I mean I know a certain level of projection on fictional characters and situations is inevitable and even healthy, but sometimes you got to step back into the real world to remind yourself that Character X is not your shitty parent/abusive ex/asshole boss/bully from high school, and that people who like Character X are not personally victimizing you.

c!Dream as a dying star that used to have several planets orbiting him but they all drifted away, and now he's alone. Until c!Punz, a astronomical body that has been moving uninterrupted through space for a very long time gets pulled into his orbit.
When Dream eventually dies, Punz will be destroyed in the aftermath..... but at least they aren't alone anymore

I can’t stop thinking about how so many of the “villainous” or antagonistic characters of the Dream smp get so heavily dehumanized by the other “more heroic” characters. Like it’s genuinely heartbreaking.
For a first example, while he isn’t a villain really or a central antagonist, c!Technoblade has been dehumanized by almost every single person he trusted and sided with safe for Philza, Ranboo, and Dream who all see him as a person. People he used to trust and would fight alongside and ally with like Tommy as the biggest example only saw him as something to be used, as a weapon. We know the first betrayal Techno felt where they used him to overthrow a government only to replace it with another equally as flawed, but even beyond that, he has only been seen as a weapon to use and then throw away once they’re done. Think about Tommy’s plan right before he got exiled to bring Techno in to defeat Dream only to immediately turn on him and stab him in the back once they’ve finished. We can go further in the story to the time around Doomsday where Tommy, while having incoherent arguments, seems to unconsciously once again give off the feeling that he basically doesn’t see Techno as a person capable of feelings. But Tommy isn’t the only person who saw him in this just a weapon state, countless other people have essentially implied that they don’t view Techno as anything other than a tool. The biggest examples other than Tommy I can think of are mainly Quackity and Fundy who were all too eager to hop onto Tommy’s plan of using Techno. And it’s funny because, it lines up with what I said. Techno is 100% one of the characters who faces being dehumanized the most, and notice on most sides of things, he ends up being viewed as one of the more antagonistic characters by all of the “good guys” around him. I feel so sad for him because he has such a clear cut moral code that he hasn’t changed. He has devoted himself to it, and he genuienly believes in it and stays true to it. But people try to twist it, they use it against him, and they use it as an excuse to slap a label onto him that really doesn’t fit. The man just wanted to retire with Philza in the mountains 😔 why did Tommy have to bring him out of retirement
And the second I wanted to talk about is Dream. Now Dream himself tries to portray himself as an untouchable god, but he doesn’t reduce himself to less than a person even at that. For a long time, people have this mindset of seeing Dream only by the labels of “Threat,” “Not a Threat,” and “Villain” primarily. No one considers he’s a real person. In the build up to his corruption, he was constantly used as a scapegoat for conflicts he didn’t start, conflicts he was on the defense for sometimes even. In addition to this, we’ve seen Tommy rule Dream as only being a Monster, and Dream replied with a very calm “Okay.” And as much as that could be him being cocky like Okay, you think that way or whatever, I think it definitely falls more in the vein of He’s been dehumanized so much, reduces to something paper thin and had his humanity ignored so at this point he just accepts it. Dream accepts he won’t be seen as a person, and he might as well use that monster title to his advantage when it comes to making himself seem untouchable. Unfortunately, it didn’t stop with him going to prison either. Sam quite literally treats him as less than human. He treats him like he’s an animal to be neglected and hurt for the sake of “discipline,” and Sam quite clearly only really view Dream as An Annoyance with the way he address him, talks about him to others, etc. It’s genuinely frightening to see, and it’s a big reason why Sam is slowly becoming more and more of a discomfort character for me.
I also want to say, I think there’s a reason why the “good” characters do this. I mean, no matter how horrible someone is, no matter what bad actions they’ve taken, no one deserves to be dehumanized. No one deserves to have their humanity taken away from them and be used for that reason or for any harm forced upon them to be justified by “They’re less than human.”
But yeah, anyways, I think there’s a reason why they do this. It’s a lot easy to bear the weight of your actions when you don’t see the person you’re doing them to as a person. It’s a lot easier to justify yourself, and it’s a lot easier to mentally handle it. It becomes harder to use someone for a war then stab them in the back if you consider they are capable of gaining trauma, of feeling emotions and being hurt, and of creating bonds that could be broken. It’s a lot easier to justify your so called Morally Superior Judgments and Actions when the person who’s morals your comparing yours too isn’t someone you see as a person capable of handling or carrying those morals. I think that’s why a lot of the characters were supposed to be rooting for or we were supposed to be rooting for do this. It’s a way for them to cope, for them to still feel like the good guys because if you’re not inflicting pain on a human being/a person, well then it’s fine. They’re just an exaggeration of traits! They’re just a cardboard cutout of a vilain! They’re just a monster! They’re just a tool I can use for my own gain and then throw away once I’m done with them!
This is part of what I find so interesting about the Dream smp. There isn’t anything truly black and white morally no matter how hard some people (coughcertainTommyapologistscough) try to make it seem like it is. The “heroic” characters, the protagonists, they still do horrible things. They may have good intentions and a good end goal in mind, but inherently, they do bad things along the way. No one is morally perfect, and I don’t see anyone in the actual story trying to push this narrative unless they’re clearly not morally right trying to justify themselves. The only people I see pushing the moral perfectness of certain characters is fans, but that’s a whole ‘nother bag that I won’t get into here.
Anyways, just a lil bit of an analysis about stuff and about characters and everything y'know! I love writing these, they bring me joy, and the Dream smp is my current hyperfixation to the point I’m losing sleep against my will over it so I need to vent that obsession out some how.

My stuff!! I had so much fun :D
One of the many reasons I loved the dream SMP was 1) because it was comprised mainly of pvpers and speedrunners, with hardly any building or redstone specialists, and 2) entering the End was forbidden and the End never factored into the SMP at any point. It led to a lack of resources and infrastructure that gave the server a medieval feeling to it. Players who accumulated a lot of resources usually did so through solo grinding. No one could make communal resource farms because they'd all be at risk of becoming pieces in the geopolitical war games, and/or being destroyed (I think the only piece of communal infrastructure that survived unscathed was the underground spider farm near the Eggpire). People didn't have elytra, and roads were constantly being destroyed, so the primary method of rapid transportation was Riptide tridents, which as far as I'm aware is pretty unique to the Dream SMP and showcases the really awesome and interesting alternatives that can develop in a no-End lategame. God the dog-eat-dog worlds that a bunch of bored men create are hell to live in and absolutely marvellous to tell stories in. The SMPs with End access and reliable resource reserves and infrastructure just can't compare.
