VINNIE HACKER via TikTok
as the words echos back to him, he nods. of course, he didn't want to run away, but it was the only option here. he even went as far as going to her parents and asking if he could be the one to be married to her, he got the status. . . but they still turned him down. he already thought it through, he could easily empty his bank account and they would be set for life; one of the perks of being a trust fund kid. a slight chuckle escapes his lips, hearing that she won't dye her hair. "whatever, if you won't then you'll have to run for it if they catch us." hues met hers, softening ever so slightly. "there's no a thing i won't do for you, besides won't you think it'll be fun living it up on an island? or if you prefer blending in we can maybe go to the city?" the possibilities were endless, but one things for sure was that she was going to get her way with him.
it wasnât as if yasmine didnât have money. over the years, sheâd built up a respectable savings account from every summer job sheâd worked, quietly putting away every paycheck she could. financially, she knew they could make it workâat least for a while. they could afford a plane ticket, a small apartment, and enough time to figure everything else out. it wasn't the money that scared her. it was what would happen after they disappeared. the thought of dillon getting dragged into the mess because of her made her stomach twist. her family wasn't the type to simply accept her walking away. they would search for her. they would ask questions. they would blame someone. and that someone would be him. "no... we can't do it," she whispered, shaking her head before the temptation could pull her in any further. "i can't risk you getting into trouble, dillon." the words hurt to say. she couldn't lose him. at the same time, she couldn't imagine running away alone. if she left without him, she'd spend every day wondering if she'd made the right choice. but if he came with her, she'd constantly worry that she'd ruined his life in the process. as he continued talking, painting picture after picture of what their lives could look like, she couldn't stop the smile that slowly spread across her face. she could see it so clearly. a tiny apartment overlooking the ocean on some quiet island. or maybe a cozy place tucked into a bustling city where no one knew their names. they'd decorate it together, argue over furniture, spend lazy Sunday mornings drinking coffee by the window, and build a life that belonged to them instead of everyone else. no expectations. no arrangements. no parents deciding her future. just them. god, she wanted that life more than anything. "that all sounds so amazing," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "and i really... really want to do it." her smile faltered as reality settled back over her. "but if it puts you at risk, dillon..." she swallowed hard, tears threatening to gather in her eyes. "i can't do it." she stepped a little closer, searching his face as though hoping he'd somehow convince her it would all be okay. "i don't want my family putting a reward out for you or blaming you for helping me disappear." she let out a shaky breath, her heart aching. "and i don't want you getting into trouble with your family because of me." her eyes searched his, filled with equal parts hope and heartbreak. "i couldn't live with myself if the price of my freedom was losing yours."
the house holds fond memories, ones where she believes she would tell her children one day -- never did she expect it to be packed up. each and every room held a moment, one where she would pick up and go back to in a heartbeat. iridescent still recalls the very first time she pulled up to the beach house, she was a terrified little girl who just had been adopted by an american family and soon little by little that adopted family emerged into and blossomed into her real family. through it all, ethan was the one person who's always been kindest to her, welcomed her in and never left her out. it was no surprise that iridescent developed her very first crush upon the boy who made her feel like home. it was almost as if they were stuck in a traunce, staring at one another before the soft whispers of his voice echos through, giving her the courage to step inside and glance around before her hues lands upon him once again. iridescent wasn't sure if she should reach out and give him a hug, so instead she kept her hands to her side. "i never seen it so empty in here," she admits, it almost felt like shadows of what used to be with everything packed in boxes. "i miss things here," i miss you, she wants to add, but refrains by biting on her bottom lip.
