CHARACTER HISTORY [TW: DEATH, DRUGS, INJURY ]
Born in Hidehill, Nashville Juliana wasn’t the kind of girl who’d dream small. Countless days in her youth were spent developing skills that she hoping would catapult her future and free her of the small town. Growing up Juliana spent a lot of nights alone, her mother working long shifts at the hospital and her father’s name being listed on a sheet of white paper as her mother was choosing a donor. Mariana Torres had no time for relationships, fully investing herself into her career but didn’t want to prevent herself from “experiencing everything life had to offer a woman” and decided she didn’t need a relationship to create a family within her household. This of course gave the woman her wish, but she never could of imagined just how busy she‘d become once she returned to work after Jules’ first year of life. The girl was left in the hands of her grandmother, Isobel, the years spent with her growing feelings of loneliness but also a love for cooking. There was one skill that was bigger than that, a topic she’d always beg her grandmother to select when it was time for their weekly movie night: dance, specifically ballet.
Her grandmother saw this love and brought her to local classes to finally give Jules a way to interact with other children her age before she started school. She started dancing at the age of 2, and finally once she reached high school she decided this was going to be her career. At 16 years old she was approached by a talent scout, they told her that if she kept this up she’d have a scholarship waiting for her come graduation. At 17 she was hit with the loss of her grandmother, someone who to the eye appeared to be in perfect health but always hid what she was feeling to be able to provide for everyone else and it caught up to her. Juliana felt like she’d lost the only parental figure she’d ever known, the person who taught her to fight for what she wanted and told her every day that she had the power to change everything around her if she was willing. The loss hit her hard, the girl began debating on if ballet was really something she wanted, but she had her grandmother’s voice in the back of her head telling her to keep pushing forward and she hasn’t really had a real conversation with her mother since.
Determination was in her blood and one this she didn’t want to repeat was starting a family too late or having to experience motherhood alone. She didn’t want to give her children the life that was thrown at her, a practically nonexistent father and a mother who meant well and never showed up because her career mattered more. No, Juliana knew a ballerinas career only lasted so long and once she obtained everything she wanted to do she’d be ready to find somewhere and someone to settle down with.
Senior year rolled around and Juliana never would of guessed she’d be roped into something so serious. The girl had her fair share of popularity but she got a kick out of not giving men like Lucas the time of day…but he wore her down. The pair didn’t seem like the most serious couple, touchy and affectionate to the public eye but nothing skimming below the surface until they were behind closed doors. Juliana felt comfortable to share her hopes, dreams, and everything in between.
College approached and Jules and Lucas were still going strong when she was approached by a ballet scout, they wanted her and were willing to give her anything they wanted to move her to New York. At first she declined, wanting to hold them off until she finished her studies but they returned, she’s to remind her this time that new ballerinas weren’t approached every day. She needed to break things off with Lucas and set her sights on her career if she actually wanted it to happen. Juliana arranged to finish her studies online, packing her packs and readying herself for the stage and lights that would illuminate her future.
Her sacrifice proved to be worth it when she landed her first lead role in Swan Lake, followed by Romeo and Juliet and Sleeping Beauty. Everything was perfect, she was unstoppable…until one night where she landed a jump and something felt off. Once the routine was over the pain stopped, causing her to take some over the counter medication to be safe and go about her day. As she continued to dance the pain came back, seeming to get worse the more she practiced her plié, but she couldn’t afford a day off if she was still able to stand on her feet. This continued for a few months, the pain and over the counter medication to make it through the season. By the end of one late night performance, Jules went back to get dressing room and couldn’t bring herself to get back on her feet. From her chair she called one of her friends for help and she was rushed into the emergency room where it was declered she needed an MRI to confirm she originally had what was a simple metatarsal stress fracture and her disregard caused a full blown fracture. 12 weeks of no dance in order to heal the damage was her consequence, taking her completely out of the running for upcoming auditions. She felt the world crumble around her, turning to the pills for pain for emotional support while she sat at home in new New York apartment.
Juliana was devastated when her doctor recommended she stop dancing full time, anything to prevent a future injury from ruining her ability to walk on her left foot forever. The brunette packed her bags and returned home to Hidehill, using some of the money she kept saved away to secure a house in Horwick. Now she’s back and trying to figure out life without her passion, but she hopes to soon find herself another one.
HEADCANONS
During practices she’d make sure to take her break just before sunset, loving how calm the colors made her feel as the sun dropped. That’s what made her buy a camera, though she was convinced she’d never get the chance to use it with how busy her schedule was.
After her injury she took a few photography classes, in awe with how capturing moments took her mind off of everything she lost. So when she moved back home and there was an opening at the Hidehill post for a photographer, that was the sign she needed to go for it.
She does still use pain pills to manage her emotions, she doesn’t think it’s a problem because she’s able to stop for months at a time afterwards.
