i’m reading a book about anxiety and in it the author talks about how some children with anxiety don’t learn — or unlearn, in some cases — how to self soothe themselves to sleep because their nervous system feels unsafe. it’s made me realize that not being able to fall asleep without a video of someone talking, a pillow between my legs, two stuffed animals in my arms, and a weighted blanket on top of my duvet isnt just typical sleeping issues. i just don’t know how to calm my nervous system enough to sleep, and i never have.

it explains why i would crawl into my moms bed until i was 8 or 9 (the age my second sibling came around, no more space in her bed for me because the babies needed her), because knowing that she was there was the only way i could sleep feeling safe. and it also explains why the only time ive ever been able to properly sleep through the night without waking up in the past i dont know how many years was when my boyfriend was visiting for two weeks and slept in my bed with me.

in conclusion i think the american government should let my british boyfriend move here instantly and grant him citizenship because i cant sleep without him. he shall be my medically required boyfriend. like a service dog. you wouldn’t take someone away from their service dog, would you?