the house felt painfully empty with only him inside. the furniture still sat exactly where it always had, waiting for the movers to come and haul it away, but all the little things that had once made the place feel alive had been packed into neatly taped boxes. the framed photographs were gone, the shelves stood bare, and the familiar scent of sunscreen and salty air had long since been replaced by dust and silence. ethan wasn't ready to let this house go. ever since he and Iridescent had grown up, the beach house had sat untouched for years, visited only every now and then out of obligation or curiosity. last summer, after coming home from college, he'd made the drive out here on a whim, hoping the familiar surroundings would bring back the comfort they once had. instead, he'd stayed only one night. the silence had been unbearable, every room reminding him of people who weren't there anymore. he'd left the next morning feeling lonelier than when he'd arrived. "yeah... neither have i," he replied quietly, closing the front door behind her. for a brief moment, he let himself look at her, but only for a moment. if he stared any longer, she was bound to catch him. instead, his gaze drifted across the empty living room, taking in the faded hardwood floors, the familiar staircase, and the windows that overlooked the stretch of beach where they'd spent countless summers. everything looked exactly the same, yet somehow it all felt completely different. "i hate that being back here doesn't feel the way it did when we were kids," he admitted, a faint smile tugging at the corner of his mouth before fading just as quickly. "it used to feel... endless. like we'd spend every summer here forever." he let out a quiet laugh, more bittersweet than amused, and slipped his hands into his pockets. "i guess that's the worst part about growing up." his voice softened as his eyes wandered toward the hallway leading to the bedrooms. "you spend so much time wishing you were older, and then one day you come back to the places that made your childhood... and you realize the place didn't really change." he glanced back at her, the sadness in his expression impossible to hide. "we did." for a second, he almost smiled again. "if i could go back and relive just one more day here... i'd do it without even thinking twice."
words of confirmation echoing from jaden that her boyfriend did in fact forget about their anniversary, how he'd rather be out with a group of friends than to be celebrating their relationship. . . or maybe that's what seraphina was to him, just an accessory he takes out when necessary. "oh, he must of forgotten to inform me," rubbing her lips together to prevent a frown from forming, realizing that her presence wasn't all that important to her boyfriend. when the question of why she was so dressed up was brought up, she felt like an idiot for mentioning that his brother forgot their anniversary, despite writing it on his calendar hanging from his wall. "i thought i would surprise caiden," she lies perfectly through her teeth, trying to save face. glancing over towards him, her eyes finally takes in his own appearance -- how his tank clings onto him and god . . . she really shouldn't be staring at her boyfriend's brother like that.
sliding his hands into the pockets of his basketball shorts, jaden kept his eyes on her. it wasn't anything new. somehow, no matter where she was or how crowded the room happened to be, his gaze always found its way back to her. she belonged with his brother. that fact alone should have been enough to make him look away, to bury whatever feelings had quietly taken root over the months. instead, all it did was fill him with guilt every time he caught himself staring. watching the way his brother treated her was harder than he'd ever admit. more than once, he'd wanted to tell her she'd chosen the wrong brotherâthat she deserved someone who actually appreciated herâbut he never did. as far as he knew, she had never looked at him as anything more than a friend. so he kept those thoughts to himself. he gave a small nod, sensing there was probably a reason she'd gone to the effort of dressing up, but he wasn't about to pry. if she wanted to tell him, she would. âare you hungry?â he asked after a brief silence. it was a simple question, but it carried more meaning than he intended. the last thing he wanted was to leave her alone in caiden's room, trapped with her thoughts after everything that had happened. and if he was being honest with himself, he was searching for any excuse he could find to spend a little more time with her.
at this moment, he wish nothing more than to had broken the news about their breakup the moment that it happened -- it would've saved him this awkward trip, where he had no place, but these damn four walls and her. what was meant to be a loving trip meant to be spent cherishing their friendships love, he can't help, but question if this was some twisted fate that they were in this position. "you act like you never shared a bed with me before," words came out before he could even stop himself. deciding not to glance over her direction as he takes in a small room, meant to be cozy and loving just for them. "if you hate it so much, we could just go out there and tell everyone that we've broken up."
sharing a room with him wasn't the worst part. it was the awkwardness she wasn't looking forward to. they hadn't spokenâor even seen each otherâsince the breakup, and now they were expected to spend the next few days sleeping under the same roof, pretending everything was fine. if there was ever a recipe for disaster, this had to be it. when milo spoke, her eyes drifted toward him. for a moment, she considered arguing, letting all the thoughts she'd been holding back spill out. but what would be the point? it wouldn't change anything, and neither of them would walk away feeling any better. so she swallowed the words before they ever had the chance to leave her mouth. âno... no, it's okay,â she said, giving a small shake of her head. the last thing she wanted was for her best friend to find out the truth right before her wedding. she could already picture the panic, the guilt, and the inevitable offer to rearrange rooms or somehow fix a situation that couldn't be fixed. this weekend wasn't about her. it was about celebrating someone she loved, and she refused to let her own relationship drama cast a shadow over it. âwe can make this work,â she said quietly, forcing a small, reassuring smile. âit's only a few days. we can be adults about it.â
the plan was thought of, late at night where she was a few drinks in. the perfect idea, "you think that we can't? we already have that close bond that everyone's suspicious of." and she truthfully didn't see why everyone was so suspicious of their friendship, it wasn't like ever fallen into bed together in a less innocent manner. lips pressed together into a tight line, "besides, my mom would finally get off my back about dating one of her work friend's son," nose crinkles at the thought as soft sigh escapes, was he really doubting it? was it really too crazy of an idea for them to fall through with? maybe she shouldn't of even bring it up in the first place. nervously fiddling with the bracelet clasp upon her wrist, until his next words causing her hues to snap up. "i'm in it if you are," she nods her head sending him a light smile. "and if you get your girl back you could publicly dump me in front of everyone, deal?"
