Something I really love about Nifftyβs song Clean it Up in S2 is how she does actually give a much more honest view of what the hotel is than Charlie, who while in the midst of her spiral becomes obsessed with the image of herself and the hotel. Charlie wants to present the image of herself and the the hotel (and the process of redemption) as something that is squeaky clean, but the reality is that the hotel is a messy place filled with messy people, Charlie herself included, and it will take a lot to βclean it upβ
"There's an endless stream of trash and filth and hundreds of bugs
If you love the stench of jizz, wait 'til you smell our rugs
'Cause people barf and piss and cum on them a ton
And when they do, I get to go and clean it up (what?)
Hypodermic needles left all over the place
And our rats have grown immune to being sprayed by mace
So I gotta take my knife and stab 'em all in the face
And now they treat me like their queen because I'm covered in rat blood (Niffty, no!)
Magical land, hotel of my dreams
Disgustingest, ugliest building that I've ever seen
And I get to clean it up!"
...which is something Charlie struggles to fully realise in the need to embrace and understand the complicated messiness of sinners, herself, and the process of redemption. It's not clean or neat or tidy. If it was, you wouldn't need to "clean it up"! and despite how much Niffty puts into cleaning the hotel, the dirt and grunge still comes up again and again, it's just part of life, part of people, having to deal with and work on those flaws and less desirable parts of yourself you want to look away from. They'll never go away anymore than the barf and piss that Niffty has to continuously clean off of the rugs. Just like how working on yourself is a constant process, it's not linear or a simple checklist, it's something you have to commit to everyday, the same way you do with, say, cleaning your house. Or in this case, a hotel.
Niffty in the Japanese section also sings about the heart of the Hazbin Hotel and Charlie both, and how the dreams they represent are worth fighting for and will come true one day:
βThe hotel is really nice
Charlie is a very kind boss
I believe she will succeed
And it being sung in Japanese with Charlie saying βcan anyone understand this?!β is so funny and fitting to me. Because yeah, at this point in her character arc the true meaning of the song Niffty is singing about the hotel and what itβs really about would be something Charlie canβt hear or understand, since sheβs temporarily lost sight of herself and her dream in becoming so consumed by her own pride and proving others wrong. So much so that anyone conveying it would seem to sound like they were speaking another language! (there's almost a point I feel could be made about Charlie's foiling with Vox and his ties to the Tower of Babel here)
also sidebar that's kind of unrelated to this mini analysis, but I love that out of all the chibi cast watching and cheering for Niffty, Husk is the most starry eyed and in awe of her. It's so cute. That's his friend! (I also think the sentiment expressed by Niffty in her song is similar/comparable to his song Loser Baby about embracing your flaws/acknowledging your "mess". Niffty just has the addition of actually dealing with/cleaning it up day in and day out, and still holding onto one's hopes and dreams.)
