Last year, I befriended a Catholic seminarian. We've gotten to be pretty decent friends. Seeing as he was staying in town for the summer and I wasn't, I entrusted him with caring for my plant.

He did a wonderful job, but as he was returning my plant to my custody, he explained "I watered her every other day, I gave her new dirt, moved her into the sunshine, prayed the rosary-"

"What?"

He looked at me, confused. "Isn't she a plant you pray with?"

"No," I said slowly. "She's a prayer plant. That's the... colloquial name of the plant."

Upon seeing his stricken face, I realized something went wrong. Turns out, this entire time, he's been including my plant in on his prayers and leaving her near icons.

Listen, totally cool. My plant becoming Catholic is a great deal for her not dying over the summer. But now I must navigate this interfaith household. Keep me in your thoughts.

I should also add- I ran into my rabbi and explained the situation. I then asked, earnestly, if there was a remedy. A mikveh of sorts, or a beit din, or something.

He turned to me, sighed, and said in a very deadpan tone-- "Plants don't have covenants, Joy,"

So Theodora's a free agent according to rabbinic opinion. I guess I'll permit her to be Roman Catholic.

Not really a question as much as a thank you for your books and work around death. I've been a 'death obsessed' kid and am now also a deeply interested in rituals' adult who's experiencing some intense grieving and your work has been a tremendous help getting me through this loss.

One time a very famous interviewer asked me, "Why do you write so much about death?" And I was like, uh.

The question surprised me so I was just like, "It seems important?" But what I should have said is that we will die and everyone we love will die and our species will die and our Sun will die and et cetera literally ad infinitum.

So yes, I write about that. It feels worthy of consideration.

What's important here is that the world is talking about Malvinas again. The British government only whines because they're scared. The entire world has become hyper aware of one more bit of British dark history, one of Britain's remaining, violently claimed colonies, a military base in a strategic location in South America, near Antarctica.

It's ultimately idiotic to whine over how many yellow cards were awarded in a match or *squints eyes* whether straight Bellingham was targeted because of homophobia I guess??? When this is the picture that went around the world. This was the cover of multiple journals, it was plastered all over social media just yesterday. This scares Milei, scares the British government, scares FIFA, and it scares all fascists. I don't think we're appreciating it enough.

This visibilizes a cause we've been seeking justice over for the last 44 years while the world undermined it. This is one step towards making everyone aware of the dark bits of history that everyone is ignorant to. It's not just Malvinas. It's the U.S. backed military dictatorship that sent all our hungry teenagers to fight trained soldiers to their inevitable deaths or lifelong trauma. It's the mourning that surrounds us every day. It's what makes us relentless and hungry for the fight. Both on and off the pitch.

I don't think we appreciate enough just how revolutionary the consequences of this will be.

This is what happens when famous people use a massive, international platform to speak out against injustice in the world.

FIFA, England, Trump, Javier Milei: the world is watching. And what they've seen cannot be unseen. And what they've read cannot be unread. And this picture will live in the history books and the minds of football fans for ages.

Submitter comment: I'd like to submit this '[s]tudy of defensive behavior of a venomous snake as a new approach to understand snakebite' not for it's topic (worth studying!) but for it's insane methodology, which... well, I'll just let the researcher speak for himself:

[Q: Why did you decide to do this experiment?

A: Snake behavior has been generally neglected as a field of research, especially in Brazil. And most studies don’t examine what factors make them want to bite. If you study malaria, you can research the parasite that causes the disease—but if you don’t study the mosquito that carries it, you will never solve the problem. Up until now, the popular wisdom was that the jararaca would only attack if you touched it or stepped on it. But that was not what we found.

Q: Why did you need to be the victim?

A: The best way to do this research is to put snakes and a human together. In this case, the human was me. We put the snakes inside a ring on the floor of our lab until they got used to it, then I stepped in wearing special protective boots. I stepped close to the snake and also lightly on top of it. I didn’t put my whole weight on my foot, so I did not hurt the snakes. I tested 116 animals and stepped 30 times on every animal, totaling 40,480 steps.]

Michael Newton’s Monsters, Mysteries and Man was a bit of a mystery for me for many years. I remembered it from my local library (it was at the Main, which I didn’t go to as much as the closer, smaller Branch). I had gotten it out before a trip to my grandparents' house and I distinctly remember reading it in bed there in almost one sitting. I remembered that it had a garish monster head on the cover and that the title reminded me of Richard Cavendish’s Man, Myth and Magic series, but that was all I could remember. Searching, for years, on the internet, turned up zilch.

And then, sometimes, I find that magic combination of words on the right site and boom, there it is, the thing I was looking for all those years. The site in question was Archive.org, so hey, you can read it too. The dust jacket is magnificent, isn’t it?

The text was a bit less noteworthy all these years later. It’s a general survey of crytpids — Yeti, Sasquatch, surviving dinosaurs, sea and lake monsters, Kraken, Nessie, UFOs — and the efforts to find and study them. Two more chapters cover vampires and werewolves, but they are half-hearted because there’s no meaningful chance that they are real. And that’s what Newton wants. He’s the opposite of skeptical Daniel Cohen; the whole book is arranged around finding the small holes of doubt in the skeptic’s argument and filling them to brimming with the hope of the believer. Considering not much has changed on any of these fronts in my lifetime, I don’t expect they ever will. Sorry Mike.

Still, that cover art is an all-timer.
