hold on, I'm thinking about the development of Flint and Silver’s relationship in S2, especially predicated on the fact that Silver knew Flint killed Gates and not only helped him hide it but assisted him in regaining the captaincy. Thinking about how that was where Flint began to trust him, but not just because of Gates. Everyone else that Flint ever truly trusted (Hennessy, Miranda, Thomas, Gates) were people with whom he had an intensely personal relationship with and love for, but who ultimately either betrayed him or cost him dearly for his having loved them. Trust then, it would seem, is an ill-fated affair for him, a sentiment Flint may have been considering now that he just killed his best friend. But here is Silver, someone who has no personal motive toward him, love for him (at this present moment), and who has told him on multiple occasions that he is just a means to an end as far as the gold goes. Does it not follow then, that at the very least, Flint can trust Silver to be predictable in that he is solely focused on money? Can't he trust him to not break his heart in the same way it's always been broken by the people he dared to love? Where everyone else saw a thief and a liar, someone untrustworthy, perhaps Flint saw safety - because his relationship at this point in time with Silver was anything but personal and required no vulnerability, no personal sacrifice. If Silver chose to betray him, it wouldn't hurt nearly as badly as it did with Gates ..... but if there's one thing we know about Flint, it's that its almost impossible for him to not put his whole heart and soul into something, to not let it matter more and more as he comes to understand it. By the time we reach the end of S3, Flint has laid his heart at Silver’s feet by entrusting him with the truth about Thomas, and by S4 - well that arm's length trust has faded into something deeper than a lover's embrace
