How Not To Write Komaeda

- Don’t make him a sexual predator. He’s not one, nor would he ever be one. At no point in canon did he sexually harass or creep on anyone. In fact, he canonically opposes sexual harassment, and never did anything remotely sexual in the whole game.

- Don’t write him just as a joke character, unless it’s a joke/crack fic. Some people seem to treat Komaeda as a one-dimensional joke character whose only trait is obsessing over hope and/or Hinata, or as - sigh - the ‘Fingers in his Ass’ guy. Memes and jokes are fine, but if it’s a serious fic, write his character with the same accuracy and respect as any other character.

- Don’t base his entire character off or Chapter 4/5. I’ve read fics where Komaeda is consistently written as a condescending prick who looks down on everyone else and thinks he’s superior. I have no clue where they got this from, other than the later chapters of SDR2, because this is the complete opposite of how he is normally. He wouldn’t act like this towards the Ultimates without a reason.

- Don’t write him as an abuser. He isn’t one. In canon, he never says or does anything ‘abusive’ to anyone unless he feels that they’ve done something to deserve it. And no, he wouldn’t and doesn’t abuse Hinata. Saying that he would because of Chapter 4 is an exaggeration, and saying that he would because of his mental instability is just ableist.

- Don’t write him just as an edgy senseless killer. He isn’t one. His character has layers, intelligence, and depth. He wouldn’t just go out and start killing random people just because he’s So Edgy or because he feels like it. He isn’t pure evil, and he always has clear self-defined reasons for everything he does.

Since Komaeda has a mental illness, they think he must be yandere, and write that trope instead of him. Weak writers who are unable to understand the motives of others rely on stereotypes like that.

Komaeda is actually acutely aware of abusive behavior, not only in others (*cough*Teruteru*cough*) but also in himself. Do people think he hates himself that much because he’s a masochist and gets off on it? Of course not. He hates himself because he thinks he brings suffering onto others. Ever since he was a child, people told him he was bad luck and that he brought nothing but misery to others. He believes his very existence is abusive, and that’s why he keeps his distance from everyone. That’s why he pushes Hinata away at the end of his FTE. That’s why he repeatedly tries to kill himself for the sake of others.

The only reason Komaeda hadn’t killed himself sooner is because he refused to die a meaningless death. He feels like he’s hurt so many people, and he doesn’t want to figuratively spit in their faces by dying without bringing at least a little bit of good to the world.

If anyone is getting abused, it’s Komaeda. He abuses himself, he’s abused by others, and even his very luck cycle abuses him.

So those who portray Komaeda as some yandere can fuck right off.

me internally: do you realize what this child has been through he literally saw his parents die in front of him and blames himself partially for it because of his luck like can you imagine what that does to a person no one in his entire life has ever been friends with him and the ones that did probably had something terrible happen to them bc of his luck, bc of this he has an intense self loathing complex that is only increased by his society’s focus on talent that he doesn’t believe he has, he wants to be useful and viewed as important in the world so bad when he sees a chance to become what he believes in shsl hope after death by eliminating the remnants of despair (which a lot of other people agree with in this world buddy) and himself he does it almost without hesitation, the only reason he hesitates at all is bc he’s attached to who he believes is his first real friend that he loved who also rarely thinks of him at all after his death and u have the audacity to call this child trash even as a joke he deserves better

I just really loved this. Look how she psychs herself up. The little movement she does with her arm to shake off the nerves. How she prepares herself for the run by bouncing lightly off the ground. The little okay. The sharp breath through the nose and the way her whole body clenches even more in anticipation. All this in one second of animation.
