, but asking someone to take a whopping 13 moves to make that happen is. A Lot.
For the BARD class in particular, the moves they take from their opposite aspect do not contribute to their aspectal ultra! The Bard class as a whole is oriented towards gambling, risk-taking, and pushing limits until you push too far. Their ability to steal from the opposite aspect reflects this:
Additionally, you can’t unlock the opposite [Aspect] [Ultra] like this and [Aspect] moves of your opposite [Aspect] do not count towards your completion for your true [Aspect] [Ultra], you silly billy.
- from the Bard [Unlock] move, TRAGICOMIC MASK
How far are you willing to neglect your own aspect before you lose sight of it entirely? They're still deeply rooted in their original aspect, but it is up to each bard whether they learn to work within their aspect or reject it entirely.

I have been meaning to say this for an actual calendar week but ASKS ARE OPEN!!
The ADHD ghouls have been getting to me real bad in the post-semester haze but I still want to keep this blog (relatively) active. We might even try some sort of ask game to show people parts of how the TTRPG works if y'all seem interested... Til then, if you have any questions on the system, want to share comments, have some fun tidbits or anything like that, send us an ask!

P.S. if you're confused on what I mean by TTRPG or want to figure out what exactly Subgrubs and Snazzards is, check out this post for more info!
Finals season is now OVER (for some of us at least) and I'm tinkering away at the next major post for Extra Cullriculars and You, as well as some concepts for other Game Mechanics post series things and other stuff that would be fun or interesting to do on the Subgrubs and Snazzards TTRPG blog here. TRUST I'm working on the next big things for this place and I'm definitely excited for what we've got coming out.
Without saying too much about what I'm thinking, I think it's worth noting that just about everyone is a fan of an interesting monster.
- Witch, Lead Developer for Subgrubs and Snazzards and Serverstuck
Our first series on the @subgrubs-and-snazzards official development blog will be covering the EXTRA CULLRICULARS, which are kind of like after school clubs for fascist alien empires. While we'll get into the specifics of what extra cullriculars are available to the trolls of Alternia later on, here we're going to cover the basics of what they are and how they work in Subgrubs and Snazzards, 7th Edition. If you're wondering on what any of this means, this post here gives an overview of what Subgrubs and Snazzards is and how it's used for both homestuck roleplay and as an independent TTRPG.
Without further ado, let's get into it!
WHAT IS AN EXTRA CULLRICULAR
To keep it simple, Extra Cullriculars are the social backbone of Alternian Society. Of course, there's big shadowy government agencies and shadier government agents to carry out the specifics of The Empire's will, but those are so detached from the Day-To-Day of Alternian Life (or, at least, so trolls think). Sure, everyone knows the Heresy Eradication Taskforce controls the media, and everyone obviously knows the Commissary of Interplanetary Security monitors everybody's online activity, and everyone of course knows the Trolls In Teal erase things from polite memory that the average citizen can't (or isn't allowed to) handle- but those are big, lofty jobs with hard-earned positions and extensive workloads. Extra Cullriculars are more volunteer based, community-oriented approaches to comically evil governments. Join in at your local cullmunity center, build relationships with other trolls across the hemospectrum, and do your part to keep your little slice of the empire safe and secure.
Within the context of Subgrubs and Snazzards, 7th edition, Extra Cullriculars are all templates, meaning they're optional add-on archetypes/playbooks available to your character to expand what moves and roleplay potential you have available. All Extra Curriculars are open to all castes (that are legal! No limes or earthlings in here) unlike their Imperial Colourguard governmental counterparts. There are currently slated to be three Extra Cullricular options available in 7e: the Bustin' Brigade, the Cullscouts of Alternia, and the Commusnitch Society. Each of these groups specialize in identifying and addressing the various Cullbait types of Alternia, but we'll get more into that at a later date. For now, let's talk about the foundation that they all have in common.
KEY FEATURE: EXTRA CULLRICULAR BADGE
While the Extra Cullriculars possess uniforms and regalia for all sorts of important events and official activities, there's one thing they should carry around on the day-to-day: the official Extra Cullricular Badge they keep as a proof of membership. This simple item takes up no inventory space and can be warn in combination with any other equipment items, though doing so immediately outs you as a member of the imperial community forces. Using your Extra Cullricular Badge might allow you access to unique locations, give you access to information pathways blocked off to other characters, or even impress other characters (or piss them off!)
Of course, it's your Extra Cullricular Badge that also gives you access to the [Imperial] tag mechanics as seen below.
KEY MECHANIC: THE [IMPERIAL] TAG
In SnS, the narrative and worldbuilding of Alternia is directly reflected in the mechanics- game rules like special abilities, unique interactions, and new character option pathways opening up, and Extra Cullriculars are no different. All move options that fall under the umbrella of Extra Cullricular have [Imperial] as a tag, which defines the nature of how those moves work and what they say about your character as follows:
[Imperial]
Glory to the empire! If you have a move with this tag, that means you actively support, aid, and uphold the empire and its interests. Maybe you serve as part of the prestigious Imperial Colourguard, or maybe it's because your Condilicious stan account is trending on chittr. Regardless, you are now an Imperial Troll. Non-DRONE monsters that are Imperial are not hostile to you unless given reason, though other monsters may immediately become hostile if you make your pro-imerial sentiment known. If you use a [Cullbait] move as an Imperial Troll, you immediately gain 1 [Drag].
Now, [Imperial] as a tag wouldn't only be showing up on moves from the Extra Cullricular templates. The same tag you gain as a community thought-spy or mutant-hunter is the one also gained by Federal Agents, government-created robots, and even the occasional recreational class traitor who takes a generic move without committing to a whole template. Other abilities, options, and features in turn might use your [Imperial] status to cause certain outcomes, especially when it comes to monster abilities or environmental effects. Whether this is better or worse for you is entirely up to debate, but it certainly makes things more interesting!
AND THAT'S ALL... FOR NOW...
Keep posted in the coming weeks as we dive more into the world of extra cullriculars, going through each one and highlighting the parts that we think makes those templates shine. Make sure that you follow this blog and keep an eye out for those posts as they come out.

Hey guys! If you're reading this, you're probably already a fan of subgrubs and snazzards (probably through @serverstuck) but wondering what this blog is or you've found this blog and are wondering what subgrubs and snazzards is.
I wrote a whole verbose overview of what sns is here, but I figured it would be a good idea to give a quick overview on what the whole thesis of this blog is for! Subgrubs and Snazzards has a lot going on behind the scenes-- between the constant innovations happening with event mechanics, the daily changes we're making to improve quality of life, and the massive amounts of overhauls being done to support SnS 7e, the big umbrella project with a million little projects housed within. I was the one who actually proposed the idea of a developer blog meant to highlight the things that we don't get to gush about as much as we'd like: spoilers on new mechanics, the developmental process behind new changes, even things that just haven't gotten to have the spotlight in a while!
The plan here is to have a series of of "article" posts covering all sorts of topics, though the main ones for the time being are going to be regulated leaks of in-development content for SnS 7e, including both mechanics written by our amazing developer team and art made by our fantastic artist team. The first planned series will be highlighting the Extra Cullriculars, imperial groups that Alternian citizens can participate in which help maintain the status quo.
Keep an eye out for those as they drop! It might be slow to start (finals season be upon college students of the world, woe) but I hope this is something that will continue long into the future!
Catch you on the next post!
