āāYou donāt love him.ā he challenges, a small smirk appearing on his thin lips. āExcuse me?ā āYou canāt.ā āHe makes me happy,ā I retort. I cross my arms and stare defiantly up at him. āSure.ā He shrugs. āI didnāt say he didnāt. But you donāt love him. He doesnāt get under your skin the way I did.ā āThatās a good thing.ā āYou keep lying to yourself. You say he makes you happy, but itās not the happiness that I made you feel. Itās not the tingle in your fingers and the butterflies in your stomach. You like him cuz heās safe. He wonāt hurt you. Heās smart and funny and kind, but heās oh so safe.ā āSafe is a good thing.ā I nod at him firmly. āNot for you. I can see it in your eyes. You want recklessness. You want fiery passion. You want danger. In fact, I think you need it. You thrive on it.ā He steps closer, breath warm on my face. One hand slips gingerly around the small of my back and the other rests on my cheek. My breath catches in my throat. He leans down, lips just brushing my ear. My skin prickles with goosebumps, and a smile sneaks itās way onto my face. āSee? I told you.āā

Do you think the universe fights for souls to be together? Some things are too strange and strong to be coincidences.

āThe saddest truth is realising you have fallen madly in love with what can never be.ā
I have a terrible habit of leaving things unsaid for the sake of peace

āHe was cruel and you loved him. But okay, okay, he wasnāt always cruel. Sometimes he was nice, and he was gentle and sweet and everything you ever wanted in a boy. Sometimes he bought you flowers and called you beautiful and he kissed your fingertipsā ā to make up for the times he pulled your hair and called you a mess and made you cry ā sometimes he apologised with tears in his eyes and you believed him. Sometimes you chose to believe him. The first time he took you to meet his friends he said, āisnāt she a jewel?ā And you felt your heart swell with pride and you wanted to kiss him right there and then like a smitten schoolgirl. So, later, when he called you an embarrassment, you felt your heart drop and your cheeks grow red and you thought you must have done something wrong. So afterwards when he wouldnāt talk to you and you began apologising for nothing it really got to your head. The problem was that he was cruel and he justified it by blaming his cruelty on you. āThis is what you made me do,ā he said, and the first few times you almost apologised for it. And he almost had you, didnāt he? A few more months and it would have ruined you. āSo what made you leave in the end?ā a friend asked the other day. You swallowed and said, āI imagined how I would feel if any man treated my daughter that way,ā you started, āand I almost started to cry.āā

Can you hate someone for what they have done, but still love them for whom they had been?

Everybody talks about cutting ppl off but nobody really talks about the grief that comes with having to stand firm on that decision knowing itās not what you wanted but what was necessary for your well-being.
literally grief.

Forgive your old self, you've changed.
I kept asking myself āwhy does he get to be happy with other people and I canāt beā but then thatās when I realized I didnāt need another person to be happy. I had myself, my success and thats all I have ever needed
