jonathan realizing nancy is a lesbian before shes realized it
nancy and steve talking while they wait for robin to show up to like movie night or something. nancy casually drops "yeah i wish robin was a boy so we could date lol" and before steve has time to unpack that, robin arrives
The Non-Actor Director Eliza Callahan
everyone say thank you catherine for being the reason anyone figured anything out in the first place. all of them may have been playing game changer, but she was the one changing the game.
robin is locked in on the task meanwhile nancy is having her bisexual awakening
Vickie dumps Robin right before college and she’s fully devastated about it and doesn’t expect to see her two weeks later at Family Video with a new girl Lucy. And the two girls They’re close, whispering in each other’s ears and laughing not even noticing anyone but Robin knocks something over then Vickie spots her.
“Oh! Robin, hey.” She glances at Lucy, catches herself. “This is Lucy. My—” she stops, then forces a smile. “Girlfriend.”
Lucy beams at her, genuinely and sweet.
Robin’s face drops fully and then without thinking blurts.
“Oh! Yeah I have a girlfriend too. She’s French and she Lives in Canada like Montreal and She’s visiting next week. Her name is—”
“Joséphine,” Steve blurts from behind the counter. “Joséphine!” Robin nods wildly. “She’s a model. Makes crepes too!”
Lucy smiles, all earnest. “We’d love to meet her sometime. Wouldn’t we, Vickie?”
Vickie looks like she’d rather be anywhere else. Nodding “Can’t wait.”
Later, at Steve’s house Robin’s having a full meltdown in Steve’s kitchen. “I don’t HAVE a French girlfriend! I don’t know any French people!”
Steve and her go back and forth, Steve trying to damage control. Nancy and Jonathan are at the kitchen table listening along and Nancy who’s quietly drinking tea. sets her cup down. “I’ll do it.”
“What,” Steve and Robin say in unison.
“What if she recognizes you?” Steve asks.
Nancy shrugs. “We never interacted. Different grades.”
“I said she was FRENCH,” Robin says, desperate biting her lip till it hurts.
Nancy stands up. And then in a perfect, French accent “Bonjour, I am Joséphine from Montreal. I make ze crepes and I am in love with zis American idiot.”
Steve and Robin are full gaping at her.
“Okay, that was good,” Steve admits.
Jonathan who’s just as surprised says “Since when do you—”
Nancy drops the accent. “Four years of French. Drama club. You guys never noticed.” She shrugs.
Robin sighs, head in her hands. “You’re hired.”
prompt!
Ronance AU where Nancy is a serious journalist and Robin is a cryptid/supernatural investigator/podcaster, and much to Nancy’s extreme annoyance Robin is the only one who can really help her with the story she is currently working on
Real enemies to lovers type situation
I love the idea of Nancy slowly falling in love with Robin during their friendship and, with it, slowly realizing she’s attracted to women and then taking some time to figure out her sexuality before she confesses.
But I ALSO love the idea of Nancy being completely clueless about her sexuality for months of their friendship until she sees Robin in a baseball cap and a baggy tee shirt with the sleeves cut off on a random Tuesday and gets smacked with her sexual awakening so violently that she nearly passes out
when robin starts working at WSQK, she collects everybody’s favourite songs so they’ll be on hand if somebody gets vecnaed. mike feels insanely vulnerable as he tells her “smalltown boy”, hiding his nerves and praying she won’t listen to or already know it and somehow See Him.
robin doesn’t think much of it at first, but as the week passes she starts curiously making her way through everybody’s songs, just to feel closer and understand them better. so when she gets around to giving “smalltown boy” a listen, she’s really paying attention to the lyrics.
and it’s so familiar to her, the feeling in the song, that she wonders, less a question and more amazement, if it could really be what she thinks. eager for a second opinion, she asks steve, without mentioning mike, “hey, what does this song… make you think of?” and replays it.
steve wanders over to listen, and as the song trails off he’s already asking, “is this one somebody gave you?”
