something i find really refreshing about death note as an aroace person is that light's lack of attraction to misa or anyone is never used as evidence of how evil he is, and the manga is actually pretty intentional about avoiding that pitfall. like, a lesser story would have yotsuba light be legitimately attracted to misa, and state that the ability to feel attraction is the difference between light and kira, between good and evil. but instead, the difference between light and kira is that, while both feel a lack of canonical romantic attraction toward anyone, light is honest about that and refuses to fake romantic attraction, while kira is willing to manipulate the feelings of others. light's lack of attraction to misa is never used to demonize him — in fact, how he treats that lack of attraction shows us that, when hes not kira, he does have a genuine moral code

thinking about light who's very aware hes popular with the ladies, but doesn't seem to have any interest in dating before he becomes kira. wondering if his firm boundary about manipulating the feelings of others comes from being an aroace person who's also quite attractive to others, and being very aware of that.

honestly misa and light are so compelling to me because both of them have like, subzero interest in one another and in fact actively resist any attempt to learn one single thing about the other. this is obvious from light's side of things & probably does not need expanding upon, but misa also does not care even a little bit about light -- she is instead in this parasocial relationship with this fake made-up version of him that has nothing whatsoever to do with him. like the amount of effort she puts into ignoring and wildly misinterpreting every single non-instructional thing light has ever told her is truly astounding. she lives with him for years and is genuinely convinced that he's a sweet, thoughtful man who is completely obsessed with her and can't live without her due to the depths of his love. they're soulmates and also strangers.

i think it’s difficult to understand the complexities of misa and light’s relationship unless you yourself have been through a toxic relationship.

my ex-girlfriend cornered me into a one-sided relationship and forced me to stay with her despite me telling her several times that i could not love her (i am aroace). but she put me into a position where i had to agree and never let me leave her, she would keep coming back and threatened me with the fact that she could destroy my social life at any moment and turn my circle of friends against me, due to her being at the top of our school’s social ladder and me being at the bottom. it took nearly a year for me to get out due to her constant gaslighting, and i managed to piss her off enough to make HER break it off.

the point of this is NOT to say that these experiences are equal to what happened between misa and light. i am not defending either of them. the point is that light did not “corrupt” misa. misa is not your cute little girlboss who can do no wrong. misa and rem still FORCED light into a relationship with misa despite him repeatedly saying “no,” or “i can’t be your boyfriend,” and so many people ignore that.

misa still did bad things. so did light. the situations they were BOTH under were likely extremely traumatizing. i don’t hate misa at all, nor do i hate light. i just think many people in this fandom are overlooking the fact that rem and misa still forced light’s hand.

THIS. people act like Misa was just a victim of Light's evil manipulation, when she LITERALLY THREATENED TO KILL HIM BY WAY OF REM IF HE REFUSED. Was Light nice to her? Fuck no, but can you blame him? She asked him to use her, so he made the best of the situation. He wanted nothing to do with her. Did Misa deserve better? Yes, but so did Light.

i feel like we are too hard on light yagami sometimes. imagine learning that you have absolute power over death itself and also the universe is cosmically uncaring and knowing for sure that there is literally nothing beyond the veil of death. you are being haunted by a perpetual ghost that will kill you if you don't do something interesting with that power. there is no higher power than you and the pen in your hand. and also you are in high school.

Asexual aromantic Light Yagami is so real but L X Light is one of the funniest ships of all time since Light literally orchestrated his death and pretended to cry over L's dead body. And we're saying he's in love. Lucky for me, I love having many different little versions of the same fictional universe in my head so it is all true xoxo