maybe they should've thought this plan through a little more thoroughly. then again, it hadn't exactly been born from careful planning. it had been a spur-of-the-moment idea that somehow kept sounding better the more they talked about it. besides, pretending to date wouldn't be that difficult... would it? they already shared a close bond. their friends teased them about it constantly, joking that wherever one of them was, the other wasn't far behind. whether they were sitting together, talking for hours, or showing up to places as a pair, people had been making assumptions about them long before either of them suggested fake dating. âi think we can pull it off,â chase said with a small nod. âi just want to make sure we're both one hundred percent committed.â his fingers disappeared into his dark hair as he leaned back in his chair, finishing the last sip of his beer. almost immediately, the bartender slid another one in front of him. âi'm all in,â he said without hesitation, wrapping his hand around the fresh bottle. âif we're doing this, we're doing it right.â a laugh escaped him at her next comment. âno, no deal.â he pointed the neck of the beer bottle in her direction, an amused grin spreading across his face. âi'm not publicly dumping you. we can just... mutually decide things aren't working out, you know?â he shrugged. âbe one of those couples that posts some dramatic statement about how they're better off as friends.â
out of all jobs, how the hell did he manage to get stick with this one? with this particular brat, it was annoying, frustrating and he was sure he would be balding by thirty after he's done babysitting her. in reality, his occupation was ensuring that she was safe, that no harm would come her way, but god did she make it difficult with how reluctant she was to listen to anything he has to say. "because i get paid to make sure no idiot tries anything," monotone voice echos out, as if he's a robot. the high pitch sounds of her whining rings through his ears, instantly irritation scatters across his features, "can't be as bad as being suffocated in real life," didn't see the reason to beat around the bush, she was highly profiled, everyone wanted a taste of her money and that was the only reason why he was on board. "will you stop being such an annoying brat, you already get everything you want."
hearing him speak was enough to make her want to roll her eyes. she knew he was only doing his jobâshe'd heard that excuse more times than she could countâbut did he ever take a day off? did he ever stop hovering? it was suffocating. she understood why he was there. she knew exactly why her father had hired him and why he insisted on surrounding her with security. but nothing had happened to her, and as far as she was concerned, nothing was going to happen. at least, that was what she kept telling herself. âhonestly, anything sounds better than you invading my space twenty-four seven,â she shot back. growing up, she'd never known what privacy felt like. there had always been bodyguards lingering just out of sight. security teams stationed outside every building she entered, and drivers waiting to take her wherever she needed to go. every outing had been planned, monitored, and reported back to her father. then she went away to college. for the first time in her life, she'd had a taste of freedom. she could walk across campus without someone trailing behind her, grab coffee with friends whenever she wanted, and make decisions without feeling like someone was watching her every move. it hadn't lasted nearly long enough. now she was right back where she'd started. another bodyguard. another man shadowing her every move. another reminder that no matter how old she got, her father still didn't trust her to live her own life. her train of thought came to an abrupt halt as his last comment finally registered. she blinked once before narrowing her eyes. âwhat?â she asked, taking a step toward him. âyou did not just call me a brat.â a look of complete disbelief spread across her face, though there was the faintest spark of challenge behind her eyes. âoh, you've got some nerve.â

"listen. . . god, this might be a crazy idea, but why don't we just run away?" after going around in aimless circles, the only conclusion that he could come up with that would make everyone happy was if they just dipped. who would truly go out and look for them? there was no way in hell he was going to allow his best friend to get into an arrange marriage that she doesn't even want. the thought alone made him want to punch something, but instead he shuts his eyes tightly exhaling ever so slightly, hoping his best friend didn't think he was totally insane for suggesting it. "can even dye our hairs and change our names."
