Dino Doodle: Sauropod
Dino Doodle: Sauropod! These colorful fellas are loosely inspired by brachiosaurs, but all the long necked dinosaurs are super cool, and there were SO MANY more than we thought!! I love that we're still learning things about dinosaurs and making new discoveries, but I also love leaning into the cute and cozy designs of nostalgic times. I wonder if these little guys need a name - what would you call them? 💙🦕

Luigi's Mansion 2 Ghost Doodle Page
I was watching one of my fave YouTubers play through the remake of Luigi's Mansion 2 & I was reminded of how much I love the ghostie designs, they're so fun! Not a fan of when they get their pupils back sooo they're staying "corrupted" but they look cuter that way imo. Especially Polterpup, who is in fact best boy 🥰👻

I'm finally learning how to draw and it's really cool to see my progression. But I feel like I'm missing out somehow by not having a recurring OC. I just like drawing lil squishy guys and Pokemon haha.
How do you make an OC??
Saw this while skimming the oc tag, I personally start with color pallets, and then personality, and then what they look like.
Like I’ll start with ‘oh I want a character that uses the orange and purples of a sunset’ then I’ll think about what kinds of things that pallet makes me think of ex ‘landscapes, wind in clouds’ then from that I’ll know I’ll want some kind of whimsical and calm personality. From that I’ll think ‘oh I bet something long and flowy would look nice. Maybe they should be a girl?’
And by that point I have the bare bones and can start collecting inspiration images and songs if I needed to.
Something that helps me come back to an oc over and over again is giving them a flaw that I either have experience in myself or an experience I’ve dealt with from others. For this example oc maybe I’ll use the theme of wide open spaces and make her nervous, a hermit. Make her a little pretentious about her shyness.
Maybe she can have trouble making friends. And at that point where I have a cathartic grip on her character then is when I start to design her face and hair and skin and height ect ect.
Sorry for the long post reply but I thought I’d try and put my thoughts into words.

I personally usually start with a concept, then from there start messing around with designs that capture that concept. Once I have a sketch design I like, I start swatching color palettes till I find one I like. (This is much easier with digital art because you can color the same sketch a bunch of ways.) The personality can be part of the original concept or can evolve from the design. But the colors are usually the last thing to be decided for me.
For example, I have a recurring character I like to draw named Zill.
I started with the concept of “Robot who has a screen for a face that shows cute emotes to display emotion.” I drew a few designs and ended up liking a early-mid 2000s cartoon-network style design, with a hoodie, jeans, and big red converse-esque shoes, and a big old-school style pc for a head. From that design, I realized that I liked the idea of him being the equivalent of a 10-12 year old and being very bright and friendly, so I made his default expression a big smile and the design on the front of his hoodie became a cartoon yellow smiley face. It wasn’t till this point that I ended up locking down the final color palette.
Obviously it all comes down to what process clicks for you in the end though! Go make some art friend!
