I’m not trying to be rude, but she just looks fucking stupid
as a writer, it’s very important that you know this: whenever you tell yourself “this will only be one-chapter-long” that is a lie. your brain is lying to you. it won’t, in fact, be just a short one-shot
shannon hale is so insanely good at details it makes me go a little feral like:D that bit in the short story book where ashlynn hears about a boy hanging up a birdhouse and like. ofc we KNOW its hunter but she develops both their characters and why they end up liking each other without having any of them ever meet. we can see why they get along despite their differences because deep down they’re both very gentle and kind people who enjoy helping animals— ashylnn doesn’t see hunter, but she hears of the boy who hangs up the birdhouse because she’s helping animals in the forest and they’re chatting away about him. and she notices that he tries very hard not to be noticed, that his steps were soundless and that if she were anyone else she wouldn’t have noticed him, only it was hard to sneak up on her bc she could understand animals. and she respects this as much as she can; she tries to only see who he is after the robins talk about the birdhouse, but she can’t catch him before he goes. all she sees is the birdhouse that he made, and she’s the one who helps the baby birds get up to the house. and again, they never meet, but their respective acts of kindness allow them to sort of cross paths anyway, and in the end they kind of work on this project together without ever even meeting one another. and i think it’s really beautiful that hale thought to pair them together because their destiny really is all about goodness and kindness; cinderella who endures and toils and remains kind and the huntsman who spares a young girl’s life and helps her escape like OKAY. okay
I firmly believe what ever you’re obsessed with at 11/12 years old becomes a core part of who you are, regardless if you lose interest in it or not. Maybe some of you were lucky and were obsessed with warrior cats or smth, and if you’re real unlucky it was probably twilight.
There are some days even after the dust has settled, even after all the times Mira and Zoey whispered how much they love her into her ears, Rumi knows–she knows.
But still.
There are days.
Her hoodie pulled tight around her neck. Oversized and swallowing her up. The ghosts of memories clinging a little too tightly to her mind.
Those days Mira makes sure to scoop Rumi up in her arms. Hold her tight until she once again sees that peaceful smile on Rumi’s face. The one that she gets when she remembers she safe. She’s loved.
And selfishly, Mira likes to remind herself that Rumi is here. She came back for them. For her.
With Rumi warm and real and safe in her arms, Mira could stay forever.

since derpy's reaction to jinu dying wasn't shown, how would he react to him dying?

honestly I think derpy is the kind of animal that has the intelligence of a human or a very very smart- *searches smartest animal on earth besides humans* *sees its a dolphin* hm. okay maybe he's not as smart as a dolphin. maybe he has the level of intelligence of a crow or a raven.
so, I think he has the hability to grieve. in the movie, he's shown empathy towards Jinu while holding the bracelet Rumi gave him. he has the hability to understand humans to a certain degree (he can deliver messages) so I think he could understand Jinu is dead somehow. it isn't shown in the movie, of course, but my headcanon is that Jinu is linked to the magpie and the tiger somehow (Susie and Derpy were their names, right?), so maybe they're able to tell he's missing.
maybe Derpy doesn't know that Jinu's dead. but Rumi knows. and isn't that tragic?
[we don't actually know if Jinu's dead 100%, I think some people headcanoned he was in Rumi's sword. He gave her his soul after all. but shhhh we're not paying that any mind for now]
If I would have to write a scene about it (in a sequel, for example), I picture it something like this:
The girls are learning about Rumi's powers a bit after the events in the movie.
Because she herself doesn't know much, but she's not repressing her demon side anymore, they are learning together about it. I imagine that, because she's not actively denying it, she gets bigger fangs, the patterns change qith her emotions, the whole thing.
One day after a shooting of the new lbum, Rumi goes to her room, exhausted, and throws herself on the bed... Only to find avery familiar blue tiger already on it.
She looks to the side and sees a magpie.
At first, her brain freezes. why there's a magpie in her room? is that... a tiny hat? wait. blue tiger...
she comes to her senses once she sees the tiger staring at her. she steps back and throws her bin on accident.
Derpy gets distracted immediately, and she starts playing with the bin, the magpie judging him.
because Rumi doesn't say anything, Derpy makes a prrrp? sound and bonks his head against Rumi's leg or something
everything comes rushing back. Rumi's suddenly back to the night Rumi died, the memories with him.
she sobs, and hugs Derpy, apologizing over and over
and Derpy... understands. a little bit. he croons, and purrs, trying to confort her. the cub. his cub now
he would be sad, of course. once Zoey and Mira eventually learn about Derpy and Susie, and they obviously let them stay (Zoey: OMG A GIANT TIGER, HE'S SO CUTEEE. CAN WE KEEP IT? What I'm asking, of course we will keep him! Mira: aaaaand it's a he now. he will have to stay isn't he. (Rumi gives her puppy eyes. Zoey gives her puppy eyes. Mira sighs. of course he will), I believe he would grieve for a while.
Jinu and Derpy were obviously close. maybe he didn't see him as a cub the way Derpy sees Rumi as his cub but they would be close. so he would grieve for a while. he would stay and go as he pleases, along with Susie, but Rumi and him would grieve together. staying in the tower, moping, sleeping a lot. eventually he would move on, but...

