I know I’ve asked this before but it was so long ago that I think it couldn’t hurt to ask again!

Are there any specific pieces of media (can be books, tv shows, movies, etc) that feature the gods that you would be interested in me reviewing and talking about??

I’m working on a few right now (yes Tea With the Gods is making a come back!) and making a list for what to possibly review in the future. So id love your input!

In my dreams, Dionysus has a crooked jaw. He has horns that are uneven, and the tip of one horn seems broken off. He has scars on his chest, and his nails are most like claws. He is gorgeous, as always, and wonderfully kind. He speaks to me as an equal. He treats me like a person. And in his vibrant green eyes, I see a reflection of my own soul looking back at me. I could get lost within the forests those eyes contain, and staring too deeply, while tempting, could release some hidden part of me - something beastial and untamed.

The inscription has been painstakingly examined and translated by classicist and epigrapher Dr Roger Tomlin. It reads:

‘ab urbe v[e]n[i] munus tibi gratum adf(e)ro acul[eat]um ut habe[a]s memor[ia]m nostra(m) rogo si fortuna dar[e]t quo possem largius ut longa via ceu sacculus est (v)acuus’

‘I have come from the City. I bring you a welcome gift with a sharp point that you may remember me. I ask, if fortune allowed, that I might be able (to give) as generously as the way is long (and) as my purse is empty.’ In other words: the stylus is a gift to remind the recipient of its sender; the sender acknowledges that it is a cheap gift and wishes that they could have given more. Its tongue-in-cheek sentiment is reminiscent of the kinds of novelty souvenirs we still give today. It is the Roman equivalent of ‘I went to Rome and all I got you was this pen’, providing a touching personal insight into the humour of someone who lived nearly 2000 years ago.

Anthesteria 010.

There are many uncertainties regarding the Anthesteria that makes it a bit difficult to reconstruct the festival. In my comic I will adjust things to suit my story rather than trying to be as correct as possible. For one thing, it’s probably one month too late for the Anthesteria, since the festival took place at the end of winter/beginning of spring, but in my comic spring seems to have fully arrived already.

The first day of the festival was called Pithoigia, “jar-opening”, when people tasted their new wine. One account says that the Athenians used to bring samples of their new wine to the shrine of Dionysos in the Marshes and there mix it with water. The first mixed wine was offered to the god and while pouring the libation they prayed that the wine would be harmless and beneficial to them. I’ve borrowed parts from the Homeric Hymn 26 to Dionysos and the Orphic Hymn 50 to Lysios Lenaios to the priestess’ prayer.
