know what I hate? how uni’s have all of these “de-stress events” and preaching about mental health around exams but don’t actual want to fucking do anything about the shitty system of education they’ve created that literally makes kids have anxiety attacks and suicidal thoughts. yes education should be challenging, but it should not compromise your wellbeing for it. it’s like saying “yeah we realize the system is horrible, but here have free hot chocolate, it’ll make everything better”. the education system is flawed and broken and they know it, but they could care less.

good news: got my period & went to the gym today. then ate really good mac and cheese for dinner.

not-as-good news: i’m just so tired. had another minor panic today because of (yet another) last minute “oh hey you need to do these things or you can’t defend your exams” kind of deal and it was just the cheery on top of my already present exhaustion. i managed to grade like 5 more papers and also to compensate for feeling behind and inadequate finished a blog post to get a teeny bit of funding from a teeny tiny award i received. but my god. this quarter is so, so exhausting in terms of ups and downs. it’s just been one thing after another and i just want a solid, stagnant nothing for winter break. JUST NOTHING. JUST GENERAL PLEASANTNESS AND NOTHING. sigh

will probably stay up tonight watchin’ whatever and sleep in because all i have to do tomorrow is meet a friend, proctor an exam, and grade, so. i am very over everything. i just want to cuddle my boyfriend and eat cookies and have a glass of wine and fall asleep for 10 hours.

Why does the field of academia place such unreasonable and unhealthy work standards on graduate students?

One of the department secretaries did the usual “blehhhhh Monday” spiel to me on our elevator ride this morning, then was like “well, you guys are probably here all weekend and don’t even know what day it is!”

When I first got to this school, one of the senior faculty told all the incoming chemistry grad students that “there’s no such thing as a 40-hour work week in grad school”. Then went on to imply 60-80 hours would be the norm.

Grad students are overworked and underpaid. Why is this treated as normal and expected? It’s unreasonable and toxic.

getting a root canal is trash but getting a temporary crown put on is PURE UTTER TRASH. here’s looking at all you other bad teeth people who told me that the actual root canal is the worst part and is totally fine, etc. etc. my mouth is killing me, i’m so grumpy. && don’t even get me started on the exorbitant costs of fucking healthcare..

but on the brighter side, it’s the most wonderful time of the year on youtube because i have so many vlogs to watch every day i’m DROWNING IN VLOGS. should squeeze a paper out of this shit and call it field work but after exams i have no brains left

also on the brighter side my advisor sent me a secret email to attend the important faculty meeting tomorrow and hold people accountable for changes in our program and i think i’m on her good side again <3

maybe this is just my own laziness talking but i start writing my general exams in two days and i just don’t think it’s helpful for me to study/read/pre-write anymore :|

i’m hoping not studying sunday night and all of monday won’t bite me in the ass later but realllyyy i’ve been reading for almost 6 mo now how much are two days really gonna help me

but wow i’m getting progressively terrified and had nightmares all last night that i couldn’t answer the questions they asked and i can’t stop stress eating and speaking of, i’m going to make my bf go get korean food tonight to calm my nerves /dies
