A quick tour of my 2025 Halloween display led by Pixie, my neighbor's cat (audio on!):
This is a real video (no AI) and all props and decorations are handmade. Some work in progress photos can be seen in my previous post.
Also, a note on the seemingly agitated tail whipping: Pixie serendipitously crashed the shoot and was eager to explore, so I kept the camera rolling and let her do her thing. She wasn't coerced into performing; it was her choice to stay and hang out. She was very affectionate, purred the whole time, and eventually wandered home when she had her fill of excitement. She's just a vigorous tail wagger. And a bit saucy.
My '24 Halloween decorations (still working on this year's props so no pics yet). I make everything by hand in my creepy-ass dungeon basement where there's just enough clearance to stand upright, and an absolutely thriving population of hideous spiders (New England, old house, iykyk).
These tombstones aren't small -- to give you an idea of scale, that's me at 6' tall (in combat boots) above. An even bigger one is currently in the works! 🎃
S4 E8 — After two strangers are rescued from their stranded ship, Kirk sympathizes and offers them work in the laundry room. But when the newcomers steal a shuttle -- and every uniform on the Enterprise -- the senior officers must track them down or face court martial, naked.
Check out the full Star Trek cowboy crossover series in case you missed an entry!
What if, instead of Gary Mitchell, Curley Burne was the esper who ended up on the Enterprise? Think about it: a proclivity for emotional caretaking, the ability to charm townsfolk despite criminal behavior, his flirting with danger as if he already knows when outcomes are in his favor, his little floaty coin trick… Perhaps whispers of latent ESP powers?
Maybe at the end of Warlock, he rides off into the sunset, alone and disillusioned, trips over a jackrabbit, falls through a time portal, and lands in the 2250s. He gets his act together, joins Starfleet, and fills the hole Abe left in his heart with a young lieutenant named Kirk. They become fast friends, end up on the Enterprise together, cross the galactic barrier one day and, well, you know the rest. Imagine how absolutely unhinged he’d be with god-like powers. His puckish disposition would put Trelane and Q to shame.
He might not hurt anyone directly, but those supernatural powers of flirtation couldn’t be allowed to spread across the galaxy, so Kirk still drops a boulder on him. It’s not clear if he’s dead. Dr. Piper immediately requests a transfer on account of being "too old for Enterprise shit." Dr. McCoy replaces him. He steps onto the bridge looking like the spitting image of Curley, only now bathed and sporting a stylish new coif. Sulu and Uhura silently mouth WTFs in unison. Scotty rolls his eyes and mutters something about the captain having a type. Spock, phaser rifle in hand, marches off the turbolift with a, “Kill him while you still can.”
The rest of the series deals with Spock’s growing suspicion that McCoy is a mischievous time-traveling cowboy god responsible for every bizarre situation the Enterprise encounters. When McCoy offers to teach him poker, Spock snidely questions whether faro would be a more historically accurate game for a 19th-century earth cowhand to know. He narrows his eyes at every “old country doctor” mention. He isn't surprised when McCoy magically returns from the dead with a can-can-esque chorus line woman on each arm. The entire episode "Conscience of The Cowboy" is devoted to Spock’s attempts to prove McCoy’s dual identity.
@youandthemountains asked in the tags if I’d be willing to share my artmaking process, so for anyone else interested:
I frequently jump between mediums, so for better or worse, I’ve never had a set process. But I’m happy to walk through the steps I took to create my last piece and show the tools I used. Also, because I never want my creations mistaken for generative AI, I’ve gotten in the habit of documenting the work (perhaps excessively!) so I have plenty of WIP photos to share:
(More below the cut)
My current sketchbook is made of cold-pressed 100% cotton paper with a nice toothy vellum surface that’s great for wet and dry media. Usually, when working with ink, I start directly sketching with a pen or marker. But achieving reasonable character likeness was important here, and I didn’t want to mess it up, so I did a light pencil sketch first. I then inked it with a fountain pen and erased the pencil marks once dry. And because the pen was loaded with waterproof ink, it was safe to paint over with watercolor. As I was painting, I noticed the paper had a slight yellow tint which worked well with the warmer light sources but muddied the blues and purples. I wanted the color to be more vibrant, so I scanned the piece, digitally painted in some deeper values, and did a little color correction to bump up the cooler tones. I’m glad I did because the improved contrast made the bioluminescent parts pop.