“why?” she asks, suddenly thinking maybe she shouldn’t have shared. she trusts steve, duh, but if mike likes the song for That reason, it’s not her secret to tell.
he squints for a few seconds before softening in understanding, nudging her reassuringly, and quietly asking, “mike or will?”
“what? how?” she demands.
steve wrinkles his brow, confused. “what? it’s not like it’s gonna be anybody else. like, we all see it, right?”
robin makes a face, then spells it out. “no?”
steve raises his eyebrows, frowning. “okay,” he says dubiously.
quietly, robin checks they’re on the same page. “so you think…?”
“gay? yeah. a hundred percent.” he pauses, then asks, “it’s mike, right?”
“what the hell, dude.” she stares as if she suspects he has some strange superpower.
he shrugs. “i dated nancy. spent a lot of time at the wheeler house. i’ve been seeing those two dance around each other for like four years now.” he hesitates, then adds, “everybody kinda knows about will, but mike dating el sort of threw me off for a bit. not that i was, like… theorizing about it. just noticed. but then i was right about vickie, so i was like, oh, okay, cool, mike is gay. or something.”
robin nods slowly. “holy shit, dude. if it was ethical you could totally make money off this.”
“i think you’re just really bad at it,” he says. but he looks pleased.
robin squawks indignantly, spinning in her seat. “i noticed the song!” she protests.
steve levels his gaze at her. “rob. what other meaning could it possibly have?”
robin shrugs half-heartedly and mutters something about mr. hauser’s english class and the many symbolic layers of art.
steve groans. “sure. or the dude’s just gay.”
“of course you’d say that, mr ‘i hate essays’.” she knocks her head against his shoulder like a friendly cat.
“hey! what’s that supposed to mean?” steve nudges her head and they dissolve into laughter.
“d’you think i should, y’know…” she hesitates and nods toward the song.
“talk to him?” steve asks.
“yeah.” he shrugs.
“maybe. probably. but he might freak out. wheeler can be a bit antagonistic.”
robin nods, frowning. “and i think he already doesn’t like me much.” she pauses and quirks her brow. “are you trying to use essay words now?”
“what’s the matter with you? that’s a normal word. i know that word. it’s not even a big word.”
“i’m messing with you!” she tilts her head. “i dunno. maybe if i go about it real subtle.” at steve’s dubiously scrunched face, she insists, “i can do subtle! i can totally be subtle.”
he raises his hands. “i didn’t say anything!” softer, he says, “you’re a good person. you make people feel okay to be themselves. i think whatever you do will work out.”
robin blinks rapidly, then gives him a watery smile. “really going for the heartstrings there, huh?”
steve chuckles, a crooked smile on his face. “you’re just getting soft.”
after a pause, she says, “i think he feels really alone.”
he nods. “probably, yeah. i mean, lonely face, crying to your soul, nobody understands. it’s a rough song.” his eyes tighten looking down at her.
“yeah,” she finally agrees. it comes out heavy. “i’ll talk to him.”
steve smiles, squeezing her shoulder. she looks up and grins bravely, sniffling and wiping her eyes. “alright! let’s get a move on. we don’t get paid the big bucks to slack off.”
one day, robin plays “smalltown boy” for the town. before it starts, she says, “this one’s for a friend of mine who i think feels pretty alone. if you’re out there listening, you should know there’s people who do understand… even here at home.”
as the opening notes play, steve smirks and nudges her. “subtle.”
“shut up,” she says, grinning as her heart thumps nervously. “i thought it might help if he knows i’m cool first.”
“yeah, you are,” steve agrees, even though that’s not what she meant.
across town, mike wheeler is listening to rockin’ robin’s broadcast and feeling incredibly, vulnerably seen. but as the falsetto vocals fade out and his startled heart slows down, it’s a lot less scary than he thought it would be.
the thing I really enjoy with Nancy and Robin is the way that Robin likes Nancy being in control, but not in a way that she takes a back seat necessarily. In season 4 Robin announces that Nancy is in charge while all the older teens take the boat out onto the lake. Later, when Nancy tells Robin and Eddie to stay put, Eddie is ready to follow that order and tells Robin that they should wait because Nancy is in charge. And without skipping a beat Robin goes, "I made that shit up!"
