We just got back from the vet. It’s kind of bad news.

We thought the biggest thing would be “oh he’s too fat, we’ll need to put him on a diet!” While he is one fat little jerk, all 15lbs of him, that’s not the primary concern.

Peetie has an autoimmune disease that is causing his body to reject his back teeth. His gums are like, the same color as my avatar, bright red. He needs surgery. All his molars (13 in total) need to be removed. He’s in terrible pain, so says the vet, although it doesn’t affect his eating.

The surgery will cost around $1,200

Since the surgery is around my birthday, I’ll have to give up some things I had planned to celebrate. It’s no big deal. I love this little shit with all my heart. I’d do anything for him.

A fandom friend told me that my successful fanfics intimidated her, to the point where she didn't feel comfortable participating in fandom anymore (because she has writer's block and gets discouraged easily in comparison). I just want to write and share stories. I NEVER want to intimidate anyone or cause such insecurity. I feel like updating after her confession would be like rubbing salt in her wound, but how long should I stop posting fic out of respect for her feelings? I just feel guilty now

This might just be me being insensitive, but I don’t really think it was fair of your friend to lay her decision to step away from fandom on your doorstep. If she feels intimidated by your writing there are so many other, more productive, things that she could do. For example, reach out and see if you’d be willing to help her by betaing for her fics.

Her decision to stop participating in fandom is just that. Her decision. By blaming it on you, she’s just making you not want to participate either, and that’s not cool.

Post your fic. Don’t let her guilt you into not doing so.

If I might add a little something that I myself struggle to remember: it’s not a contest.

Am I occasionally envious of other more popular stories that seem better written then mine? Yes. Do I sometimes feel that my peers have better ideas and characters than I do? Yes. But at the end of the day my stories are mine and I can’t really compare myself to others because we’re not the same person, we don’t have the same backgrounds, or experiences, or the same style. Really none of us can compare our writing to each other’s because we are all different people, something that becomes very evident if you ever collab someone.

So what do we have in common then? We love the fandom enough to write for it, to write about it, to explore all those little things that canon never does, and so, so much more.

If your friend is losing heart it might be a good time to remind them: it’s not a contest.

It’s okay to hate a character. What isn’t okay is to:

> force everybody else to hate said character

> humiliate and degrade someone who loves/likes the character you hate

> pushing how problematic said character is to a person who loves/likes them or just really neutral about them

I was listening to Hozier’s From Eden, and when I heard the line “ A rope in hand for your other man to hang from a tree” I thought of the following:

Consider this:

Eve ate the apple, knowing full well what was going to happen. Eve ate the apple to get away from Adam. Eve ate the apple with Lilith’s encouragement.

Not because Lilith was deceiving her. Not because she was working in league with the Serpent, but because she and Eve understood one another. It was Adam’s first wife who taught Eve how to satiate her own lust after her divine-appointed partner failed her once again. Who else would know better how much of a disappointment he was? How he sought only his own pleasure and in the most monotonous ways.

In that, Lilith empowered her replacement, a woman that had been created to spite her, to rival her. She gave her an intimate gift, one considered too shameful and avaricious for the Tree of Knowledge to disseminate: self-knowledge.

As if Eve was the first alchemist, she transformed self-knowledge to Power. Played the hapless embodiment of both Lover and Maiden archetypes flawlessly and accepted the fruit most willingly; rejoicing internally, since both she and Lilith knew they had already partaken in consuming that which was really forbidden.

Eve and Adam were promptly cast from the garden, the latter feeling nothing but pity for himself and acrimony for his partner. Eve however, exulted, for she had deceived not only Adam, but had convinced Satan that the apple had been his plan. Her last victory was against her Creator, as she stole away in the night, never to be seen again. Her independence forced a laughably ’omniscient’ god to remove yet another of Adam’s ribs, to play resentfully with his clay and forge yet another to grow his collection of playthings.
