Now werewolves? They sounded a little bit more scary than she was used to, if she was going to be perfectly honest. It wasn’t like she was fucking invincible or anything. But Matt seemed like he knew what he was doing, so. There was no reason not to trust him.

“I believe you. And you… stay here. Like, all alone, and you managed to take care of yourself just fine?

     alone? he wasn’t entirely alone, although he wouldn’t admit that. no, he      lived alongside his brother-- the one who had turned him. but, he chose      to keep that a secret, to go along with the idea that he lived alone and that      he was still human.

And honestly, it was a relief that the old familiar friend was actually concerned for her, rather than throwing her out immediately. That was just something she would keep to herself for the time being, though. Because it seemed like he knew something that she didn’t and, well. She would like to stay alive.

”What? What kind of monsters lurk here? Hell hounds? Vampires?”

     did he want to tell sparrow about the monsters in his territory? no. did      he feel as though he had a choice? not at all. she deserved to know in      order to help protect herself further. still, his shoulders rolled back as      he thought of what exactly to say about the monsters that wandered      around.

“These are really good, are these on-brand?”

He hasn’t had anything but off brand beans in… forever. Also, excuse his lack of manners. He’s used to eating out of jars with his bar hands now.

     his chest rose and fell as a sigh escaped him. although, he knew he      couldn’t blame the other for the lack of manners. it was a rough world      so, survival came before manners.

And when he was walking away, that was her cue to follow him. Which she did, even though she stuck with falling behind just a tiny bit for a couple of moments before she finally caught up to him. Actually listening as to what he wanted her to do, which seemed entirely reasonable.

“I got it, I got it. I’ve made it this long, I think I can protect myself. Afraid that the creepy, spooky monsters will get to me?”

     he knew that she could take care of herself. that was the main reason she      was alive, but he wasn’t afraid to admit that he was scared of something--      or rather himself-- getting to her in the middle of the night. he had to be care-      ful with what he did, and even what he said. although, his voice seemed to      drop, close to that of a mumble.

There was a pause. Now he was really turning the tables here. And she wouldn’t be lying if she said it was more tempting. Shelter, maybe some decent food, company. She waited another second or two before she was letting out a sigh, along with nodding her head briefly.

“… fine. If you really think it’s for the best… then I guess one night really can’t be all that bad. Thanks.”

     it felt like the hard part was finally over. although, sparrow wasn’t gone and      out of harm’s way, there were precautions he could have her take to assure      he didn’t accidentally attack her. however, that involved her listening... for      now, he simply gestured for her to follow before turning on his heels to head      back to his home.

          ❝ of course. but you HAVE to listen to what i said, okay?              lock your doors tonight and it might be better if you had              the guest room window closed. ❞

Just when she stopped being so stubborn, that was when she was waving it all off. A lazy smile tugged at her lips as he continued. She really did pull through as of late when it came down to it, there was no doubt that she would be able to then.

“No, no. I get it. And I’m a big girl, Matt. It was nice seeing a familiar face, though.”

     now she was willing to leave? why was she suddenly so willing? maybe      because he finally bent and offered for her to stay. however, considering      he didn’t want her out and he doubted she would be able to get completely      out of the territory before nightfall, he didn’t want to risk anything.

         ❝ i know you are, but... look, come stay with me for one night             and lock the door. that way you don’t have to worry about me             bugging you at night and you can get a good night’s rest. i can             even get you food! ❞

It was only a half-lie. Because it was true, she could wind up dead like everyone else, but she made it this far on her own. She could survive a little longer. But she had to keep herself from breaking out into a grin when he was offering shelter. A safe place sounded tempting. Even with his cryptic warnings.

“… do you really? I mean, you were pretty adamant about wanting me to go away, like two seconds ago.”

     his hand moved to scratch at the back of his head, yet another sigh      escaping him. did he want to keep sparrow in the area? no. did he      have a choice in the matter when she could die? no. his arm dropped      back down to his side after a moment, his attention falling down while      his shoulders rose in a shrug.

          ❝ i know. i still want you to go away, but i can’t let you              die because i refused to shelter you for a night... ❞

Thank you. Because it’s a hassle that she just wanted to know what the fuck was going on. But whatever. She scoffed at that, glancing back at Matt and shrugging her shoulders.

“I might die tonight when I can’t find shelter, so. Don’t count on it.”

     guilt slowly crept into his mind, settling down with his concern. he couldn’t      let sparrow die because she couldn’t get to shelter, especially when he had      a place for her to stay the night. and the more he thought it over, the more      guilt consumed him. so, his eyes flickered over his shoulder momentarily      before pointing behind him.

           ❝ ...i have a place you can stay for the night. but, you need               to leave when morning comes... ❞

Her eyes narrowed in on him as she tried to get her hand out of his grip. Slipping her knife out of sight and glancing over to where she could probably make her getaway. Because this place was just way too “dangerous” anyways, when he was still here.

“Fine, fine. Let me go and I’ll get out of your hair. Not like it’s any better out there.”

     was she actually cooperating? he couldn’t tell, but it sounded like it. so,      he decided to go along with it and let go of her in order to give her free      range. she agreed to leave so, what hassle did he have to worry about?
