Subnautica as a horror game, but not because of the hungry creatures or crushing depth or darkness or vastness of the ocean planet.

Because of the deaths of everyone on that ship, people that Ryley knew and maybe some he liked or was friends with or cared about or talked to more than once. And then they're all just gone.

Because of the weight of being alone on a planet that is, while not evil, harsh and foreign. The weight of loneliness that only grows and builds as he listens to more and more audio logs, from people he couldn't save, who are already long dead, who don't even have bodies to bring home as a last dignity.

Because of the need to survive, the forced need to dig deeper and further down in himself, to keep going, to keep trying, to have to pull himself up from nothing and just try and not die, a risk that he's faced with constantly, and that he's well aware of.

Because of the fact that once it's over, he's just a disposable face in the crowd, a number to crunch, and then, he's made into an exploitable asset for Alterra's bottom line.

Because of the survivor's guilt. Because of the loss. Because of the isolation. Because of surviving something nobody else can ever understand or relate to, and then still being expendable.

Because of realising that he was likely, always expendable anyway.

Honestly, the complexity and variety in creature behaviour in these games really does draw you in and make the world feel alive, and beautiful in a way.

And from a purely technical/game dev standpoint, the programming for anything like this fascinates me to no end.