i imagine that the Sunlight Sisters are in semi-retirement and celine is starting to take over more CEO responsibilities.
i'm undecided on rumi becoming a hunter or not because 1) i'm not sure how i want the honmoon to "choose" its hunters (if hunters are specifically chosen or if you're just trained to use it) and 2) idk if mi-yeong/celine would want rumi to become a hunter. i'd LOVE to hear your thoughts!!!!
also don't ask me where rumi's father is idc ALSO please tell me what you think about rumi's patterns in this AU. bc if they spread bc of shame, would her patterns have grown? i also gave too much thought into rumi's hairstyle for it to have ended up in french braids, but i think it fits. bc if rumi's braid was a way of honoring her mother, she might have a different style if mi-yeong lived <<

After the Idol Awards, Mira catches Rumi sleeping on the couch one morning. It's highly unusual for the super early riser. Rumi plays it off by saying she came out for a snack, ate at the couch and fell asleep before she could return to her room. Believable enough however, Mira proceeds to catch Rumi 3 more times in the span of a week and a half. On the 4th time, it's in the middle of the night.
When she sits on the couch, Rumi wakes up and is caught dead to rights. There's no wiggling out of a true explanation now. Mira asks her "why are you really sleeping on the couch?" Cause she's noticed the lack of any food/wrappers on the coffee table each time she tries to use the midnight craving excuse.
Rumi admits that shes been having trouble sleeping since the awards. They may have all talked and made up, but it hasnt fixed everything. There're still some residual tension between them even if they all try to ignore it. The only thing that seems to help Rumi sleep is when she's closer to her girls. Cause at least out here she can hear Zoey softly snore, or when Mira gets up to go to the bathroom. It reminds her that they're here and they're safe. That they didn't actually leave her, and Rumi didn't lose them due to her secrecy.
Mira is upset by this cause Rumi could just ask to sleep in either of their rooms, but she knows Rumi is still not great at accepting/asking for the care she so desperately wants.
Mira gets up off the couch and takes Rumi's hands to pull her up "come on" she threads their fingers together and drags Rumi to her own room. When in bed, Mira is the big spoon and holds Rumi close. They dont talk and quickly fall asleep.
The next day the three of them are on the couch watching TV and when Mira decides to call it a night she gets up, "I'm going to bed, Rumi you coming?" She casually tosses over her shoulder as she already starts toward her room. It takes a beat for Rumi to get up too, and then Mira calls out from the hallway "Zoey you too!"
Zoey bounces up off the couch, excited about their apparent sleepover. The three get into bed, Rumi in the middle. They start to cuddle and eventually Rumi starts to cry. Zoey notices first and is instantly worried. "Rumi what's wrong?"
Rumi takes a while to express that she's just overwhelmed. The tears are more happy than sad (though still from a pain within her) she tells Zoey about how shes had trouble sleeping and Zoey cuts her off with an open invitation to her bed whenever Rumi needs. Mira echoes the invitation and Rumi buries herself further into the comfort of her girls. (She never sleeps alone on the couch again.)
Celine doing some interview and off handedly refers to rumi as her daughter
"So what do you do with all this free time now?"
"Nothing much, my daughter and her girls sometimes come by me for dinner– They like to show up unannounced actually, but those girls keep me on my toes."
Celine barely even blinks while saying it, as if it was the most natural word her mouth could form.
The rest of the interview is just Celine bringing up Huntrix as much as she can, bragging about their successes and overall being the proud mom that she is.
And while she rarely makes public appearances, these few ones always end up going viral. Rumi wakes up to her social media going crazy, and she absolutely melts seeing it. She makes it a point to bring up more anecdotes during her own interviews or livestreams, the fans eat up any information they can get, and it drowns out the negativity that may have surrounded the sunlight sisters post disbandment.
Nother headcanon for y'all to chew on.
Celine is not actually nearly as much of a hardass as the girls think she is. They'd get into all kinds of crazy silly shenanigans and she'd walk up like :| just stare at them until Rumi "oh no an emotion let's run away now" Ryu just starts doing laps, which the girls immediately go along with bc ??? of course they're gonna have to do laps or something they were definitely breaking SOME kind of rule right?
But the whole time Celine is just internally fighting for her life to not fkin bust out in completely undignified giggles, and before she actually regains her composure the girls are already gone and behaving so? problem? solved?
And one day like post movie they're having Bonding Time all together and Celine is telling a story about (shamelessly stolen from my buddies in the discord) how she and Mi-yeong tried to fire her sword from her bow and then she's onto how that reminds me of the time she caught the girls tying one of Zoey's shin-kals to the end of Rumi's braid for Awesome Whip Attacks and she was so glad they ran off bc she started cackling (and crying a bit) the moment they were out of sight.
And the girls are like 'wait were you not going to punish us?' and she just shakes her head and Zoey and Mira stare at Rumi like 'THEN WHY DID WE DO LAPS?' and poor Rumi is just 'I PANICKED! I RAN! YOU FOLLOWED ME!'
Cue, of course, absolute chaos.
