TXRD Texas Roller Derby 2017
“I loved the world of roller derby because I thought it was such an empowering metaphor, that you get out there and do it. It’s such a rocker, athletic, capable, cool exhibitionist sport; it’s about this great sort of camaraderie.”
I AM A BLOCKER !
I am a blocker. I am a winner. I am NOT a whiner. I wear my trucks loose and keep my bearings lubed. I defend my jammer – she who is my sole point scorer. Without points we do not win. Without her blockers, she cannot score, And so I push and hammer my way through the opposing all you can eat blocker buffet. Like freshly born colts, they continue to stand back up. And so I get my fill, gluttonous, bloated by the blockers that offer themselves up for sacrifice.
I am a blocker. Victory is my goal. I WILL hold back the opposing jammer. Every second that I hold her is a victory. Every aggravation that I cause her is a victory. Every point that I keep is a victory. These are MY teams points she is taking when she passes, and I won’t have it. If she is going to get my point, she is going to bruise for it.
I am a blocker. I will hold my position and fight for my teams victory. If I fall, I will rise again quickly. If I obtain a penalty, I will serve my time silently – plotting my next move, visualizing my victory. When I am released from the box, I will tear onto the track with a vengeance. I will watch the pack and find the best place to reenter, a place where my vengeance will prove most damaging to the opposition.
I am a blocker. A soldier in my team’s army. Posted on the front line - ready to take the heat for my jammer. One of four on the track: strong, united, and dangerous. We shall keep our walls strong and our eyes open. We shall protect our teammates, as we expect them to protect us. We shall set the pace of the pack, and WILL NOT allow the other team to set the pace. This is our game, and we will keep the opposing team guessing until it ends. WE are blockers, and we WILL BE victorious!

I'd repost with a pic of me in my first lineup in my first bout but I'm tryna keep this blog mostly anonymous.

Mantras for my new beginning
When male derby players feel oppressed by a culture in which they are the minority so they embark on a nonstop crusade to educate everyone about the lack of respect they get and the way their gender is marginalized and disrespected by the people who hold the power in this culture (you know, women).
Now, where on my gender equality priority list should I put “abolish that hateful, sexist term, ‘merby’”?
I watched roller derby in the 80s because my grandma did. A bunch of women brought derby back and formed it into what we play today. A patient and kind group of women literally held my hand teaching me to skate. Women picked me up and carried me off the rink when I broke my ankle and encouraged me in my recovery. Women taught me how to train for and play this game. How can I possibly ungrateful when because of all of that, I get to play on an amazing team in an amazing sport with an amazing community? Fuck you for even considering it. Play hard and remember who came before you.
This Girl Can - Charlie Campbell
Charlie has been back in action for Sport England’s ‘This Girl Can’ campaign, looking to inspire women up and down the country to get active. With a focus on bold colour and composition, the images capture the grit and determination of all the ladies involved.
With massive thanks to FCB Inferno and Sport England for the commission, and also to LouLou Productions, Eli Wakamatsu (Emma Davies Agency), Robyn Knight and Chris O’Driscoll for all their efforts in helping bring this together!

BOOOOOST
They renamed the POTUS account to POTUS44 and rolled a new POTUS account. This should have moved your Follow over to the archived Obama POTUS feed and kept you off the new Trump POTUS.

As a hetero man, it's a little weird talking about "derby kisses" when you only play with other men.
no piece of media has the emotional depth and complexity of chopped
I'm frequently reminded that a lot of my limitations in roller derby are based in "I'm afraid to do that". A lot of skills I "can't" do are just me being afraid to commit to the move or me not trusting my ankle not to break again.
This Has To Be The Greatest Idea Ever