ârun away?â yasmine repeated, her brows knitting together as the idea settled in. packing up and leavingâit wasnât a bad thought, not really. it had just never occurred to her as a solution. she was bound to an arranged marriage, something she took no pride in and had no real say over. her parentsâ marriage had been arranged too, and thankfully it had worked out for themâbut that didnât make it right for her. she wasnât ready to settle down. she was young, restless, still aching to live her life before being tied to someone she hadnât chosen. her best friend had heard it allâthe anger, the fear, the nights sheâd cried about a future that felt stolen from her before it even began. âiâm not dyeing my hairâŠâ she rambled suddenly, the words tumbling out as a small smile crept onto her lips. then she looked at him, something hopeful and fragile flickering in her eyes. âwaitâare you serious?â she asked softly. âyouâd really want to run away with me?â

a text message lighting up her phone with a name that she'd never think she'd see ever again, it made her heart skip a beat. after all those years, she still didn't have the courage to delete his number. iridescent couldn't even recall the last time she spoke to him, but he was always fresh on her mind, hoping that he was flourishing. she had to remind herself that he was only reaching out to get her items back to her, that maybe he didn't want any memories of her at all. nervously, she knocks upon the door, almost breathless as she sees the sight of him again. "hi," was the only thing that utters from her plump lips, he was as handsome as she remembered.
just seeing her things lined up in the clear storage bins in the living room made his chest tighten, memories rushing in so fast they almost stole his breath. this house had been the constant in their lives, the place where everything felt easier, where summers stretched endlessly. every year, without fail, his family and hers would pile into their cars and drive out here, spending a monthâsometimes twoâsoaking in the sun, the salt air, and the quiet comfort of each other. days blurred into beach walks, sunburned shoulders, and late-night laughter drifting through open windows. back then, it had felt like nothing could ever change. but it had. ethan had stared at his phone more times than he cared to admit, her name glowing on the screen while his thoughts ran wild. the knock on the door pulled him from his thoughts, and a smile curved at his lips before he could stop it. he crossed the room quickly, hand lingering on the handle for just a second too long before opening it. there she was. for a moment, he forgot how to breathe. she stood in the doorway, familiar and unfamiliar all at once, the girl heâd known layered beneath someone more composed, more grown. time had softened her in places and sharpened her in others, but the sight of her still hit him the same way it always had. âhiâŠâ the word came out quieter than he intended as he stepped aside to let her in. his gaze followed her, taking in the small changes. she was olderâand just as beautiful as he remembered, if not more.

all dolled up, seraphina was in her boyfriend's bedroom -- awaiting for his arrival; deciding to want to surprise him for their first anniversary she snuck a copy of his house keys. an hour had passed and it was clear that her boyfriend forgotten about it, forgotten about her. a sinking feeling fills the pit of her stomach, jumping at the sound of the door opening -- hoping that it was her boyfriend, except she was met with her boyfriend's brother. "if you're looking for your brother, i don't think he'll be home anytime soon. . . sorry, i didn't realize you were home."
getting home from the gym, jaden hadnât expected to see seraphinaâs car parked in the driveway. he knew his brother wasnât homeâheâd gotten a text earlier saying he was out with a group of friends for the night. his black tank top clung to his skin as he stepped out of his car and headed inside. when she wasnât in the living room, he assumed she was upstairs in his brother caidenâs room and went up to tell her she was waiting around for nothing. the moment he opened the door, his gaze locked on her. she was dressed in a stunning outfit, clearly having taken her time with her hair and makeup. âheâs out with some buddies,â jaden said, leaning against the doorframe. âi thought he wouldâve told you.â his eyes lingered before he added, quietly curious, âwhy are you so dressed up?â

this wasnât how bexley had wanted things to unfold. but her best friend was getting married; she was a bridesmaid, and her ex-boyfriend happened to be a groomsman. which was how she ended up standing in a hotel room with a single bedâone she was apparently meant to share with milo. âyouâve got to be kidding me,â she muttered, the words slipping out as she rolled her suitcase inside. the room offered no mercyâno couch, just two stiff chairs, making any alternative arrangement impossible. theyâd ended badly. theyâd wanted different things, and the arguments had piled up until fighting was all they knew how to do together. somehow, their friends had no idea theyâd broken up. it was a conversation that had never happenedâand bexley wasnât the type to drag her mess into other peopleâs lives.