I didn’t have a plan when I made this piece, and in hindsight, I wish I had done a little more line weight variation, but I’m still happy with how it came out. I think Spock’s pose is appropriately awkward. And the fact that he and McCoy seem to be sticking to their typically squashed 4:3 aspect ratio positioning despite the wide-open forest feels right.
These are the supplies I used, most of which work as a travel kit for plein-air painting and sketching (I ditch the longer paintbrushes and use the travel brush with a built-in water well [disassembled in the watercolor kit]):
Not all of my projects are as simple as the last one. For instance, the Sub Rosa painting I did last year was a big production that combined concept work, painting, graphic design, lighting design, and even some cosplay! A certain level of realism was needed to pull off a convincing romance novel cover, so good reference photos were crucial. But I wasn’t interested in re-painting a still shot from TNG footage. I wanted a completely original composition and pose with lighting that was far more dramatic than the scene it was parodying. So, I set up studio lights, dressed as Dr. Crusher, and took several hundred photos whipping my wig around with a high-powered fan blowing (I'm not posting those pics 😅). I then sifted through them for light and shadow details that eventually informed the painting you see.
Unfortunately, I hit a major snag when I realized I couldn’t find a single photo of Gates McFadden in similar lighting. And if the painting didn’t instantly read as her, the whole thing would be a bust. I didn't think it'd be that much of a challenge, but I failed so many times. When I got the lighting right, the likeness was lost. When I got the likeness right, the lighting looked disconnected from the rest of the painting. I wrestled with this for months. NGL a few angry tears were shed at one point, and many evening walks were spent sulking over whatever the hell anaphasic energy light was supposed to look like reflected on skin (if you look closely at the episode footage, there’s no actual green light on Beverly while Ronin’s in his non-corporeal state). Things finally clicked somewhere around the 10th (?) version I painted, and while the lighting’s still a little wonky, I’m playing it off as supernatural artistic license.
Thank you @youandthemountains for asking about my work and for all of your kind words! I always read the tags people leave; they're a big motivation to keep making more fanart!

hi 😊 can I ask you how do you usually store your film frames/slides? Someone gifted me one from the Lincoln ent. and I have no idea how not to cause even more damage to it!
Hi! That's a great gift and I'm glad you want to take care of it! To protect it from dust, dirt, and scratches, you have a few options:
*Slide storage box: a long, lidded paperboard box just wide enough to hold slides upright. This is probably a bit much if you only have one slide.
*Slide storage album page: a plastic sheet that holds multiple slides and can be inserted into a binder or photo album.
*Individual slide sleeve: a tiny, single slide-sized plastic envelope that you can store in a small cardboard box.
If you can't find any of these, a regular acid-free photo album or document sleeve should keep things dust-free. However, movement in a larger envelope may cause unwanted friction, and the slide may be more apt to fall out, so handle with care. These options are acid-free and allow for a little air movement, which is important because trapped humidity in an airtight container can accelerate film decay.
Once you have your slide in a sleeve or box, you'll want to store it in a stable environment away from light, heat, or high humidity. Often, the best place is a closet on your living area level. Avoid basements and attics where temperature and humidity fluctuate wildly. And as always, the sooner you scan your slide, the better!

This took a solid month to finish. In all my years of drawing nothing's given me eye strain like working on this man's arm hair. Literally still recovering, figuratively probably never will...
Sudden ambiguous eroticism, courtesy of L.A. Graf's Ice Trap:
Here's the thing: there's no way to pull Kirk's "surprise" move without crawling onto Bones's lap. This isn't the same as leaning on a desk that someone's seated 12" beneath. I think I got the proportions wrong in my illustration because it failed to show how absolutely lip to lip they'd be. It's also possible they could be whispering in each other's ears instead of talking mouth to mouth. If you don't believe me, try it yourself: feet on the ground, hands on the same surface your coworker the other person is sitting on.
