Good Things that Happened in 2016

·         We’re closer to having successful vaccines for lung and brain cancer.

·         New chemotherapy breakthroughs have increased the 5-year survival for pancreatic cancer from 16% to 27% (and is getting better)

·         Scientists figured out how to link robotic limbs with the part of the brain that deals with intent to move so people don’t have to think about how they will move the limb, it can just happen.

·         Child mortality is down everywhere and it keeps going down.

·         Thanks to the ice bucket challenge the gene responsible for ALS has been found, meaning we are closer to an effective treatment. Let me rephrase that: we are close to getting a treatment for a very bad disease because a lot of people (including really hot celebrities) got wet.

·         A solar powered plan circumnavigated the world.

·         Michael Jordan donates 2mil to try and help bridge connection between police and the community.

·         Tiger numbers are growing.

·         And manatees.

·         And pandas.

·         Pakistan has made strides toward outlawing honor killings.

·         70,000 Muslim clerics declared a fatwa against ISIS.

·         Pokemon Go players went insane with placing lure modules near hospitals for sick kids.

·         California is now powering over 6 million homes with solar power, a record in the US (and that is the tightest shit)

·         Volunteers in India planted 50 million trees in 24 hours.

·         Apparently world crime as a whole has drastically declined as a whole in the last couple of decades.

·         Coffee consumption has been proved to help curtail cancer and suicide rates.

·         We made massive strides in Alzheimers’ prevention (my grandmother literally told me that scares her more than getting cancer this is very good news)

·         The ozone layer is repairing itself and all the work we did to get rid of those aerosol chemicals was actually worth it.

·         A new therapy developed in Israel could cure radiation sickness.

·         The Anglican church resolved to solemnize same-sex unions the same as opposite-sex unions which required a super majority of all three orders of the church (lay, clergy, bishop).

·         Precision treatments for cancer are hitting clinical trials and WORKING (as someone who’s had relatives with cancer this is the best news)

·         Kubo and the Two Strings. Haven’t seen that yet as well but its Laika so I know it’s a masterpiece

·         Deadpool. The beautiful and super accurate R-rated marvel film

·         Captain America: Civil War. Seriously is the best marvel movie yet in my opinion I need more.

·         Zootopia. Oh don’t mind me I’m just a movie that tackled the issue of racism and not only game changed animated films but also made a billion dollars

·         The Hamilton Mixtape is coming out. Which is a bunch of artists singing songs from the musical (Sia, Usher, Regina Spketor, etc.) I’m excited.

·         A personal victory for myself, I joined Tumblr and met angels in blog form so…that’s uplifting.

·         And I met my favorite voice actor at a con which was a bucket list accomplishment.

“The Widowmaker is on board, take off!” The drop-ship's co-pilot shouted in his helmet’s radio, observing as the blue skinned assassin stepped on board, her heels clicking on the steel ramp as she spun around to marvel her work one last time. Unknown to the pilot, her face had unusually expressive smirk of satisfaction on it, the Widowmaker basking in the afterglow of the successful hit. For this brief period of time, she felt, and so strongly at that. It was this addictive, intoxicating sense of life coursing in her veins that made her so susceptible to the Organization. 

His com radio buzzing to life again, the co-pilot brought his hand to press on his helmet, listening in more precisely before stepping forth to address the marksman. “Ma’am, the commander is on the comm” He informed her, the french woman cocking a brow at him before nodding. Her mood somewhat soured by this interruption, the Widowmaker thrust her rifle in the mercenary’s hands, stepping up the ladders and entering into the cockpit of the dropship. 

Her golden colored eyes scanned the marvelous night sky that spread outside the cockpit’s windows and she allowed herself another small smile at the mere enjoyment of the scene before taking a seat on the co-pilot’s place, switching her helmet to the radio headset, woman’s eyes locking at the screen that was showing the pale mask of Talon’s Strike Commander. “What is it?” She asked with sour tone, her accent thick with annoyance. What little time she had left before her emotions would fall to slumber was growing thin by the seconds. “Is the omnic disposed of?” The raspy voice asked over the comm link, his inhumane voice echoing to her ears through the headphones. “He is dead. I never miss” the woman replied with a hint of cockiness, but well earned one. Save for few extremely extraordinary cases, she had a flawless record. 

"We picked up an increase in radio activity prior to the take down. What happened?” Reaper questioned, a hint of accusation in his voice. Overwatch or Talon, the man had always been nothing if not throughout in his operations and this had supposed to have been a simple case. “There was an inconvenience on the scene. I improvised a bit” Widowmaker replied smoothly, playing down the firefight but granting herself a small pang of satisfaction at outwitting the British agent. “Inconvenience?” The dark figure pressed on impatiently, refusing to let her off the hook. “What happened?” something in his tone told the sniper she’d better not play around anymore. Feeling the cold grip her heart slowly again, the woman sighed, feeling the null feeling return. “The ex operative from Overwatch. Lena Oxton. She was on the rally in full gear. I danced a bit with the little chéri”. 

A low growl vibrated in Widowmaker’s ears as Reaper considered this turn of events. “Full gear? Did she knew we were coming?” He questioned, obviously already considering a possible mole within Talon’s ranks. Caring little for the possible bloodshed within their own ranks, the sniper shrugged her shoulders. His attention returning to her, Reaper asked: “And what of that girl? You killed her?”. A smooth smile spread on the blue lips, Widowmaker tilting her head a bit and feeling this small shudder of feeling at what she was about to say, knowing how the man would take it. “No, I left her there, to witness my work” She felt a small pang of warmth inside herself at the memory of Tracer’s horrified expression as reality hit her, the sparkly brunette realizing how her dodging sniper’s bullet had in turn led to death of the omnic. 