Robin knows when to assert and support Nancy's leadership and then knows when not to listen to her and dive in anyway, and I love that sort of push and pull to them. It's a similar dynamic to earlier in the season with Pennhurt. Robin is content to let Nancy take the lead, but when shit starts to go south, Robin follows her own instincts to help get them out of trouble.
And for Nancy, she starts to really value Robin's out-of-the-box thinking and creative solutions that Nancy could not have come up with on her own. I think Nancy is a very stubborn character who believes her plans and ideas are the best, but Robin ends up surprising her and forces her to reevaluate ways to solve the mystery or problem in front of them.
Maya talking about filming the Pennhurst scene. 😊
One of my favorite characters, EVER. We miss you, Robin Buckley! 😢
Robin being a little weirded out because Mike is extremely interested in her love life. Like, it’s all he wants to talk about, “Are you dating someone? Who are they? How long? What’s their name? Oh, you broke up? When?”
Obviously at first, she’s super vague, attempting not to out herself. But after a while (and after Steve puts a worry in her head that Mike may have a crush on her), she finally tells him she’s gay.
Mike doesn’t even seem shocked or disappointed. If anything, he seems even more excited than he had before, constantly asking her about her dates or if she has a crush on anyone and other similar questions, even getting Holly to start asking her instead whenever she starts to ignore his questions, all of which is highly concerning from Robin’s perspective, but she kind of pushes it to the back of her mind and just gives him the bare minimum in hopes that’ll be enough to make him leave her alone.
She finally mentions it to Nancy one night at a sleepover, both of them lounging on Nancy’s bed doing their own thing. Mike was being weird and quiet earlier at dinner, staring at Robin nearly the entire time unless she glanced over at him, and when that situation is brought up, Robin decides to open up to Nancy about the entirety of it.
“Yeah, he’s been acting weird as hell around me. Steve is convinced he has a crush on me but, god, I really hope he’s wrong.”
Surprisingly, Nancy freezes, face pale, so Robin rushes to add that she thinks Mike is a good kid— a shithead, but a good kid— but, obviously, it’s a little uncomfortable to discuss her love life with him, especially now that Steve has her so worried that Mike may have an ulterior motive.
Nancy is silent for a long moment, then buries her face in her hands.
“Oh, I’m gonna kill him.”
Turns out, the only reason Mike was asking all those questions was because Nancy had opened up to him about her own crush on Robin and he was trying to give her ‘updates’ on Robin’s love life in order to convince her to go for it. She had just thought he was getting those updates subtly, or through gossip, not that he was just straight up asking Robin all these questions.
It works out, anyway, but Nancy still glares at Mike every time he haughtily insists that him being her wingman is the reason she and Robin got together in the first place.
the thing is that the epilogue robin outfit looks so much more in line with the clothes nancy made her wear for pennhurst than the clothes robin wore literally any other time in the show so like how are we supposed to conclude anything other than thag shes wearing nancys clothes again. because she slept over at nancys. because they
we are so lucky to have Maya Hawke and Victoria Pedretti as certified girl kissers

Nancy offering to be Robin’s first kiss and being so chill and relaxed about it but then they kiss and her entire worldview shifts in the span of ten seconds.
Robin somehow ends up being the one really cool about it (she’s a little blushy and giggly obv but she thinks Nancy’s straight and honestly she’s just really relieved to have her first kiss out of the way. She also tries her best to act so chill about it bc she doesn’t want Nancy to think she’s pervy)
Meanwhile Nancy is stuttering over her words, bright red, nearly falls off her bed because she’s so so aware of where her limbs are in relation to Robin, and keeps staring off into the distance like she’s seen a ghost (the ‘ghost’ is her lesbian awakening barreling towards her like a freight train)
Close encounters.
