I forgot to post this earlier. Now you can download the new La Bella album. This is pretty high on my list of albums of the year so far. It’s an Interesting, concise, and memorable album, which are all three qualities I look for in this genre.

Check it out if you like: Pinegrove, lo-fi bedroom stuff, folksy stuff

Two really cool songs from Flower Hound, which I believe solely consists of Matt Terrigan of Brave Bird and Oliver Houston. I like this.

Sonder play soft grunge kind of stuff but with more hardcore influences. A bit like Title Fight. Some good tunes here if you’re into that.

Grey Matter / Nuclear Moms - Grey Matter x Nuclear Moms (2015)

Check it out if you like: post-hardcore, ska, hardcore, piano

Cool split between two cool bands. Grey Matter is like post-hardcore meets ska and horns and piano and stuff. Nuclear Moms plays more straightforward hardcore, but it’s still cool and a little weird, just less weird than Grey Matter.

Charles Rogers - Boundary Situations (2016)

Check it out if you like: Self Defense Family, Pixies, Drive Like Jehu, Farewell Continental

Interesting post-hardcore/post-whatever out of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Noisy and catchy at the same time. interesting lyrics, interesting vocals, interesting instrumentation. One of the best EPs of the year so far. Another winner from Fawning Records.

A Month of Somedays - Live @ The Empty Bottle 03/03/03 (2015)

What a cool musical surprise to end my 2015. A Month of Somedays is the best emo band of all time and if you even dare to disagree then really that’s okay but I implore you to reconsider. On the last day of the year, the band shared this live set on their Facebook page. There are seven tracks total: the entirety of This Current State, “Angelina,” and TWO SONGS I HAD NEVER HEARD BEFORE (including an eponymous track). They are both awesome and I wish there were studio versions of them, but according to the band, they were never properly recorded. Anyway, I ripped them from Soundcloud and now I’m finally getting around to sharing them with you. Hopefully someone reading this appreciates getting to hear this as much as I do.

Troubled Minds - Something Worth Saving (2016)

Check it out if you like: catchy emo and pop punk, Free Throw, Sorority Noise

Debut LP from Troubled Minds. Catchy, has some cool horn parts, and has a really nice opening track. They rerecorded the two songs from their demo, and it was actually nice hearing them rerecorded.

Legs Like Tree Trunks - Happenstance (2016)

Check it out if you like: Pile, chillin but not chillin too hard, saw someone else compare it to Pavement

I wasn’t expecting this, but I’m glad to see it. Legs Like Tree Trunks is back with their first release since 2012. They used to be a sort of twinkly math rock sort of emo type band, but this new EP, to me, sounds a lot like Pile. Specifically, the kind of sound Pile has going on in songs like “Special Snowflakes.” But cleaner. I like the new direction the band took with this release.

Knola - The Black Beach (2015)

Check it out if you like: Dikembe, The Promise Ring, the Midwest Pen Pals family tree of bands

Apparently this is free to download now, so that’s cool. Knola is another new band with members of William Bonney/Merchant Ships/The Exploration/Etc. and Xerxes. It’s still sort of emo but a little more mature or refined sounding compared to some of those previous bands I mentioned (I just saw that Skeletal Lightning said almost the exact same thing in their writeup of the LP, but whatever). Like, emo for the mid-twenties crowd rather than teenagers and 20 year olds.

Respire - Demonstration (2014)

Check it out if you like: post-rock, screamo, metal, and trumpets

I haven’t actually listened to this more than once or twice, but I found it on my list of things I might want to post on here, and I’m trying to clear that off. This is kind of crazy. It’s like post-rockish emo instrumentals with screaming and growling, and trumpet and glockenspiel, and sometimes it gets heavy, and sometimes it’s nice sounding, and and and.

Sounds Like Violence - The Pistol (2004)

Check it out if you like: early 2000s emo stuff like The Jazz June and The White Octave, Deep Elm bands, angst

Here’s a cool band from the Deep Elm back catalog that I managed to overlook until recently. Very emotional, very Swedish, very early 2000s sound. Check out their song “Sammy” on the Unreleased No. 5 compilation. That’s how I got into the band.

Prince Daddy & The Hyena - Adult Summers (2015)

Check it out if you like: Posture & The Grizzly, Rozwell Kid, Glocca Morra, Yeah, No

Cool, sloppy, pop punky/emo type songs. Songs about being 20-ish and drinking and stuff like that, which has been done before obviously, but this EP manages to stand out and is definitely worth a download.

Floor Baba - Gamewave (2015)

Check it out if you like: video game music, vaporwave, trap beats

“Blending club music by way of jazz fusion, soundscapes that could be from an N64, lush chords, lazy grooves, deep bass, and catchy synth melodies, ex-game composer FLOOR BABA's debut solo album GAMEWAVE is a walk around the tropical groves of the internet.”

That sums it up better than I could. I’ve been on a video game music kick recently so this was a cool find.

I Love Your Lifestyle - I Was a Loser in School (2015)

Check it out if you like: Algernon Cadwallader, poppy emo, singing along to stuff

New I Love Your Lifestyle EP that came out early this year. I didn’t get around to listening to it until recently, but it doesn’t disappoint. Still extremely catchy. I believe they have a full length coming out in 2016, so keep an eye out for that.