And to add to that warmth, her ears were filled with the growling, angered howl of the Strike Commander as he tried to contain himself. “You could had snuffed that brat there and then! And you let her live!” Reaper raged, the small screen filled with the skull-like mask of the murderous commando. “I Thought you’d like to finish her off yourself” Widowmaker defended herself, the cool smile not leaving her face, the woman knowing it only fueled further the inferno within Reaper, and the danger in turn fueled her emotions. “Amélie!” the man shouted, using her old name. A warning sign if there ever was one. Then, his voice lowering in volume, dripping with venomous hate and wrath, Reaper carried on. “Do not try my patience... What Talon did to you before... I can have them improve on that work” He was unable to make out the effect on the Spider’s face, her ice cold expression a perfect defense, but deep within herself, the woman felt a small pang of dread at the threat. “We’ll return to this in your debriefing. Reaper out” Not waiting for her confirmation, the masked face disappeared form the screen. Staring on the screen a few more moments, the sniper finally pulled off the headset. Getting up without a word, she left the cockpit to tend to her rifle. Despite the tension just now, she knew that within minutes, the cold feeling void of emotions would soothe her. In the end, she’d not feel a thing.

This shit.

So Hunchback is far and away my favorite movie from Disney’s Renaissance, and it always makes me so happy that yes, people seem to appreciate it, people seem to love it, but I’mma go into exactly WHY it’s my favorite, and WHY I think it’s so crucial, and WHY I think it should be required viewing for young boys specifically.

We all know that a huge bulk of the media we’ve grown up with consistently has that one frustrating message:  Being the hero means you’ll get the girl.  Many boys let this mentality bleed into reality.  We have “nice guys,” who feel that their niceness entitles them to romance, when obviously that discredits a female’s personal choice.  We all get this, we all know this, and a lot of us get that it’s a toxic message.

So check out our hero.

He’s an incredibly good person who isn’t conventionally attractive.

Check out our lady.

Super good person, conventionally attractive.

The movie so deliberately builds up Quasi’s hopes.  There’s a whole fucking song about it.

But Esmeralda, who is her own person with her own motivations and preferences, chooses another man, who is also good and also attractive.

A lot of people criticize this aspect of the movie, the fact that Quasi doesn’t get the girl BECAUSE of his appearance.  But my argument?  This is the best damn message a movie could ever send.

Because when things get dicey, when Esmeralda’s life in in danger, when Quasi would be putting his own life on the line, he knows that romance is no longer within the realm of possibility.  He knows he won’t be “getting the girl.”  He knows this, and he allows himself a moment of bitterness, he risks falling prey to the “nice guy” trope, and he almost succumbs.

“She already has her knight in shining armor, and it’s not me.”

BUT THEN HE DOES THE RIGHT THING.

He has NO ulterior motive for saving her life.  NO ulterior motive for opposing the man who raised him.  And he doesn’t know that he’ll get any reward, he knows he could straight up get killed for his actions, and yet he still acts.

And there’s no bitterness. There’s still so, so much love between him and Esmeralda, pure awesome platonic love, and love between him and Phoebus, and just fucking love all around, it’s amazing.

I’ve heard so many people express distaste at Quasi not ending up with Esmerelda.  Like he was cheated out of some kind of reward.  But have they watched the ending?

Does that look like a man cheated of his reward?  Does he look like he “lost” to Phoebus?  No dude, that’s a man who has everything he ever wanted, and that’s also a man who didn’t “get the girl.”

If that’s not an essential message for young boys to hear, I don’t know what is.

The writers described HoND as a “Rolling Stones” ending: Quasimodo doesn’t get what he wants (Esmeralda’s love) but he gets what he needs (freedom from his abusive guardian and acceptance by the city in general).  And yes, that totally counts as a win for him.

I whole heartedly agree on the observations made in the post about the story and growth Quasimodo goes through as a character. However what DOES rub me the wrong way is this “I think it should be required viewing for young boys specifically”. The points about dealing with rejection, the bitterness and resentment are well placed, but then the writer decides that this story should rightly be used teach boys how life is not supposed to be fair, but they should do what is right regardless. 

WHY would you decide to single out young boys from the group? Is there some specific motive or sense that boys must come to understand that you should do what is right, regardless of wether you feel you have been “cheated on” regarding the assumed reward (in this example, the heroine of the movie). You see, when you pick  a group of people (or a gender with particular age)  that should especially pay attention to this detail, then you are blaming them for being more neglectful about, or more prone to acting in this manner.

Now, if the boys need to learn such an important lesson, so much so that their learning of the lesson is “specifically” desired, I assume the problems of this sort lay mostly on young males? Or with “nice guys” as suggested by writer of the post. Then what of girls? Do women tend to “take one for the team”, choosing to do the “right thing” even when they feel hurt, rejected and bitter? Is it so that women are more likely to swallow their pride and help their friend, even if this friend has just caused them pain? I ask anyone that feels it is so to step up and show my error to me, for I think there is no difference in how either gender reacts to rejection, hurt and bitterness. 

You’d have this movie’s message be used in gender politics. I have no doubt you mean no harm, but the argument of teaching the boys how to treat women remains as sexist as ever. Yes, I used the word even I feel uncomfortable uttering. But that’s what this reminds me of. An angle that serves one gender by “educating” the other (and please do not try pulling “but guys do treat women disrespectfully if something like this happens”. Yes, they do, and so do the girls if the situation is reversed). And we should not have those sides when it comes to education. We (in my opinion) should be giving all children as many angles as possible and let them define their personality with these all points and values weighing in the back.