âdo you think we can actually pull this off?â chase asked, taking a slow sip from his beer as he glanced over at lilac. the two of them sat side by side at the bar they'd agreed to meet at, the low hum of conversation and the clinking of glasses filling the space around them. it had started as a ridiculous ideaâone thrown out almost as a jokeâbut the more they talked about it, the more it seemed like the only solution. fake dating. it was a crazy plan, but they both had something to gain from it. his relationship had ended a month ago, and if he was being honest, he still couldn't pinpoint the exact reason why. they'd argued, sure, but every couple did. looking back, the only thing that consistently seemed to bother his ex was lilac. she'd never liked how close the two of them were, insisting there was something more between them, no matter how many times chase told her she was imagining things. now, sitting across from lilac with a half-finished beer in his hand, he couldn't help but wonder if his ex had seen something he'd been too blind to notice himself. âso...â he rubbed the back of his neck before letting out a quiet laugh. âwe're really doing this?â there was a hint of amusement in his voice, but beneath it was genuine uncertainty. âbecause once people start believing we're together...â he paused, turning to meet her eyes. âthere's no backing out halfway through.â

âwhy can't you just back off?â the blonde practically shouted, her patience finally snapping as she glared at the man standing only a few feet away. her chest rose and fell with each frustrated breath, arms thrown out at her sides in disbelief before crossing tightly over her chest. it felt like he was everywhere. every time she turned around, he was there. if she went into a coffee shop, he followed. if she met up with friends, he lingered close enough to keep an eye on her. even something as simple as taking a walk or running errands had become impossible without feeling like she was being watched. she couldn't remember the last time she'd had a moment to herself. âi can't even breathe without you hovering over me,â she continued, her voice wavering between anger and exasperation. âdo you have any idea how suffocating this is?â she dragged a hand through her blonde hair before letting out a sharp, humorless laugh.
What, do you want me to believe that thatâs real? That youâre happy, that youâre in love?

the steam from the hot tub stung brinleyâs eyes, blurring everything except him. in that moment, she couldnât look away. she moved through the water and straddled his waist, fingers catching the chain at his neck and tugging him closer. her voice was low and decisive. âstop talking,â she murmured, breath brushing his lips. âand kiss me.â
When she stood up and began to tease the waistband of her shorts down, Jaxon was man enough to admit he thought she might actually do it. He lent forward and placed both elbows upon his knees then groaned without shame as she pulled them back up just short of showing him anything worth while. Damnit. Should have known better. He fell back into the couch cushion with a grunt of annoyance, but still there was a smile tugging at the edges of his lips. Yeah, he had wanted to see it - but good on her for teasing him. It made things more interesting than him simply getting what he wanted. Huh ... the realization that he did want her kind of hit him all at once and he decided to just roll with it rather than question it too deeply.
"Maybe I'd just wanna make an honest woman outta ya, ever think of that?" He had been the one to suggest a bet of course, but sue him for having a little fun before he answered for real. "After proving to you I can actually get you off and I'm not just some three pump chump? Well ... reward enough as that sounds, I think I'd like to keep doing it. Whenever it suited me, now that sounds like a good winning bet stake, don't you think?"
the moment he leaned forward after she'd tugged her shorts down ever so slightly, a satisfied smile spread across brinley's face. his reaction was exactly what she'd been hoping for. even the quiet groan that escaped him sent a flutter of butterflies through her stomach. he was affecting her in ways she'd never imagined, stirring feelings she'd never expected to have for him. she could've easily given him exactly what he wanted, but where was the fun in that? teasing him was far more entertaining, and she was enjoying every second of it. was she hoping this would turn into something more? maybe. she refused to dwell on it, though. overthinking had never done her any favors, and the last thing she wanted was to ruin whatever was unfolding between them.
âyou don't have to make an honest woman out of me, baby,â she teased. âi'm already brutally honest. haven't you noticed?â the pet name slipped out before she could stop it. for the briefest moment, she considered taking it back, but it was already out there. besides, it felt strangely natural, so she let it stand. her brows knitted together at his next words, though the look quickly melted into something more playful. she caught her bottom lip between her teeth for a second before meeting his gaze again. âand just how do you suppose we do that?â she asked, her head tilting slightly. âmy brother's your best friend, and i know damn well he'd kill you if he found out about... us having sex.â a faint grin tugged at the corners of her lips. âi'm not saying i'm against the idea,â she admitted. âi just happen to care what my brother thinks... at least a little.â
